@basenjicurious
It’s great that you’re doing your homework on the basenji. I think the reason you read all these “horror stories” is because they are not your typical dog. They are a beautiful and highly intelligent breed with a very strong prey drive. My Kembe is my first basenji but I was familiar with the breed because my brothers were basenji owners. I got her when she was 1years old - she was returned to the breeder by the previous owners. Kembe has never been destructive, she has free reign of our house, and I can leave her at home alone. It’s extremely important to exercise them regularly - especially exercise and stimulate their minds, and establish a routine (I can set my watch to my dog). They are definitely trainable - it scares me to see how smart she is and also well behaved. Basenjis are extremely lovable and hilariously funny. If I have a treat that my dog especially likes - she will do her whole “repertoire of tricks” without me even asking her. She dances to let me know it’s time to eat and will sit right next to me and hit me with her paw when she wants to go for her walk.
I think our basenji chose us - when we went to the breeders home to look at her - She jumped up next to my husband on the couch and curled up! I was sold on her! I really hope you find a basenji that right for you!

1. If I like it, it’s mine.
2. If it’s in my mouth, it’s mine.
3. If I had it a little while ago, it’s mine.
4. If I can take it from you, it’s mine.
5. If it’s mine, it must never be yours.
6. If it just looks like mine, it’s mine.
7. If I saw it first, it’s mine.:D
8. If you are playing with something else and put it down, it’s mine. :p
9. If I am chewing something up, all of the pieces are mine.
10. If it used to be yours, get over it. :p
11. If it’s broken, it’s yours. :p -
Especially #2 - if it's in my mouth, it's mine!
12. If you really like it, it's mine.
13. If it's expensive, it's mine.
14. If I've got it and you can't catch me (as if, slowpoke!), it's mine.
15. Get it through your teeny brain, everything is mine! -
I kind of like #9-All the pieces are mine. They are too with Abby, you get nothing and its all hers.
-
16. And by the way your mine!!!

Has everybody seen 'Finding Nemo'? When we saw the seagull scene "Mine, mine, mine"…we were like "BASENJIS!"
-
I like #6 and #12…how true
-
Then there's When Mom goes in the other room, the book is mine.
-
Ha Ha I was going to say that-MINE MINE MINE all MINE!

Since I am fairly new to basenjis, I found your property laws hysterical!
Lillie always seems to find items that she thinks are hers early in the morning when I am getting ready to go to work. At 6:40 AM when I am just about to leave my house, she steals everything from me! I can't leave anything around. Whatever she can get to, whatever is in her reach - she thinks it belongs to her. I am thinking of putting up a shelf (really high) just so I can put my pocketbook and other items that I need to take with me. Any ideas or suggestions? Can I do anything to "work with" this behavior or is it just a basenji thing? I appreciate any suggestions.

Welcome to the world of Basenji's! As I said in another thread-NOTHING is one the floor, hanging over, within reach or within possible reach-like using other obstacles to obtain desired property. Sugar used to climb on the crate to go over the gate. Learned my lesson real quick!
Suggestions-shelves are good, closets are good, hide everything, make sure nothing is sticking out partway, and baby gates and locks-I love them!

My daughters room is heaven for zoe all those stuff toys. I keep hearing my 8 yr old daughter yelling no zoe thats mine. 8 yr old versus basenji? Who do you think will win? lol
-
my Daughter and I thought this was sooo funny. She is 8 yrs old and wanted to add another to the list
If you lose it and I find it, it's mine
-
Either up-and-away or inside-and-away. Remember these beasties can jump if they have a mind to.
Addition to the basenji property rules: if you're using something it's mine, so LET GO.

Dear Jodie:
No. Everything will probably always be the Basenji's. The term "leave it" works for when you are looking. When your back is turned, it's hers/his again. Including #16 above.

High shelves and hooks on the wall (to hold your purse and other things you need)are part of living with a basenji. Even in the bathroom, few people can keep TP on the roller, most on high shelves there as well !

- 1…Sigh. And why is it that everything belongs to her when I'm desperately trying to catch a 10 minute nap, or late to leave the house?
-
and dont forget
17. If you leave the bathroom door open the t-paper is all mine. -
Ya - I'm relatively new to basenjis too, but I'd learned real quick that the only things we can leave lay are the toys. My 2 coffee tables have scratches all over them & since we've brought our boy home, I've found a hole in my curtain, holes in my couch pillow, teething marks on my dining room chairs…I never knew how good my girl actually was until our little fella decided to show her up...
