We've got our Belle

Basenji Talk

  • yes they are both fixed since they are rescue. Camp will be 2 in Feb and Belle is almost 2.5.

Funny about this is that I never though our male was dominant but let me tell you he is completely alpha. He snars at her if she tries to walk out of the house first, dosen't like her moving around when he's sleeping, etc. We of course tell him to stop when he acts that way but what a surprise. She's not alpha at all and goes with the flow. She has these huge dark brown eyes that make us melt. She really is a lovely girl.

  • Ha ha, that may change. He is showing her his stuff! Soon it will be her stuff too! And then, look out!

Having them close to the same age can be so much fun!

  • They are very good with sharing which is why we are so happy. They actually chew on the same toy together until of course one of them decides to run off with it them we get the chase game going on.

  • Congratulations! Glad it is all working out great. Pictures, pictures, we want pictures! :D

  • Congratulations!!!!! fyi–my two rescues had a very similar pattern to yours--the Dad was the alpha male and his daughter was (notice I say "was") submissive. Once she got comfortable in my house, she got tired of Dad pushing her around and turned into the basenji bitch I think she was always meant to be :) She started pushing back when Tyler would push her around instead of being submissive and rolling over and showing her belly, and now he doesn't push her around as much. The rescuer who had many, many years of experience with Bs advised me to not interfere with them working out their pack order--so when Tyler would growl at Zoey--I didn't interfere. Zoey learned what irritated him, and she's pretty good about avoiding those types of confrontations (like she doesn't try to push him out of his spot next to me on the bed). And he isn't so quick to growl at her when she does something he thinks is innapproriate. Fortunately, nothing has ever gotten too out of hand with either of them--in that case, I would step in.

  • yes we try not to interfere much but can't help it when she looks at us with this big beautiful eyes and when she steps out of line we can't help coming to our first basenji's rescue…...lol

  • Congratulations! I'm so, so happy to hear about your new addition!
Wishing you many, many, many healthy, loving, fun years with Belle!
    Jodie:)

  • Congrats on Belle!

  • Congratulations :) yeah…and pics...need pics!

  • Congratulations! It sounds like they are bonding wonderfully already! Bring on the pictures!

  • bonding, fighting, making me nuts..lol…yes it's WONDERFUL!!!!!

  • Luzmery CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

  • Kudos on the new addition.
Often the bitches run the houses…
My girl will let my boy get away with lots of stuff...but like a MOM, once she puts her foot tooth out, the boy is into total backdown...
This is the way it works well here.
    More stories and photos please...

  • Well Belle is starting to show signs of not taking Champs alpha behavior. She won't allow him to steal her bones (out of her mouth like he wants) and has fought back when he won't stop trying to dominate her. She will share her stuff but won't allow him to demand it from her anymore. We let them work it out and actually like seeing her give him a piece of his own medicine. Unfortunantly we are still crating her since she is not 100% potty trained and since they are still fighting we don't want to leave them out when we are now home. She doesn't like the crate and won't go in on her own even if we put the treats inside. She won't eat or drink while crated either. This morning I forgot something and ran back inside the house to find her shivering in her crate. Poor Belle but what can we do?….As for everything she is fitting in perfectly!

@eeeefarm: The digital age has somewhat muddied the waters. Once upon a time you could buy a book or a DVD and when you were finished using it you could pass it on to your friends so that they could enjoy it (you still can!), and that isn't considered stealing. Make a copy for them to view, with the same exact result (they get to see the movie or read the book), and suddenly it is illegal. The law was drafted to prevent people from making numerous copies and selling them for profit, a clear infringement to copyright. For a person to make a copy for a friend to view rather than snail mailing the original seems to be in a "shades of grey" area. I'd be surprised if most on this forum haven't at some point downloaded something for personal use that would infringe copyright if the letter of the law was applied. You make a good point Shirley.. except that even 40 yrs ago you could tape or even xerox music/books to share, but it wasn't legal. The problem is that if a person LOANS you his movie, snail mail, it goes to one person only, and it goes back to the owner… you don't get to keep a copy. If you put on a server, many can copy it. Right now musicians are in terrible financial straits over people pretty much stealing their work instead of buying it. Some music programs (I am blanking on names) pay the artists a bit every time you listen to their music, thanks to advertising. That's great. But if I want to own a song on my own computer or to burn on a disk, call me a patsy-- but yes, I buy it. I believe people who create books, music, art... they have a right to get paid as much as your plumber, mechanic or grocer. I don't sneak into movie theaters either, btw, not even if I could do it and not be caught. Many digital books can be loaned, btw. I have borrowed a few and loaned many of mine through Amazon. You could, of course, just let someone borrow your e-reader or mp3 player, lol, but that's more generous than I want to be. I don't know what the solution will be years from now... I know that cable companies tried to block recording movies and that didn't go over so well. So I do agree there are certainly conflicting and gray areas. But a cavalier approach to stealing, justifying it because the owner is rich, etc... that bothers me. And it bothers me for someone to try to pretend it is legal or for educational etc. If you are going to do something, man up. :) Thanks for the calm voice. :)

Sounds like a heavenly environment for pups! Yeah, I don't think I'd like to have my b named after a cut of meat either  We named Fiji to sound like her previous name Weegee and she adapted easily. If we bring Peanut home he may become Pinot. Red wine, red dog, y'know ;)

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
