Best Neighbor/dog sitter

Basenji Talk
  • I recently got divorced and kept both bs.

I have a couple of trips planned and now don't have my live-in dog sitter (we never went anywhere together).

I asked my next-door neighbor if he would mind coming over to feed them this last weekend. I was gone for 2 nights.

My neighbor doesn't work so he's home all day.

He came over 4 times a day, fixed the latch on my gate, bought the dogs new treats (he fed them all that I had left out for him!).

He was concerned that after the 1st day, they hadn't eaten. By the second day, he was sitting on my kitchen floor HAND FEEDING them their kibble. :D:D:D

My bs trained him in less than 48 hours!!!!:):):) Dumb breed indeed!!!!:):)

If you live in Renton and need a good dog-sitter, let me know! I paid him in freshly-caught Dungeness crab and this weekend he'll get paid in freshly-caught Alaskan Salmon!

    Worth every penny!

  • Oh my goodness! will he travel for B work ? Edinburgh has castles. :D

  • Oh, heck, I'd come pet sit for you if you're paying in Dungeness crab!

  • Aww… that brought a big smile to my face.
Such a great dog sitter is hard to come by!

  • Sounds like major win/win for everyone!

  • Terrific! Happy pups, and knowing they are safe and happy, priceless!

  • I could use a neighbor like that!!!! You lucked out…sounds like the dogs have too!

It's been my experience that sometimes my basenji just gets it in her head that she doesn't like another dog, and for seemingly no good reason. I have been able to mitigate her behavior, but this is not a cure…. First, an excited basenji is a biting basenji. Make sure he's calm. Make him sit. Exert your dominance. Stand over your dog, look him in the eye. You need to snap him out of his mindset and remind him that you're in charge and he doesn't need to be aggressive. It will take time and patience, but he can be made more comfortable... I've also found that walking together as a "pack" helps. The two humans in the middle, the dogs held on a very short leash to either side, and you ignore your dog's aggression, focusing them on the walk itself. After a short while, they should just about forget one another. But this also acclimates them to each other. Good luck!

I leave the radio on for EL D while I'm gone at work – not because it calms him down but because I don't want him going bonkers because he's hearing the squirrels making noise outside :) He generally sleeps while I'm gone.

Fine we have no incedents since then but I just dont allow situations that allow any problems to occur (keep him crated when guests are over). In general he is a very sweet & loving dog, but in the right situation he will bite without hesitation and draw blood. 99.9% of the time he is calm & loving. When injured, is a situation you can't control. I am the only one he will let near him in that situation.
