Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My Basenji has displayed the following:
    Sneezing uncontrollably
    Rubbing nose
Drainage from nose, pus and blood
    Fever
    Loss of energy
Antibiotics for 5 days with no change, still feverish
    Unsteady and off balance
Constipated/ or lack of voluntary muscle movement to have a bm, vomiting

Vet stated that he didnt see any infection and he believes there is an underlying problem.

Fyi: I read about foxtails -symptoms and treatment. I have this plant in my backyard. I took pictures of her nose and it doesn't look good but why would the doctor not see this?

  • Have you told the vet about the foxtails? Can you see another vet who may have a better idea of what the problem is? I hope you find the answer soon!

  • Go see another Vet!

  • @2baroos Excellent advice! Small Animal Vets rarely inform themselves about these ancient breeds. I had ONE Vet who knew immediately what the Breed of my girl was.

  • @lucy1140 Most small animal Vets do not inform themselves about the Ancient Breeds. Please look for another Vet. I think the BCOA would be a good place to start searching for a Vet that knows what the Basenji is and things like Fanconi, etc. I had my girl for 16 years and only ONE Vet knew immediately what her Breed was. She had never seen one but knew by the ears and Curly Tail that she was a Basenji. My Dog was always great for the Vets but she blew dander like snowflakes so I knew she was stressed.

    Good luck!

  • Another vet is sound advice, not all are equal. Did you do blood tests? If so, did it show anything abnormal? Not sure you can have fever without infection or a virus? Both should show on blood tests? For sure it doesn’t sound like you want to wait for things to get worse.

  • I met a basenji who had very similar symptoms and he had a carrot that went up through his soft pallet into his sinus cavity. It took them forever to find it as it didn’t show up in an X-ray. You may want to look into a specialist for dog sinuses. It could be anything and very likely a foxtail. The infection for the other dog didn’t stop until the carrot was removed. Then he was fine!

  • Please check the symptoms for aspergillosis, a fungal infection. My basenji boy developed one after he inhaled a foxtail. The foxtails can travel internally, and the only way to know if there's one there is to do a full scope. They'll also be able to spot a fungal infection that way as well.

  • Good vets are hard to come by - you want one who will learn (from you and your dog). I have spent years making sure all the vets at the Practice I use know all about Basenjis. Over time, I have come to trust four of the five. . .

So get a new Vet, see if you can find one with a little knowledge and even more good sense and tell him about the foxtails - but not immediately. See if he can come up with a solution and if not, THEN you make the suggestion 'could it be. . . ?'

Hopefully the new person will be a better diagnostician.

    Poor wee doggie

  • I have never had a vet not know what breed my dogs are, even though when I got my first one they did not have any others in the practice. My vet immediately began reading up. And when I gave her info, she listened.

Foxtails can be very nasty and a vet that lives in an area with them should know you have to REMOVE IT before your dog will get better. So I join the others in begging you to get another vet.

@nick4 Sounds like an allergy or something biting him. For sure the vets and see what they say. Benadryl for sure, as far as I know it does no harm if you dose correctly.

I would not have posted if I beleived it to be a scam. For folks who do worry about such things - one can always let the person know they would be more than willing to donate directly to the vet clinic for care of their pet. M.C. I too beleive they either got what they needed to help their little girl or they realized they put too much info on craigslist. I am hoping for the former. As for Drew - yes - that is a picture of him. If you really want to know - email me privately and I can send you a copy of an article I was asked to write for an Aussie pubication re: him.

It does sound like this person's dog is actually eating the bedding, towels, etc. because he/she is worried about the dog getting a blockage. Something that is safe to eat would be better than paper, I think, but I've given Paco Busy Bones and Kongs with treats inside, just to find when I get home that he's totally ignored them. I'll get home, open the crate, and he'll pick up the Bone or Kong and start working on it outside of the crate. I think it's his protest to being left home alone and not getting to come along more than a protest to the crate, as he never minds going in there. To the OP, I wouldn't worry too much about your dog not having bedding - Paco shoves his bedding to one side of the crate and sleeps on the plastic bottom all the time. I don't think they mind too much, as long as they're not in there for long. Have you tried video-ing your dog after you leave, or sneaking back to the house and spying on him? I video'd Paco once and found that he pawed at the corners and sides of the crate for six minutes, then curled up and slept until I came home 4 hours later.

@khanis: I have NEVER heard of these legendary fleas or mosquitos…. and I am a Portland native... and have NEVER had a flea issue with my basenjis [Whippet, IG, RR, Newfs, or cats]. Our home ranges from 3-6 basenjis on average and still no problem, even with dogs that come/go for showing or boarding. The only time I have treated them [my dogs] was prior to traveling to the midwest or east coasts. During the time I lived in Portland, which is at the very northern end of the Valley and has more wind than the lower Valley, I noticed a lot fewer fleas and 'skeeters. I can understand why you haven't experienced them. Try camping on the shores of Fern Ridge sometime. Make sure you take lots of DEET. I grew up there and, man, the 'skeeters are horrible! I can remember our dogs and cats had a rough time of it, too. We were always picking fleas off them. But that's the difference between living in the city and living in the back woods. The conditions in the lower Valley are perfect for the growth of fleas and mosquitos: standing water everywhere and very few hard freezes. (Gramma lives in the "sticks" too and has lots of both in her area outside Salem.) But, again, back to the subject, she used Brewer's Yeast and had pretty good results with it.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)

@JazzysMom: Oh sorry, should have been more clear. I just sent my dogs' blood to Bryan, HE sent it on for testing. I was just replying as to where/how to physically mail the blood, not so much as related to the testing itself. Me too, should have been more clear, I was really responding to etzbseder about the CPP site and submitting blood, didn't even look to see the message was from you…. ggg
