(RANT) Worst day as basenji owner…. So far

Basenji Talk
  • @DebraDownSouth:

First, the human. Please get your GF to go to the doctor (please G-d tell me both dogs up on rabies!) and get started on antibiotics. Puncture wounds infect fast on dogs and humans.

Then get the dogs in for the vet to flush out any punctures and also put on meds.

Then, get another crate so they are really separated and this doesn't happen again. You risk creating cage aggression by having them with only a divider. I never let even cages touch. I have put plexiglass between when had company and had to push close.

    Very good advice!

  • oh dear….....what a day youve had lol. sorry for laughing but the way you have written your "story well who wouldnt laugh. Never happened to me and my boy...BUT, never say never eh....you have made my evening !:p:p:p

  • oh my goodness .what a night, cant help laughing thothe way you have written thestory` welllllll. you have made my evening…

  • All I could do was laugh… it really sounds funny to the fly on the wall.
    Preventable by... a second crate.
The princess does NOT need to be bothered by an annoying boy when she is sleeping :-)

  • Oh dear, poor you. I hope they've settled down ok now.

  • First of all yes afterwards it is funny for those of u who read… Those who took it too seriously... No I don't believe in rabies shots or vets, it's like voodoo magic it's not right... It funny now, But it wasn't at the time believe u me... But all is well with our dumb boy and the pretty pretty princess

  • Hope you are joking about rabies shots and vets. And no one took it "too seriously" unless you made up things and no dogs or people actually got any bites.

Tell me you are not serious about not believing in rabies shots or vets! You and your pups are in serious jeaopardy without either! Story was funnily written, but it must have been an awful night for you, your gf and the dogs.

  • I hate to tell you that if you do not believe in rabies shots and do not give them you are actually violating a law. In pretty much all states rabies vaccinations are required by law and you can get in trouble if for any reason your dog bites, is reported, and turns out not to have been vaccinated.

I do hope you are joking…

  • He is completely joking about the rabies and vet. Both my babies had their rabies shot and up to dye on shots. My arm is fine now I have been taking care of it. Thank ya for your concerns. Everything he wrote did happen he was just being silly with the whole voodoo magic.

@EMurata said in Advice for potential basenji owner: The "weather permitting" part of your statement wont work with a Basenji. My dog doesnt care if its 100 degrees out or 10, she needs constant exercise. If outside exercise isn't available for whatever reason, mental exercise is a good substitute. Basenjis are very clever and if you keep their minds busy it often serves to minimize or avoid destructive behaviour. You are not going to wear a fit Basenji out by walking him or her a couple of hours a day, but I have seen them perfectly content to kick back and relax after half an hour of demanding mental exercise! Clicker training can be useful here.....

I'm really sorry you are in this situation and I understand your guilty feeling.. I do not agree with what is said above about dogs sleeping all day and not caring about how much their humans are there with them as long as they are loved… (sorry..) If I were you I would think hard about keeping him or not. If you know your situation will not change and you can find someone who can offer him more, I think you are doing what is best for the dog by giving him a new home. If you believe this situation will only be temporarily or if you can't find that better home, then you can try to make things a bit better for Tucker by giving him more quality time in the morning. I believe 20 min is too little time to get the energy out of a 2 year old pup. After an 8 hour sleep during the night and before 11 hours of laying in a kennel/x-pen during the day a dog needs a lot more than 20 min.. If you could get up earlier, you could try to walk/cycle Tucker for like about 45-60 min? I think loosing some of his energy will also help with him being less destructive when loose in the house. Mabye you can try to find a nice neighbour/family member/etc who could walk Tucker during the day? Even if it was only one day per week, that's better than none :) Also, if the daycare is too expensive for the entire week, maybe you can only bring him one or two days per week? Just thinking out loud here :) I hope I don't sound harsh.. And I hope you find some ways to make it a better situation for Tucker and yourself.

Yes, they are "naturals" for basenji ownership. Admiration of your basenji's cleverness is a wonderful point of view!

Our boys don't touch human food at home, when I put my dinner at the couch next to Buana or chaufuko they won't look up… :D Also when we aren't in the room they won't steal food from the table (thank god because they should be really fat already thanks to the cats and Ryan) When it's on the floor, they will steal it :D

I put a dab of butter inside his actual kong. His eyes lit up as soon as he caught the scent of the butter. He's too comical…. :D

You should call animal control and report a dangerous dog running loose. No one should have to deal with that type of danger when walking their dog.
