Sorry, but I believe that dogs' health should come first. I understand the dilemma that it puts shelters and rescue agencies in, but in general I believe if you can't handle having intact dogs don't get them. Full stop. The more research that is done the more clear it is that we hurt dogs by neutering them. Yes it is annoying to keep a bitch safe once or twice a year when it is in heat, but if you aren't willing to do that why would you get it? Nor should his health suffer because you chose to get a bitch and seem unsure of your ability to keep them separated. I really wish people asked this question before adding an intact dog to their family. The next question is whether you are willing to keep them apart and want help with ideas on how to make it as peceful as possible. Having lived with a male dog that howled the entire time we had a bitch in heat, I can only say that it isn't Fun but it is doable. You can do this!

the problem boils down to this... what will you do if one leg refuses to let your pet continue? What will happen if you depend on them not checking something and then they check and your dog is grounded? I would like to say that we check several airlines before moving to Israel and many of them would allow a small enough dog I E. our basenji, in the cabin but they limited the number of pets most of them at around 3 per cabin and they would say that if someone flying who was allergic then your dog or pet had to go in the hold so you didn't really know till you got there. We were lucky to have 2 pets that could be next to each other and they both just sort of chilled and even though it was a hellish flight neither of them seemed at all stressed or bothered and we were able to keep them with us until they actually took them to put on the plane and pick them up almost immediately on landing. I just think unless you're moving the best thing for your pet is to find a way to leave it at home. If you must take the pet then you may be better off paying the extra to have a professional pet travel agency take over all the responsibility and fly your pet for you which unfortunately doesn't usually include in the cabin. I never had an issue flying puppies to their new homes in the cabin with their new owners.

For veggies I use raw broccoli and cauliflower in the bags, steam them in our steamer and it is enough for the 2 for 4 or more days mixed with their regular kibble. Mine prefer steamed rather than frozen, that said they love frozen french fries...LOL

@helle-devi - I still do not recommend Lepto vaccine. Too many Basenjis have had reaction to it. That said, if you are in an area with high issues with Lepto, you need to weigh averages. Lepto is typically found around standing water and usually from other dogs.... How much of an increase? Is your Basenji usually on leash? And if you decide to get the vaccine I would make sure it is separate from any other vaccines by at least two to three weeks. Then if you have a reaction you know it is from the Lepto shot. Also you should do Titer Test before giving shots (except Rabies since that is required by laws of each state). Many times doing a titer test will show that a dog is fully covered and do not need a booster. My C-Me will be 12 on Christmas Eve. She had her 1yr booster and never has needed one since. My Franie (will be 12 in January) needed a booster at age 9.

@italeigha I've tagged this pamphlet before so you may wish to search the forum for the link which may still work. https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet It's full of facts and studies and Liz McCargo uses it as her reference. There's a free read-only version if you'd search: PUPPY CULTURE SPAY/NEUTER BOOKLET. Title page attached, if allowed. [image: 1640079058258-2.jpg]

@scagnetti said in An Ancient Breed Indeed: @eeeefarm A friend of mine used to have a psychic dog act. Great trainer who fooled a lot of people. There has never been anyone I am aware of that could do the things Eisenmann did, but someone else apparently came close. https://americacomesalive.com/smart-german-shepherd-1927/#.Vecu7RFVhBc In the end it probably doesn't matter. If there were cues of some kind that many, many reporters missed, it would still be incredible for someone to achieve that high a level of cooperation from a dog. Most if not all trainers would be pressed to do the sort of thing Chuck did even if they walked beside the dog and instructed him on every step. I saw it, with the dog working far away from Chuck, too far for subtle cues, and no verbal instructions after the first conversational suggestion....
