It can happen in the blink of an eye….

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • it happened today. the day I prayed would never come. Tucker got hit by a car.

he unhooked, YES, UNHOOKED, his lead, and bolted, right into the road. he was outside for less than 2 minutes.

he was rushed to the vet, and after many xrays, it was determined he had NO broken bones (phew!), no internal injuries (double phew!), but he seemed to have paralysis on his right side. his right front leg, and right hind leg… were stiff, and when the vet moved them, Tucker did not move them back.

after careful consideration, we (us and our vet) decided it best to continue cortisol (sp?) for swelling and inflamation, and hold him overnight for signs of improvement (or decline). My vet thought the shock and swelling may be the cause of the problem... after a few hours of treatment, the vet called to say Tucker has regained some mobility. He can stand, and walk... a bit crooked, but he does appear to be getting better. however, one eye is a bit off now.. and my vet is concerned about a possible head injury.

so Tucker will remain at the vet's overnight, and be re-evaluated in the morning.

moral of the story - B's can unhook leads, and bolt into the road in the blink of an eye.

looks like he'll be double hooked, and possibly hog-tied in the future (kidding on that last one!).

  • that is so sad, i hope everything works out ok.

  • Oh NO! Jessi! Thank goodness it wasn't worse….my thoughts and prayers are with you and Tucker...

  • I am so sorry to hear about Tucker. I hope he makes a quick and full recovery. I am attaching pictures of the leash snaps we use. My husband started replacing all of our leash snaps with these after we had 3 of the standard ones fail in the span of 3 weeks when we got Rally 6 years ago. The are not easily unsnapped and have been very secure.

Nice to hear some good news on the forum for someone, such a shame sometimes even the simple things take time to sort out, glad your eye problems are solved to the point of being a possible allergy to something rather then being something more serious, in saying that allergies are a pain in the butt. Yay for Becca and Tucker. jolanda and Kaiser

Pat, yeah, it was many but the specialist from GA (who does CERF btw, or did, could be retired at this point) said all were iris to iris and none should cause her issues. But you can still see them. I am comforted to know that a lot of strands don't pass as I honestly don't remember seeing that limitation, only on placement. Been a long time since I looked at CERF. But the issue was and then, the person LIED. She sent me a puppy for my child, who already had more on her than any child should with my health issues, that she obviously had no clue about– a puppy she had no clue about it's eye health. And then wanted her back if I wasn't going to breed her as she would. Yeah, over my dead body.

If she's loosing hair then it sounds like it might be something more than just stress-of-an-intruder. The stray could have brought something nasty along. Maybe there's mites or something. I would take both to the vet.

I'm glad to hear the spinal tap went so easily. What a brave little girl Keba is. When I first saw she was getting a spinal tap, I thought oh–that sounds painful. I hope things start improving for her.

My first Basenji would have nice bright white eyes. I would take her mnt biking with me and her eyes would be red and watery. My other 2 never experienced this. It's probably allergies. The older I get, the worse my allergies get. I have also developed new allergies. Things like Russian Olive never bothered me, now my eyes start flowing and my sinuses become highly irratated. If the concentration is high, I have trouble breathing. Talk your vet about OTC allergy medications and dosage. If your Basenji shows the same symptoms indoors and they do not improve, consider having your ducts cleaned and an electronic air cleaner installed.
