• We have taken in a foster dog… long story. Basically, the person we got him from has no idea what he is or how old he is.
He's FULL of energy & needs some obedience training. He knows sit, and we're working on come. He's very smart, and very very very sweet & loving. He's never been to a dog park, and we've taken him 3 times this week already. He LOVES it. He gets along with all dogs from very tiny to very large, and all humans. Everytime I lose sight of him for a minute, I find him sitting at some stranger's feet, looking up adoringly into their face while they scratch his ears. At home, every second he is out of his crate, he is wrestling with Lola. He's probably 3-4 times her size, and they play so well together. He's gentle enough that I hardly ever hear a yelp, and they have so much fun. He sleeps in his crate at night, and after I crate him, Lola will wait several minutes to come to bed. I think she's trying to figure out why her playmate won't play with her. He's also causing her to bark, a lot.
His face screams Saint Bernard (although MUCH smaller) to us, and a woman at the park says he reminds her of a setter because of his silky white hair, light brown spots, and fringe on his tail. When he stops & sees things, sometimes he points.
We THINK he's around a year old, and his paws are still pretty large. I'm guessing he weighs a good 50 pounds, and he's at a very healthy looking weight. I'm going to swing by the vet today & weigh him. I tried to get some pictures of him, but all I could get were pictures of him drinking water. I'll try to get some better ones at the park today.

  • Maybe some kind of heeler mix.

  • Looks like a springer cross to me. Maybe part Britney Spaniel? Definitely the coloration of one. But seems a bit large for that.

  • Epagneul Breton, my sister used to breed them. Good hunting dawgs…

    Esther

Here in the US that is the Brittany Spaniel. Sure has a lot of the look, so my first thought was a Brittany mix also.

  • Looks like a lot of brittany spaniel in him (ex friends had 2) and the head looks like a dead ringer and with the spots on him, that's what I'd say.

  • before i saw the other answers, i too thought brittneyX Does he show any pointing/setting tendancies?

  • I was thinking Pointer/Setter cross…could be Pointer/Brittany. The shape of the head/muzzle looks very Pointerish...but the body shape and feathering looks more like a Setter.

  • Shear size makes me think otherwise. He said that the mix is 3-4 times the size of his B. Shouldn't Brittanys be close to same size just heavier? To be that much bigger, makes me think it's got to be larger breeds.

I should have been more clear, because that's misleading. Lola is only 16.5 pounds today, so she is on the tiny side. I took Coda to the vet today & he weighed 49 pounds.
An animal control officer was there to pick up a stray. When I told her & the receptionist I had no idea what he is & asked for input, the first thing they both said was "Saint Bernard, but only in the face." His bone structure is much more delicate than a Saint Bernard, and its ONLY the face that looks like Saint Bernard.
I hadn't thought Brittany Spaniel. He does have that look, but based on his size, I think its unlikely.
I was looking at setters online, and he looks to me like a red & white Irish setter. Yesterday he spotted a bird at the park, and he pointed a bit. He doesn't have as much feathering as pure bred setters, but his fur is white & silky & long. And its hard to see in the pictures, but his entire body is covered with very very light brown spots.
He has the most gentle temperament of any dog I've ever met.

  • If you're still leaning towards a saint bernard, but it doesn't fit, try other swiss dogs, like a greater swiss mountain dog., but they're short coated.

With that many spots, I still think some sort of heeler mix.

  • check out the Llewellin setter (a strain of Eng setter) on this page:

  • Britney and Lab. or English setter and lab. The lab would make the face a bit broader giving it more of the St. look - ticking and structure looks more like setter to me but - who knows - could be 3 things or 4 … Irish R&W is a remote possibility more because they are first not as big as you think and 2nd as a reletively rare breed - they pretty much know where all of them are.

I'm sure however he loves having a home of their own. Kudo's to you!

  • He's cute, I thought Springer Spaniel mix too when I first saw the picture but I can see where you could see how he looks like a Saint Bernard in his face.

  • Whatever mix he is, he is lovely.

  • I looked up every suggestion so far in this thread, and my conclusion is: he could be anything!!! Haha. If I had an extra $300 laying around, I'd do a DNA test to satisfy my curiosity! I guess until then, he's just Coda!

By the way, he's looking for a new home. If anybody knows anybody who is looking for a dog, he's great & I highly recommend him to any home that isn't a small apartment with two resident basenjis!

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the dog. He looks just like one to me.

  • Here is a photo album on Another Chance for English Setters (ACES) are national English Setter rescue group.

Coda looks not too different from some of these dogs. It might be worth contacting them to see if they can help you place him.

  • The MARS Company has a DNA test called the WISDOM Panel. It does 5 generations, 120 breeds. If you really want to know. My guess would be Brittany X Dalmatian.

If I had the money, I definitely would have done that just to satisfy my curiosity! Good news though…. whatever he is, he has a home! He went to Andrew's sister, which I know is a great home for any dog! He will be an only child so he will be well cared for & spoiled! Yay!
