Where did that Basenji go?

Basenji Talk
  • Blaze is famous at our vet's… he went in for surgery and while recovering, he ate his cone, the harness off of himself, the vet wrap on his leg, the three leashes and one vet assistant's coat hanging on his kennel, and his bedding. They removed everything.
He ate his neighbour's bedding, vet wrap, and was working on his cone when they caught him. This was through chainlink fence.
They weren't even surprised when I had to bring him in for eating an umbrella last year.

LOL, that's amazing! They don't call him Blaze for nothing!:D He ate an umbrella?? So he swallow pieces of it and you had to get him into the vet for it? This guy is a machine!

  • One of my early basenjis had to have an op at the vets. It was the vet's practice to tie dogs recovering from surgery to the leg of a table in the recovery room. Guess what! The vet returned to find Bernie up and about and wandering round the room. He had eaten through the table leg. No leashes for him!!

  • Dan i bet you were just glad Buddy felt well enough to chew his lead into 3 pieces ;)

    You got that right!;)

  • Yup, three metal spines and the majority of the fabric. He also has a fish allergy, and of course the fabric was coated in a fish oil to repel water… his reaction to fish is known as "3-foot-rocket-butt". During his recovery, I was torn between relief, sympathy, anger, and disgust. The worst part... he was 14 when he did that! Thankfully he's slowed down since then...
I do it for the snuggles. As long as he's not shooting anything out of his rear, he's welcome on my bed for snuggles.:D

OMG, he was 14 when he did all that damage at the vet?! What did he do when was young?!

  • These posts are some of the reasons I love Basenjis - they are always able to surprise even the veterinarians!!

Impressive. You have to love how determined Basenjis can be when they need to get something done, even if it doesn't make sense. :D

  • @nobarkus:

Lupin will actually take this leash back and replace it for free. :p

Lupine leashes are the best. Anne - I hope they never come up with a "void if chewed by a basenji" clause. We would be in big trouble.

My parents had the pups one time and Kona chewed through Keoki's leash and my mom said I thought they had a warranty that they couldn't be chewed!! I had to explain that they weren't chew-proof, just that they can be replaced if chewed.

  • The offending umbrella was obviously too close to his kennel… Even though it's been there for four years...
He ate a lot of strange stuff over the years.... $17,000 worth of venetian blinds in my parent's hot tub room was the most expensive. The scariest was the AAA battery from the TV remote...
Today he destroyed three granola bars while we were gone. Not really impressive until one realizes that we haven't had granola bars in this house for a few months. He stashes things to eat and destroy!

OMG A triple AAA battery?! How did the battery get removed? $17,000 worth of blinds!! Did their insurance cover it?
My Mother left my first Basenji, Nipper in the house asleep on Halloween night 1975 when she was 10 months old. When I got home at midnight I could not get the door open. The dog ripped back the carpet. I finally pushed the door open with all my strength and upon inspection found the living room and dining room curtains shredded and pulled down. Mom was not a happy camper. She got new curtains, I fixed the carpet and all was OK.:D

  • My foster had surgery for intestinal surgery-50% removed due to carpet fibers slicing and had to stay for 3-4 days at the hospital. She was trying to get to the leashes hanging by her crate. I told the surgeon that if she had to have surgery again, the clinic would be financially responsible for it. I had forewarned them about Bs being chewers.

    You've gotta love these dogs… :D

The dog had eaten carpet on a continual basis?

  • Wow, I thought Otis was bad at stealing and chewing on things..but he only goes for human edible items..like a package of bacon(with packaging), a stick of butter w/ partial wrapper, some raw potatoes and turnips, a whole cluster of bananas, 7 in all, everything gone except the piece where they are attached together….several granola bars, with most of the wrappers, our fruit bowl is up on the counter and between him and Moses the giraff, they eat whatever is in it..oranges, pineapple..you name it.

He also loves his lupine collars, we have replaced it once..he chews on his leash if you don't keep up with him on the walks or if I stop to talk to a neighbor...

jepp, it is intense being owned by a basenji..but boy do I love it.

Buddy will not eat any type of fruit period. He won't even taste it. I'm sure he'd go for that bacon and butter though. :D

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

She-Ra goes to the door, then looks over her shoulder at us. Problem is, sometimes she's playing a game with us, where she just wants to see if we'll get up and open the door. We're putting a stop to that by putting her out forcibly if she starts to walk away so she knows if we get up to open the door she's going out. Period.
