What's That Magic Word

Basenji Talk

  • "who is that?" spoken like a surprised person would…
That is the clue to patrol the backyard

  • Biscuit
    or
    Dinnertime
    or
    Walkie?
    or
    Who's the Puppy?

  • Wanna go to the PARK?????
This gets everyone dancing by the door.

    Anne in Tampa

  • Mailman! or Let's go walkies!

  • Oh, I forgot…Querk's special word is "Rosa" ...his first and best girlfriend. They haven't spent a lot of time together in over eight years...but all you have to do is whisper her name, and he runs all over the house looking for her :)

  • Sahara has several that make her Bonkers: Let's Go Bye-Bye, Squirrel, Pepper (my cat), Daddy's home, Blake (my son), Treat.:D

  • WannaEeeeaaaat? (You have to really emphasize the Eat part) - This get both dog and cats running to the kitchen.

    Walkies also has that effect.

  • Ours is not really a word, but sounds… Scarlett goes nuts any time she hears walmart bags and the tags on her collar, that means its time for outside!!! We live in an apartment and the bag is for pickup, it really drives her nuts when i get back from shopping and put stuff away cause all she hears is those bags.

  • Kitty Cats! (will run to the window and look for any cats wandering around outside)

Go See (used to use this to tell Lexi to "go see" any new dogs that came into our area at the park…she'd go greet everyone at the opening to the field)

    Outside

    Load Up

Where's the light? (whispered) (Lexi will go NUTS staring at the ground waiting for the laser pointer to show up)

Are you CRAZY?! (this will activate play mode)

Did you hear something? I thought I heard something. (will alert them to check out the premises)

The kids also are very aware of the tags on their collars and know it's time to go OUTSIDE when that happens...this also applies when we're putting on our shoes or putting keys in our pockets. They are very smart little dogs. I love them!

  • Ours will drop everything when they hear the word "TREAT??!!!!!" ,,,,,,,,they also will do that when they hear the dishwasher opened,,,,,,,,,,,can you tell ours are a tad bit food motivated,,,,,;)

  • Also for mine… "go for a ride?" works too... ggg

  • Chance also loves it when I say "where's Lucy"
Lucy is his girlfriend who lives down the street from my parents house. When I visit he wants to run to see her. She is a basenji lab mix. :)

  • The other dogs name

Call one dog the other always comes first

  • If my wife says the word "Puppies" with the right tone in her voice, they know they are going to get something good.

Also, the are addicted to Greenies (which unfortunately they can chew in 30 seconds with the new softer composition), so if she says "Greenie Time" or even askes "What Time is IT?" they will immediately run over tot eh place we keep the greenies.

Also, if we ask "Who's Here?" they will run all around looking for the visitor.

  • We have a few of the "usual" words – esp. "cookie" -- but what really gets both B's going -- or should I say coming running from even a different room --
is if they hear Gypsy's jaw snap, as in "she just got food, what's in it for us".

Amazing the distance from which they can hear Gypsy get a bite of anything. LOL

I'm afraid If I do decide to get another I won't have a chance to introduce them beforehand as it Will probably be a puppy I bring from the US.. I doubt there will be a problem since she will be a young puppy…

If you find that you have excessive collars/leashes, you may want to call your local shelter and see if they would like to have them. So many shelters run on such a shoestring budget, it might be something they'd be able to use but not afford…. Just a thought

This is the main problem right now, I suppose. The civil war's in the Republik of Kongo. I have been talking to a owner of Avongara Basenjis, who's daughter has been in Afrika with the last big expedition. And she had the same thoughts than I have: we thought, that if there are some Basenjis left (the ones which have not landed in the cooking pans), they are spread all over the forrest regions. Most of the human inhabitants of this region have left their houses for the next bigger city to find a little security and help there…. it is absolutely horrible, what mus go on there. But similar actions in other parts of Africa (Mali and Burkina Faso are always at the border of war like actions) plus in lots of these areas there are now many refugees from other areas which make the problems not easier for the habitants....http://www.azawakh.com/azawakhfriends/english/index.html Regards, Esther

There's no animal so resourceful as a hungry basenji. They were slighted you know for centuries being last in line at the cooking pot.
