New update: Tika is no longer in heat! Yay! Remy got neutered and is doing great! We got a dog trainer to come in assess the situation and she thinks it is starting to improve compared to how I described it when I booked her to come. Only Maia seems to need the muzzle, she seems to be very unsure of the puppy. We are working with her to build her confidence. The puppy doesn’t seem to have any stress with Maia around and won’t start anything. The muzzle is on just in case when I am home alone as I don’t want anything bad to happen when if I can’t separate them. The puppy is getting lots of training time to help her learn how to behave properly. With 2 people here we can have the girls on short leashes and they are fine together. They did have a small altercation of snarling but no biting and no one got hurt. The older female backed down and walked away. As much as I want her to be the top dog it seems that the puppy has a much more dominant personality. If they figure out the pack hierchy hopefully everything will settle down. The trainer says there are no pack instincts in domesticated dogs, but after having 6 basenjis I can’t agree with that in regards to basenjis. We can walk the girls together without muzzles now so I think things are more positive and they seem to be improving every day. When Remy is healed from his neuter I will get the puppy spayed and hope that calms things down even further. So far there is a lot more peace in the house. Please anyone let me know if there is anything else I should be doing to keep these girls on track. Thank you for all your advice and guidance! I am so grateful for this forum as what is normal for other dogs is not so much with these guys!

I read some where that "the love we feel for our Basenji's is different to the love we feel for a human. It is better!"
I have been married twice, been in love with a human once (not either of two wifes :rolleyes: don't ask) and loved one Basenji. If I was to choose which love I prefer now I would choose…...... a Basenji"s love every time. Does that make me a little strange and need therapy
or is this a common feeling among people who belong to Basenji"s? -
I know what you mean. You usually have to earn a basenjis love, it isn't given 'unconditionally' like a Lab's love, so it really feels special. In terms of appreciating beauty, I love the look of a basenji far more than a mere human form.

My niece asked me why dogs die before we do.
I told her that if they didn't, we would never deal with humans, just love our dogs.

I just recently told my husband as we were both in bed loving on our B, Sahara. I said, "It is crazy to love a dog as much as we love Sahara, we need to curtail it some"! So, have we curtailed, Heck, NO! We just love her to pieces, she is so special and loving, we can't help it. hehe!!!!!

B's worm their way into your heart, little by little. They PROVE they are reliable and trustworthy. They may cause havoc in you're life, but mostly they own up, and seem proud of their accomplishments. Gotta love that!!!

BTW, we often disagree, in my house, on which dog loves us the most!!

Back when we got Topper, we had recently lost 3 within a few months from our "old pack". Topper was a darling 1 1/2, funny and loving, but I told DH I wasn't going to get attached to this one, he was just going to be "a dog". Yeah, right. Topper is my "Heart dog", adored above all others…just a dog indeed.
Keep adoring Sahara, you can't stop even if you want to!

Oh heck yeah, it's ALL about the Basenji for me at our house! I am completely and utterly in love with my "second child." Bella has started "worming" her way into the DH's heart lately. It won't be long before she has him completely wrapped around her little paw. My son; however, is proving to be more of a "cat" person… go figure!

Our daughter gets jealous of our dogs (she's 15!). She still thinks the world revolves around her and does not understand that a dogs needs must be attended to, no matter what ! They depend on us to care for them.
Basenji love is much better than, say….... a Chimp.

Maybe my son is jealous too… and I love chimps, but my son told me there was something on the news about one attacking someone. She had to have plastic surgery, must have been bad. My son already hates monkeys, that story just reconfirmed his fears...:eek:

I saw a Discovery Channel special on Chimps and they said out of all the animals in Africa, Park Rangers feared adult male Chimps the most.

That isn't to say that you can't have great, strong, loving relationships with them...but wow, they can do so MUCH damage so quickly when they are angry. And sadly, when they attack they often go for the groin, and the face...makes sense if you want to seriously damage your opponent.
We have an old (but true) joke in the zoo world. If you go to a primate conference, and shake someone's hand, if they are missing a finger (or more) they are probably a chimp keeper
