    I've watch Sonny go about life at normal…Playing with his friends at the farm. Enjoying our long walks and playing around the house I've slowly started to smile again and realize he's still the happy dog he's always been!

    Wonderful! News like that would make us all a bit queasy, but Sonny is still the same happy boy!

    I have not ever said that I was saying that Sonny's breeder wanted to hide things, it was a general statement. If it came across that way, my apologies.

    And while it is certainly a personal choice for you to share or not share is certainly up to you.

    But by not either releasing the breeding information or having those results public on the OFA site (which would be something that you would do with the CERF report) then it is a "black hole" for any breeder that might have the same bloodlines

    So sorry to hear this news on Sonny, but you know dogs are so adaptable like most animals. Once you have come to terms with it all I'm sure you'll go from strength to strength.

    Just for the record I'm sure one day this diesease will be eradicated. Here in the UK we eye test our Dobes for PHPV, so we can now breed clear to clear and slowly but surely the problem is under control, but it all takes time.

    I had an older blind b…she did great. Just talk to them more, and make sure they are leashed when outside of a fenced area. Otherwise, in the house, the nose keeps them
    headed to the food dish and the outside peeing area!

    I hope that you read this post. There is a need by Dr. Johnson who is leading the search for the direct Fanconi gene that he is looking for a confirmed PRA Basenji that is also Fanconi DNA tested clear. I don't remember if you ever posted his Fanconi status, but if he is clear, then his blood could make a difference between finding the gene sooner rather then later along with finding the gene for PRA. Not asking that you post public as you have already indicated that you didn't want to do that. But if you contact me privately (go to my website for email link) I can give you the name of the contact person on the BCOA health committee that you can give information to OR ask your breeder to contact this person. If you or your breeder wishes to have this information not made public, that is what will be done. We are in urgent need of a blood sample for this project.

    Sonny also has cataracts Pat and he is too young for the typical PRA we have and that Lisa Hart is looking for, so he is not exactly what is needed as she stated to the HRC.

    Lisa if Sonny's second opinion with the guru optho's comes up as PRA - drop me a line and I can get you in touch with Lisa Hart. If is second opine is not PRA - YEAH! and no need to contact anyone - though I will personally want to know. Fingers crossed.

    I'm sorry to hear about your baby's problem but remember dogs adapt to these things so well. 30 years ago my beloved GSD developed cataracts and as a result could only see the difference between light and dark for the last 5 years of his life, and he coped beautifully, as long as we didnt rearrange the furniture.

    On an additional serious note, our 16 yo Jindo, Sami, suffered a heart attack yesterday morning, was in serious pain and our vet had to put her down. As with all primitive breeds she was a handful her whole life but we loved her more because of her DGAS attitude. Please say a little prayer for Sami. Thanks

    We are so sorry to hear about Sonny's vision loss - as others have said, he will adapt, and take it one day at a time. The sadness and loss is worse for you than for him. Lots of love and being his "guide human" will make his life rich and eventful.

    All of our Bs have loved paper products too. We regularly have toilet paper "confetti" at our house, and Jubilee will sneak napkins out of unsuspecting guests' laps at dinner! He knows we will catch him so he only goes for newbies :-)

    I'm really sorry you are in this situation and I understand your guilty feeling.. I do not agree with what is said above about dogs sleeping all day and not caring about how much their humans are there with them as long as they are loved… (sorry..) If I were you I would think hard about keeping him or not. If you know your situation will not change and you can find someone who can offer him more, I think you are doing what is best for the dog by giving him a new home. If you believe this situation will only be temporarily or if you can't find that better home, then you can try to make things a bit better for Tucker by giving him more quality time in the morning. I believe 20 min is too little time to get the energy out of a 2 year old pup. After an 8 hour sleep during the night and before 11 hours of laying in a kennel/x-pen during the day a dog needs a lot more than 20 min.. If you could get up earlier, you could try to walk/cycle Tucker for like about 45-60 min? I think loosing some of his energy will also help with him being less destructive when loose in the house. Mabye you can try to find a nice neighbour/family member/etc who could walk Tucker during the day? Even if it was only one day per week, that's better than none :) Also, if the daycare is too expensive for the entire week, maybe you can only bring him one or two days per week? Just thinking out loud here :) I hope I don't sound harsh.. And I hope you find some ways to make it a better situation for Tucker and yourself.

    You should call animal control and report a dangerous dog running loose. No one should have to deal with that type of danger when walking their dog.

    It was just the initial greeting that was off right? Dogs do forget certain cues sometimes…she obviously remembered you...but it might have freaked her out if you crawled up to her kennel, particularly if that wasn't something that you normally do. Imagine this...if my husband was gone for a long time, and he didn't tell me he was going to come home while I was sleeping, and creep up to the bed...it wouldn't matter how nicely he was talking to me, I would be SCARED by his unusual behavior, and his unexpected arrival. Next time you arrive home, try just walking in like you normally do and say Hi Sheba (and puppy) like you normally do, and I bet she will be overjoyed. We have to remember that dog brains work differently than ours in a lot of ways. If we try to think of them just like people, we usually end up getting our feelings hurt :) Hey, and thanks for serving our country! Stay safe!

    My Basenji would never be able to do it. She loves to swim, but isn't that nice with other dogs. My Husky mix would totally love it though. :) We'd have to use a crane to get him back out. I have a "doggy swim day" almost everyday. The shelter I work with built a lake out back, and on the hot days we let all the dogs go play in it.
