What's your favourite kind of music?

  • Lenora, being Scottish, I love Celtic Music. Have you heard of a band called Wolfstone (not the Wolf Tones!)

  • First Basenji's

I love pretty much all music, especially acoustic roots/traditional/world "folk." Heavy metal and rap don't get much play in my home, but I would never dismiss a genre out of hand – the right song can fit in quite well at just the right time.

At least, that's what my radio broadcasting experience tells me. 😉 I've been DJ-ing as a volunteer since 1999 at whichever campus radio station I happen to be affiliated with at the time. My programming tastes tend towards "freeform," which means that I try to make interesting connections between diverse genres of music. But I have my soft spots -- international psychedelic rock from the 1960s and 70s (I especially like the stuff coming out of Eastern Europe, Japan, Brazil, and all over Africa), scratchy blues, folk, and American country from the 20s through the 50s, Chinese oldies from the peak of cosmopolitan Shanghai in the 1930s and 40s, Taiwanese folk and indie from the 1960s through now... it's all fair game. 🙂

  • I pretty much like every type of music…although that said, never really cared for speed metal (but I too wouldn't completely rule it out just by genre). Any music is fair game.

My favourite is probably alternative...but my musical tastes fluctuate wildly and I'm currently listening to Kanye West (My Dark Twisted Fantasy...AMAZING!!!), Camper Van Beethoven, Damien Rice, The Civil Wars, Lady Antebellum, Sting (The Soul Cages...also AMAZING!!!), Shawn Colvin, The Killers and Nina Simone.

I'm on a few international car forums and they all have running threads called "I'm Currently Listening To..." and people from all over the world write and tell what bands/singers/songs etc. they are listening to in their cars. I've discovered some really great music from those threads (including the Arctic Monkeys and The Doves). Maybe we should start a thread like that here...

  • @Benkura:

Wow. You and I must be about the same age! (Actually I've just seen your DOB!!! You have a couple of decades on me :D)

I have exactly the same taste in music. I love Metallica, Creed, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Bon Jovi, 80s music and early 90s such as Oasis. I love Robbie Williams and Michael Buble. I like some modern day Country Music (Lady Antebellum) and a little HipHop too 🙂

But if you look at my dog's names, you'ee see I'm a HUGE ABBA fan 😃

I think we are sisters! The other groups you have mentioned are favs of mine too! And as far as country, Lady Antebellum I can handle, but I almost consider it more 'Pop' than country. As for Creed, too bad they just fizzled away. The singer had a great voice. Did you ever listen to the band Days of The New? They put out a great album, but alas, their lead singer is now a drug addict. Sad. I love INXS too. Too sad about Michael Hutchence.

Wow, broad range! Now I think I know where the 'MC' in the signature line comes from.

I like the idea. It could be a thread that grows in the Chit Chat forum.

  • Houston

    oh….I want in..

I love a new band (to me)..Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, They are my favorite right now.
I also love older bands, like INXS, Depeche Mode, Midnight Oil. I also enjoy Michael Buble and Josh Groban, some ABBA doesn't hurt either, I am swedish after all..it is in my blood..
I also like country, the old time country, George Jones, Merle Haggard, some newer old style local-ish bands...Two tons of Steel, John Evans and of course Jerry Jeff Walker..I live in Texas after all...

  • I mostly listen to First Wave on Sirius satellite radio or NPR. (national public radio) Mostly INXS, Smiths, Depeche Mode, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads etc on 1st wave. I also like the Beatles (as a group or any of them individually), James Taylor, Sting (old and new stuff), Paul Simon, kt tunsall, Leonard Cohen (Hallelujah has got to be THE finest song ever written) and am smitten with Jamie Cullum. Of course I also enjoy classical, celtic, blues (bb king, muddy waters and just love koko talyor) and a little jazz.

however, i usually am listening to a book. Anyone else's library have Playaways? Right now I'm listening to Nerve Damage by Abrahams.

  • LOL there is nothing NOT on my computer except rap/hiphop/twangy country. I have international (celtic, arabic, israeli, african, french, spanish)… classical, chamber music, opera, pop, rock, lady gaga :)... I love it all, depending on my mood.

  • i, too, listen to all kinds of music. in my car it's either npr, or on xm radio 90's on 9, hair nation, or the bridge. my ipod is filled with alternative, grunge, some pop-y love songs from the 80s and 90s, a little bit of country, 70s rock, and on and on. that's one reason i love pandora radio (pandora.com). i can listen to all kinds of music with no financial commitment. recently i've been listening to the edith piaf station, be good tanyas station, nickelback station, the script station, and the jason mraz station. lots of good music i never would have discovered has come up. i love that!

  • I lean toward folk & acoustic, but like some country Robert Earl Keene, Patsy Cline, 'rock and roll', classical, most jazz. In the car, I listen to the Bridge, the Village, Classic Vinyl and of course Margaritaville on my short commute, or local public radio.
How do you get Pandora? Via computer? I love Edith Piaf.

  • pandora.com is internet radio - also available on iphone and android phones (or any with an internet connection i'd suppose). it's totally free - just create an account. type one artist you like and it will create a playlist for you based on music with similar qualities. it's seriously phenomal! i often just have it playing on my computer while i work. on the phone, i make sure i'm in a wifi area so it doesn't eat up my data plan!

  • I only have pandora on my computer but I agree it's great. But I really like Slacker.com better.

  • Benkura, I have heard of Wolfstone. It's sort of a rock celtic hybrid isn't it?

  • I have everything.. I mean everything. Country to opera, melodic death metal to Motown..punk blues to Chopin. beebob jazz to Broadway musicals.. as long as I like it I have it. I really think music is about what moves you, not the genre etc. I love local bands - live gigs, finding those one in a million artists who write their own music and lyrics, say it just as it should be, is epic.

Wolfstone Seven is a great album!

I prefer the Ivan Drever days of Wolfstone. Check out some of their older stuff on Youtube. I had 'Hector the Hero' played at our wedding and plan to name a litter of pups after their tunes some day.

Ivan and Andy now both play in The Ivan Drever Band along with a chap from my home town.

I don't get to many of their gigs anymore but used to be a 'groupy' and follow them around the place :o

  • First Basenji's

I love all kinds of music- I do like hip-hop, I used to dance with Joe Tremaine Dance Co., so anything you can dance to works for me- but I cannot handle the hard rap stuff! I have a friend who's in a pretty good band out here in Discovery Bay. The band is called Sagacious Past- if you get a chance, check them out on YouTube. They're a metal band.
