Recommendation for dog coat?

    Well, we escaped Los Angeles and are now camped out in Portland … and it's FREEZING here!! (50 degrees and rainy) Poor Ziggy is shivering like mad when I take him outside.

    Any recommendations for an online dog supply company that sells dog coats? And I mean really warm coats!

    for really warm coats i HIGHLY recommend Fido Fleece, they have a full chest covering. Sit Stay has them for great prices but a more limited selection.. The Fido Fleece web site has more choices (but unlike sitstay the price changes with the size). I know most people back off because they are $30 each, but IT WAS the best $30 I spent (I actually ordered another one from sitstay after I got the first) because Tiggy loved it so much, they are very durable, easy on/off machine washable with your everyday clothes and don't shrink

    Montana Dogwear has been highly recommended by others, we don't use them down here. http://www.montanadogware.com/
    They have a tail notch for the basenji and I have heard they fit well.

    My girl does not like coats she has to put her legs into so she has a coat from www.carealotpets.com. She has the faux suede sherling coat which keeps her warm in idaho winters and is also waterproof. Karen

    Zip has a waterproof Montana Dog Ware coat. Xmas present, whoohoo. I'm sort of happy with it. The fleece is a thick fleece. It's a little on the big side, the XXXS. But that means there's room to put on a sweater underneath if need be. It's also a little big length wise so when it's been on her a little while it winds up folding over at her tail just slightly and I have to sort of readjust it on her body to get it to sit flat. I also think it rubs her shoulders some and it has caused a small dime-size bald spot on one side. I only saw that happen when she was wearing the coat alot. It grew back in quickly.
    I recommend asking what the "coordinating print fleece" around the neck is when/if you order one because well, Zip's other mom calls her drag queen dog when she has the coat on. It's red and black leopard print. Yeeeeeah. I wouldn't have chosen that myself. Despite the print, the turtleneck is nice because you can bring the fleece up closer to their ears if it's real cold and there's an opening for the leash. I haven't put it thru the wash yet so I don't know how well it would hold up. I think the waterproof exterior is nice to have, especially since your final destination up there is Seattle, right? The coat was also pretty pricey (which is why it was an xmas gift!). Zip should be set for a loooooooong time coat wise.

    I am so glad that You, your husband and Cricket are OK. You're lucky the bull mastiff did not attack your husband, Im surprised he did not, actually. I have had this happen to me so many times to our dogs. Thankfully it always ends up bad for the other dog/dogs. They go into fight mode right away, which does not make them great at meeting other dogs, but after this happening so many times, I don't trust the other dogs either. If I just have one dog with me, I scoop him up in my arms and that has worked well so far.

    If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

    Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs

    Sahara does the same, she will stick her head through just enough to see you and then helps you get dry by licking. She loves to help out, and will take a bath pretty easy now. Daddy also took her with him to shower and she did good. We have also taken her in our boat with a lifepreserver of course and she liked it ok. Hubby put her in the river with him and she was fine with him. Yea, they do have the sweetest personalities, and we love our Sahara sooooooo much.

    Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.
