I think they all do that if they think it will get them released. AJ's almost 7 years old and still does that. Once he understands I'm not going to let him out just because he cries, he quiets down. After he's quiet for a few minutes, I open the crate and let him out. He stops crying faster each time.

Quote"My mom's reaction basically amounted to "He's not all that" since at the time she just couldn't see spending the money on a purebred dog. Nicky's opinion of my mom is "Well, you're not all that either". I love this :D :D

@Forever: Yes we talked to one of the Bs owners right before we left her name was Laura (Tammen's Basenjis) She helped me out alot talking to me about zoe i'm so glad I met her. There was a fuss after the showing that delayed the next breed (a whippet owner was very upset about that) we asked laura about it and she mentioned that about the behavior. Laura is very nice, has very nice Basenjis and is a good breeder….

Too bad for the dog though. Hopefully all will settle down further as time goes on.

Don't feel bad about getting bit…she probably was sorry as soon as she realized what happened. Darting movements can garner such a reaction from any animal (and some humans) when they aren't used to contact. Chasing a Basenji, even when you really need them to come to you (sometimes especially when you need them to come) quickly becomes a game and they will play tirelessly. You could try a training exercise wherein you have really good cookies in your hand and call her just to give her a cookie. It won't take long for her to come to her name if she associates it with something good. Don't give up.

I hope I can sleep well tonight, but maybe I should drink one glass of wine before bed just to make sure :) Thanks!

@jonny: … had it gone, turkey/bacon and cheese. it seems he was not fond of the bread. we just laughed and laughed. silly boy.. and now we will not put leftover sandwiches on the counter.. (not). we will try anyway. Katie does that too! She almost never chooses to eat the bread, where Petey will eat the bread.

Welcome to my world…my new male Basenji started marking when he walked in the house and then my Rocky boy decides he needs to mark too. I've been walking around with a spray bottle of Simple Green and rags - not to mention yelling, "Go outside to pee!" a lot. Finally, today the p***ing contest stopped. Whew. (I didn't mention I have four females and one foster female who is not spayed!) Watch the vinegar, I used it and the carpet smells like a salad when the air is humid. Yuck. I've been steaming with simple green, then rinsing well with water and 1 cup of Febreze Concentrated Fabric Freshner. I buy it in the gallon size.

I put a dab of butter inside his actual kong. His eyes lit up as soon as he caught the scent of the butter. He's too comical…. :D

Dan is right. Most people do not know what constitutes good manners with dogs. I can say from experience that AJ feels more secure when he's leashed and will act more confidently. Maybe I'm his security blanket. However, when people allow their animal to rush another that is leashed and try to say the dog is just being friendly need to review Dog Etiquette 101 and try again. I think the main point here is to underscore the need for people to leash their animals until they are in a safe area for them to run. That woman in the business park is asking for trouble letting her dogs off lead. She is lucky all Buddy wants to do is play. Maybe one day she will run into one of those Pit Bulls or Rotties or Aussie Cattle Dogs who will not put up with her dogs' behavior and correct it. Of course, then she will complain loudly to anyone who will listen and try to get a law passed to ban whatever breed of dog "attacked" hers when it rushed a dog on a leash.

both our dogs took about 2 seconds from walking into the room with the needle to walking back out. jonny just looked at the vet, hansel yelped quickly and on our way we went. i cannot imagine putting them out for THAT. but neither one dislikes going either. they both look at it as an AMAZING chance to smell, jump, chase, visit, investigate,… well you get the idea. they love it there. SO MANY dog food bags to smell. lol

I try to walk all of our dogs before brealfast, but if we don't get out, because of rain or whatever..then we play, or run around in the house…then we eat..Same goes for dinner. The all get one individual 30 min walk, minimum, a day.

I have a small pickup and a crate won't fit in the cab so I have a harness restraint. It gives mine enough movement so she can turn around and stand on the arm rest between us but not enough that she can jump onto the dash (which she will do otherwise). It's the kind that clips into the seat belt thingy and has a swivel so she can turn around (some have a slot for the seat belt to slide through but then they can't turn around on the seat).

Thanks! I think it was JR walking his dogs with one of his fosters. Another one of my friends here (a non-B person) just happens to know him It really is a small world.
