What do you think about this name??

  • I just bought a basenji yesterday, she's 13 weeks old. I was planning on buying a male and naming him Dexter. Since I got a girl I was gunna name her Dexy. When I got her, I couldn't help but notice she looks exactly like a little bandit. Not only that, but as soon as we brought her home, she acted like one too. Sneaking around the house and causing mischief. I want to name her bandit so bad because it's perfect for her, but I feel like bandit is too masculine. What do you think, I will upload pictures as soon as I get home.

  • congrats on the new puppy
if you wanted to feminize the name, i'd suggest Bandida. but really, naming her is totally up to you

  • Nothing wrong with Bandit!… Of course we say, be careful what you name them.... as they will live up to it.... congrats on your new puppy, who did you get your puppy from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis' pedigrees....

  • I got from spring willow, Laurie Owen is her name. She's really nice, shows her dogs, and health certifies all of them. I drove 8 hours to ohio to get the dog!

  • I've met Laurie, she has very nice dogs.

I think Bandit would be adorable, even for a girl!!! Now and days almost any name is a unisex name. Go for it!!!

  • You think so? I really want to upload some pictures but I'm in school haha. I put her in a crate for the night and she cried and screamed all night I felt so bad.

  • Be careful to name your dog after just one trait - it's what resonates every time you say or think it.
How about 'Bandi'? It feels a bit sweeter than Bandit.

  • I think you should name the dog whatever you want, I also don't think it's masculine- I think it's quite unisex.

  • Bandit is a common dog name (so is Dexter) so I don't know how much that will factor in your decision making. I work at a vet so I hear all the common dog names (no more Bellas!! MY GOD!) and have tried to be a bit more creative. I did own dogs named Bailey and Cody so I can't say I've ALWAYS been creative.. but I try! I know some people try to fit their registered name to their call name but my B's have been from letter themed litters so I didn't go that route.

I agree that you should name your dog what ever YOU want to name her! Bandi is really a cute idea.. unique but not odd. My parents tried to talk me out of Elliot (my mother wanted something common and really boring..) but he's my dog so it was my decision!

  • I think I am going to name her bandit. I'd like to hear other creative names that you heard. Some dog names are really interesting!

  • Congrats on your new pup!

Another option would be to name her after a famous bandit. Same concept, but a softer approach, and there are lots to choose from. I'm sure you'll make a good choice. She's your dog and you can call her whatever suits her… and you.

  • Hope she had a good first day while you were at school. It usually takes at least a month for them to get used to being left alone in a crate, and pups can't be left in a crate more than a few hours at that age, little bladders.

  • Yea my dad comes home after a couple of hours after I leave and he lets him out of the crate and plays with him. Then when he leaves my sister wakes up and plays with him. Then 2 hours after she leaves I come home from schools, so she's not in the crate for too long. Only at night, she stays in the crate for 5-6 hours at night. Btw, do u guys recommended putting her litter box in the crate. She's already potty trained and knows that she has to go in the box. The crate we have is way to big and I don't wanna give her too much space.

  • I have a female named Bandit! Her AKC name is Bandit, outlaw of the West!

She totally lives up to her name. She's a ragamuffin, through & through! Nothing girly about her at all!!!

Yes, they will. Kaia's registered name is Meisterhaus Twice the Trouble…guess who's the troublemaker at my house? Sometimes I even think it should have been Triple the Trouble 😉

Naming can be difficult, especially when you prepare for a boy and come home with a girl! I think Bandit is cute for a girl, but it's really whichever name you feel suits her best. If in a few days, you find something else you like, it won't be difficult to change it.

NO…. she should stay in the crate and YOU should take her out after a few hours to the potty box.... and usually I would wake mine up at different hours when sleeping and put them outside (California) or in the potty box...

  • Congrats on getting your pup and I like Bandit for a girl or boy.
Naming a puppy is hard, lucky it's your choice and you don't have to please the rest of a family.

    Jolanda and Kaiser

  • right, from the beginning my mom told me that the name is MY decision and whatever i name it will be fine. And I am the first person to see it in the morning after it slept. I wake up an hour earlier before school so i have time to play it. minor sacrifice for all the happiness she brings me. I'm not sure why people say the Basenji breed is not intelligent. The second day after an 8 hour trip into a new brand new environment, i already taught her how to sit. I think they are very smart dogs.

  • Just wanted to let you know, i have decided to name her Dexy. Although i like Bandit more, i called her Bandit for today, and i felt it was too difficult to pronounce. I know it sounds stupid but i feel like a dogs name should be flow out the mouth a little easier. Although i think my registered name is going to be 4-eyed Bandit because it has spots above its eyes that look like glasses haha. Here are the pics i promised.
