Sid Needs a Home

Basenji Rescue

  • Christy, I have done rescue for a 100 yrs. I always tell folks when they have a decision to make, error in favor of the dog. If he is happy now, let him be happy. I admire you for taking this boy in. I have had and loved many biting dogs. BUT I kept them. I knew they were suspose to be with me. I think your getting there with your thinking and I wanted to say, yes, your right. Hugs. my unmet friend.

  • Christy,
I'd like to say I have nothing but admiration for you. Here you are, with a dog you didn't want, but one that fate tossed into your life and you are standing by him and trying to do right by him. Obviously it had not be easy, but I hope you've found some reward in all of this.

  • It seems to me that you and Sid are 'meant for each other' - please give the idea of this new home a lot of consideration before making a decision to let him go.

  • I also want to say bravo to you Christy. Your actions for this dog show what a good person you are, personally I think he is luck to have you. I think you are right to keep him and find a friend for him, many people will tell you having 2 is so so so much easier than having one. =)

  • I 'second' what Agile said, you have risen to care for a dog you didn't want, but you are doing the right thing by him. He told you that YOU were the one for him and you listened. Not all dogs, or people, live wild exciting lives; many are quite content to have love, food and shelter and you are supplying all that to him. Hugs to you and Sid.

  • Christy, I think keeping Sid is also a loving decision that you are making…
like Anne said, sometimes we compare what is supposed to be the "perfect life" to what we are actually able to offer. If Sid is happy with YOU, and your family.... oh, if only basenjis could talk! :)

There is hope in the fact that the lady from Georgia was still willing to adopt him, even when she knew his history. If you must adopt him out later in life, she is certainly a testimony to the fact that there are people out there willing to accept risk and to love Sid unconditionally. :)

    :)Hugs to you and Sid!

    Whatever happened to Sid?

  • I am pleased to let everyone know that I did decide to place Sid with the lady from GA. They came and picked him up yesterday afternoon and I am eager to hear of the results in a week or so. In case you all were wondering, she has 3 other basenjis, lives on several acres of land and just recently lost Sid's grandmother. I am happy with my decision and if for any reason he does not work out in their home I will take him back gladly. Wish him the best of luck!! The poor guy has been through a lot :)

  • Hope that it becomes his forever home…. and I am sure you did what was best for Sid and yourself. Fingers crossed that it all works out! Good to know that it is a Basenji savy home with links to Sid's pedigree family.

  • They drove all the way from Georgia to get him, I live in South Florida. If that is not commitment then I don't know what is. They know every bit of his history and assure me that he will never be put to sleep and are very convinced that they will have him forever, which gratifies me to the fullest extent :)

  • Christy I know you really struggled with this decision. I hope that everything works out great with Sid and the people from GA - it sounds like they are a great fit.

I am really happy to hear this Christy! Gale emailed me and told me about what a great home this will be for Sid…and I think it will be a great match. Keep us updated...and good luck with everything :)

  • Glad that they wanted him. Wishing very strongly it works out for everyone!

  • Debbi J I am so glad that this happened. Do keep us informed.

  • Big baroos to you, Christy, for staying by Sid's side until the right home was ready… I know this wasn't easy for you, but THANK YOU for keeping Sid's interests at heart. :)

  • I hope Sid "lives happily ever after" in his new pack. Obviously you want only the best for him, and you are willing to take him back and continue to give him the best life you can if it doesn't work out. Seems like a great deal all around, good job, Christy!

  • I know this is an extremely old thread, but it kind of made me cry. I do remember the home in Georgia where Sid ended up was a home that I might even call the best home he ever had.
His owner has written to me over the years (oh, forgot to say I was the person who was in a car accident and had to rehome him.) and I've tried and tried, but cannot find her email, and don't remember her name!
I was just thinking of her when I saw on tv that IRMA is now moving up to GA, not a hurricane anymore, and I wanted to let her know I was thinking of her, and praying for her safety. I never received an email that Sid had died, and I really think I would have, so assume he is still alive. My girl that had the same sire lived to be 16, and since he was younger, it's possible.

So if anyone out there keeps in touch with her, please send on my prayers for their safety.

After reading this, ANYONE down that way, please please know up here I feel kind of helpless. There are various places that are collecting things, monetary and otherwise, so doing what we can.
I was happy to hear the folks in Florida (and Texas) are reacting the way I would, trying to take care of each other.

Like I said, I know how very old this thread is, so if no one reads this that won't surprise me
    Vickie

  • I have no idea where the dog went to, but maybe someone on here does. I heard about your car accident long after and am just glad you are okay. (( hugs ))

So happy to hear Pearl has a new home - the people on this site, and the rescue groups that frequent it, are so warm-hearted and helpful when a B needs to find a new home. It's uplifting to read about these things happening with so much garbage going on "out there"

@Rocky1: Don't worry anyone,Dogs are coming home to me here at Jaroufa Hounds. Richard always knew that he could bring dogs back and his son finally found me. Anubis and Anuket will stay with me until a home is found or I will keep them . Kathryn Are they still available? How old are they? We presently have a 20 month old r/w well behaved basenji that we are thinking about getting a playmate for. Brindle is prefered but will consider another r/w or Tri from as young as a puppy to 2 years old male. Thank you Ruben

I feel like people need to be just as careful when choosing a rescue as they are when choosing a breeder. Rescues have been found to be hoarders, to be breeders labelling their dogs as rescues as a marketing ploy, or like PETA, to kill 97% of animals they "rescue". The impression I got of this rescue was that it was not one I wanted to work with because they seemed to hold some extreme views. I am delighted to hear that I was wrong and that this is a good rescue. The situation with the "breeder" is horrible, and I am glad this girl is finally being cared for. I agree that the breeder has earned herself a place in you know where. After Estelle passed away while my MIL was in the process of trying to adopt her she is a little gun shy. It is amazing how attached you can get to an animal you haven't even met. -Nicole
