The breeder sent her home with me when she was 7 weeks old. She's 8 weeks and 3 days old today.
I've spent every waking moment working with her since I got her. I live in Maine, and its been below freezing here, so I have her trained to voluntarily eliminate in a pee pad lined pen. She has barely ever cried in her crate, she has already developed an extraordinarily soft bite (she still gets me occasionally with her puppy canines though) and she will occasionally play up to 8 or 9 rounds of fetch with me when she's in the mood. I'm not teaching her verbal commands yet, but she's following a lure extremely well, and has an incredible front sit. I'm very proud of her.
I watch a lot of Zak George, but I'm no professional trainer. I barely taught her any of this. Its all Rogue. All I do is feed her, play tug, give her treats when she does good, and stroke and groom her for many hours a day while she has her naps.
Rogue's sire is ELDORADO N AKUABA LUCKY CHARMER, and her dam is MATA HAURI QUICK STEP. The dam, all 4 grand parents, and all 8 great grand parents are show champions. The sire did not compete due to covid.
Rogue is my ESA animal. I want to try to train her in a way where we can work together someday. My father is going to start a security company here in maine when it becomes safe to do so, and the breeder told me that the breed doesn't understand bite work, so that leaves detection and tracking as possible occupations. I'd also like to try hunting rabbits with her some day as a catch dog. Are those reasonable expectations for a show dog? I've also considered dog shows and breeding. Shows are not really my scene, but I wouldn't mind giving it a try. Can she be a hunter, a tracker, a detector, /and/ a show dog? Does anyone have any ideas of what else this promising puppy could achieve?
Another gorgeous pup!!!! You guys are killin' me! This years crop is awesome! I really like the time you're spending with her and the bond you're forming. IMO... perfect.
As far as showing and breeding... I'll let others address those. This early... my only advice is bond, bond, bond.
What a cutie, however I have to say, 7wks is really early to send a pup home? My are not sent home till at least 8wks. They really need the interaction with littermates and Mom till at least 8 to 12 wks. People that have had Basenjis or other Basenjis/dogs in the home are usually OK at 8wks as they teach pups the "ropes"...

Basenjis are great detection/scent pups... hunting rabbits, she will do that herself, it is in their DNA to chase/catch and Kill... they are hunting dogs... And would agree that "bite" is really not in their DNA... For showing, not really... you would need to work with your breeder if you are interested in showing
@tanza The breeder has been doing this for over a half century, so felt like it was ok. Can you think of anything I can do to mitigate any negative consequences?

The breeder told me that if I wanted to show rogue, she would be a good dog for it. Is that what you mean? I don't know much about dog shows.
@roguecoyote - Everyone has different ideas, most breeders do not wean or place pups at that age... but it is what it is. IMO over the years in the breed, pups do better staying with their Mom and littermates in the home till at least 8 to 10wks and for me 10wks... just keep this in mind that they might have missed some socialization that would have happened if kept a while longer. So you need to understand that there could be issues that you need to work through with your pup. Sounds like you are doing all really well.
@roguecoyote - if interested in showing you need to find a mentor that shows and work with them. Doesn't sound like your breeder does show? So you need to work with someone that does if you are interested. You can go to akc.org and read about showing to give you some insight. And also other venues to work with your pup. Not sure where you are located, but another can evaluate your pup and advise if they think she is show quality. If not, that is fine, enjoy your pup and train her for other venues.

She certainly is a pampered princess. My mom is a vegan animal rights activist, and I live with her. She won't even let me keep rogue on a house line. It's presented some unique training challenges, but ultimately I feel like we're still getting off to a great start.

Thank you! I only picked her because she insisted on climbing all over me when I was sitting on the floor at the breeders. Her stripes are a bit overcooked on her left side though. I'm hoping that they'll grow in more as she gets bigger. Its funny because on one side, her body is really stripey, and on the other side her face is really stripey. Its ok if it doesn't grow in though. I love her just how she is.
Aren't lure coursing and agility part of dog shows?
I keep watching you tube videos about dog shows, but they seem to be really focused on breed conformation. I feel like I'm not getting the big picture. I thought dog sports were part of dog shows.

Yes and no. All three endeavors will provide a unique opportunity to bond with your pup.
There is the typical dog show (like the big Westminster Kennel Dog Show that they air every year). The judges examine the dogs to see which one conforms most to the "breed standard", so it's like the swimsuit part of the Miss America pageant.
The Lure Coursing events are speed based. A huge field is set up so that a "rabbit" runs back and forth and the dogs chase the "rabbit". The "rabbit" is more like a white rag. The judges are looking to see which dog stays focused, on the hunt, and has the speed. Lure Coursing would be a good workout, but mostly for the dog. You could set up a practice area in your own yard, but... I think attaching a handkerchief to a little drone and creating a challenge with it flying relatively low to the ground might be just the ticket. It would take some practice and flying skill. You certainly don't want your dog catching the drone!
Agility events are the ones where the dogs run through the tubes, over the seesaw, etc. etc. That is going to require focus, ability, speed and accuracy. This one, I think, may be the one that requires the most work as I believe that the judges also grade on the owner/handlers ability to communicate with the dog. And you might find that agility may be the best way to exhaust your dog. As the saying goes, "A tired dog is a good dog." Expect it to be a good workout for yourself as well!
There are several other events that are available to enjoy with your pup. Talk to your breeder, many of these things shouldn't be attempted until the dog has physically matured (1+ years).
She’s beyond adorable! We can’t wait to get our little guy next month! He’ll be 12 weeks. I would have liked to get him at 10 but we’re wintering in Arizona. Have fun no matter what with your cutie pie!

You are going to have SO much laughter and fun and love with your beautiful little Rogue. My black and white Binti is the light of my life-she is 10 now but she is still my "puppy" and she still acts like one.
