Talking about Basenjis at the University

Basenji Talk
  • I recently started my new 'project': Veterinary Medicine. I will be studying for the next six years

Today we talked about pyruvate kinase deficiency anaemia.. And there it was.. A big picture of a (very good looking ;)) basenji on the screen! That was so cool! Haha.. Now I know for sure that all 200 Vets that will graduate in about six to eight years know about the B ;) :D

I never shut up about Mirtillo, so the people who know me al said.. Ooh.. that's your dog!!!

Another funny story.. I have a 'colleague' student, who worked in Congo for the last couple of years… He told me about the B's there! So cool! I told him that if he goes back again, he has to bring one with him ;)

  • what are the b's like in the congo? running wild?

  • Great! I met two vets who didn't know Basenjis at all. I would also like to know what Basenjis in Congo are like, could you ask your friend?
    Thanks

  • This is great, new vets learning about our dogs…
    Good work with your studies.
It a wonderful job, caring for animals.

  • Congratulations on your new career! We will all know where to find a good vet in The Netherlands…in 6 years!
    Good luck with your studies.

  • Best wishes on your career choice; another advocate for basenjis.

  • It is a wonderful job indeed..
And I hope all my colleague-students remember this leason about our B's!! :D
But I'm boring them all with my b-stories.. so for sure they will remember something about them ;)

B's in Congo are wonderful, so I've been told by the 'african' colleague. He can tell very passionate about them.. It was really cool, he saw a pic of Tillo very briefly and said: aaaah.. a basenji…!!! And I was like....
He told me they are very free in Congo.. just doing their thing.. And they haven't got that tightly curled tail there as they have over here :D ;)

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
