    @wizard: I would still recommend an obedience class - not only does it help with your training at home it helps socialize your dog to other dogs and other people. Work especially on the come command because sooner or later your dog will bolt because he sees a squirrel or the door got left open a crack or whatever (nearly everyone here has had this happen) and if the come command is really strong chances are you'll get him back - just a warning to be prepared. "If it does break you'll wish you had fixed it."[/QUOTE Moses has taken off twice over a leaf, and luckily he did run right back when he was commanded to come. My husband has purchased some "dog whisperer" books & videos of some kind and is doing a great job training without frustrating Moses to bad.     Mind you, Bella was a surprise birthday gift from my husband. He wanted a boxer, but I wanted a smaller dog (he said he wasn't getting either). He went to a pet store:( and saw my girl… and fell in love with her!:eek: He arranged everything and proceeded to tell me we were going out and it was a surprise for my birthday. He blindfolded me:cool: and took me there and I didn't know where I was going until I walked into the store. I was asked to guess what my present was... then told to close my eyes while they got her. I didn't know until they put her in my arms who my sweetie girl was going to be.:D How could I resist this beautiful little Basenji baby bundle of joy! I never even imagined it would be a Barkless African dog. I don't approve of puppy mills or encourage them, "backyard breeders" either.     Ok now comes the story about Missy. Missy would destroy things around the house, get into the garbage, chew on socks and underwear. Mom would punish her , tell her she was bad, and Missy would go pout. Mom would have to leave her bedroom door shut for a week or Missy would go in and pee on Mom's side of the bed, but never Dad's side. who was punishing who?:p

    Welcome!! I would also add that Basenjis are high energy dogs…umm so good luck having them "calm" down :) But if you exercise them often they will come home to sleep! Which is great down time for you. They will also do these wild sprints around your house/yard/wherver there's space!! We call it the "Basenji 500" because it's JUST as fast as the Daytona 500 or the Indy 500 :)
