Call Name?

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • @LindaH:

The puppy that we will be getting in a little less than two weeks has a registered name of TarSha's Manzanita Flame.

A couple of dams on the sire's side have "…of Dune" in their name. Dune was a favorite science fiction series of mine way back when. ?

Loved Dune, read them ALL. Well except the last one by his son. I keep looking at it but the one before, not so good.

Anyway, I agree, like when the call name relates to the actual name, which any Dune one wouldn't unless simply it being a desert planet. LOL though it just hit me..
Dune, spice (melange), spice is hot, Flame.
You could also use any of a million hot spice names from chili to habanero.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scale Here is some.

    Flame related:
    candle
    torch
    fire
    heat
(I like Jo's hot stuff but I like names that roll off your tongue when you are screaming it out your back door :) )
    Combustion (too long)

  • How about Johnny Storm the human torch from the Fantastic 4 comic.
    Staying on the fire theme:

    Match
    Zippo
    Bic
    Calibri
    Blaze
    Flash
    Flare
    Torch
    Flicker
    Kindle

  • Blaze is a nice synonym for Flame. Maybe when he comes home, you will realize one of the names you thought of, or one of the other suggestions, is him. Sometimes you just have to get to know the fellow first :-) He is very cute, and Tari breeds some very nice dogs. Congratulations on your soon to be home baby!

  • Thanks for all the suggestions…I would never have thought about names of chilis or names from the Fantastic 4 comics (I was a Superman fan when I was a kid). I do like "Blaze" and, from the Scoville Scale, there's a habanero called Red Savina..."Savina" may be a possibility, too, although it sounds a bit like a girl's name to me.

  • See…I love "Moto", but probably because I ride dirtbikes/motocross. I only wished I thought of that when naming one of my kids. :D It also seems a very appropriate name for a basenji in the "motocross" sense since mine all bank themselves off the couch back when doing the B500. I'm putting it on my list for the future. If I tell my brother that name, he'll want me to change one of the kids names...NOW, lol.

The only one I thought of besides the others suggested was "Sting" - since he was in the movie "Dune".

  • I like Moto too…mainly because of Madagascar #two...Motomoto.."name so nice you gotta say it twice"...eehheem back to the task..

What about Arbor..for manzanita as it is a tree type shrub..?
Blaze is great or Peter after Peter Pepper (google and refrain yourself from laughing.. :D)

  • Fire in Italian is "Fiero" - not very African, but it's a cool name also.

  • Some related Swahili translations from an online translator.

    Firewood - Kuni
    Heat - Joto
    Smoke - Moshi

  • ^aw! i think moshi is such a cute name!

  • Thanks again everyone. I believe we've pretty much settled on the name "Blaze." Of course, for the first few months, his name will probably be "No!" ;)

  • Or "hey, I got cookies"

  • Blaze is my favourite name ever. One day I dream of having a Brindle Boy named Blaze :)

  • Some very cute names suggested. A 'call' name is what he will actually go by (notice I didn't say "respond to") in your home (not show ring). A name that flows easily off the tongue, can be said fast and loud, and 2 syllable ending with an "ie" sound is what I like best. Something you can yell late at night in a strange neighborhood without having the police called, or be embarrassed, haha, lots of things to consider. Have a few in mind and see what fits him and his personality when he gets home with you. And think of all the million word-plays you will be using, Dunkie-wunkie, Dunkster, Phoenie-weenie (and don't think you won't!).

  • I like blaze and flash (Flicker was a horse so it doesn't work for me).
How about Payta or Rowtaag - Sioux and Algonquin for fire.

  • Not to mention what you will call them when you're angry! :) I also like two syllable names, but often end up using one syllable, e.g. "Perry" sometimes gets "Pay", and my horse, "Hero" often just gets "Roe".

@Buddys: I agree, well said Robyn. A very well rounded reply, and I appreciate your time in explaining the options that are out there. I am not one who advocates adopting ONLY from a shelter or rescue. I love to hear that it happens, but totally respect the choice of wanting a pedigree. I just hope that anyone who breeds for what ever reason does follow responsible guidelines for the prospective new owners, health and welfare of the puppies, dams and sires, and of the wholesomeness(?) of the breed of choice. I do have a waiting list for the future puppies (besides the ones that myself and the co breeder are keeping.) I also have a contract that states for any reason the puppies are welcome back at any time for any reason and i highly urge this to my potential owners (i say required but we all know that people fall through loops when you say required) anyways All of my dogs are health tested and the sire is health tested too. Fanconi, eyes, thyroid, and the hips I am waiting for results but she isnt in heat yet so i hope i will get it before they are bred. Trust me, I also know how rescues are. I have rescued (www.foreverfriendsrescue.webs.com) since 2008 when i rescued my first dog scheduled to be put down that day i went into the pound, and i never really stopped) so i know the effects that bad breeders can have on the dog population. Which is why we need to have more responsible breeders out there. Ones who do the health testing, ones who care where there puppies go, ones who want to help the breed, ones who give a $h!t. I love this breed. They are my world and i just cant live without them. They chose me. I chose them. Its the only breed that is right for ME. and I know this. I love showing (only been to a few so far, as i am fairly new) but i love it and i enjoy meeting new people that share the love of basenjis too and I enjoy the fun and sport of it. I really want to do what is right with breeding, which is why i have waited to find a good breeder to help me along and to help guide me as my mentor. Miah is a wonderful dog, so close to standard. and so pretty. nice pedigree and the most supurb temperament also. With my mating (dorsey x miah) I expect great things! Me and my co owner are really excited as is the sire owner. We cant wait for this litter. I know breeding is a huge controversy because of all the unwanted pets in the world, but i have been there with rescueing and if i truely didnt feel like my dog was worthy of it, and i truely didnt feel like I could do it CORRECTLY, i honestly wouldnt. but thank you for your input. I know you care, as do we. but i really am trying to do it right. Spent lots of money getting tests done, and finding a really nice bitch to start with, and getting the knowledge. (I got my first basenji 11 years ago! and i have researched and experienced the whole time!) After 11 years, i feel i am finally ready to take the step and breed my bitch to start my kennel where i want to continue to show and create loving, family pets. as well as fun things like coursing and agility, etc..

LOL when we were getting Sayblee, Leora had me on the net and we came up with 100 potential names. I picked my top ten and she crossed them all off. (she was about 9 at the time) She picked Sayblee. So Sayblee became my dog but I insisted on naming the next one, hence Arwen. But it turned out good since she doesn't yodel, but gives a very clear loud R a lot.

@moetmum: I like it its different. If you are anything like me your dogs have lots of names anyway, Rufus answers to Bear at the moment which came about from the song Rupert the Bear which I used to sing to him! Fiji is sometimes called Flea or Felicity (Her show name is Zande Feleji), Kia answers to Kissy shortened from Kissy Keeks and so it goes on! I have to admit to giving mine a few names too… Gracie is grassy arse ( She got all excited when someone said gracias or however you spell it so she ends up being called grassy arse now :D ) or Gravy (again, got all excited when someone mentioned Gravy :o ). Delilah is Lilah, Lils, Lily. Riley is Crickey ( as in Crickey O'Riley :D ) or just Ry. And poor Maya gets called MyMy at home :o Chloe our old lab is Chlodagh or Da Pig :D Thanks to my brother for the second one lol! Beau is The Bobo! And Cassia gets called Cassandra when she has been bad! Its terribly confusing at times
