The zip line gives them enough space to move around that they are not upset and crying.
If one of them wants to sit up front, I hook the seatbelt up front, and attach the carabiner to it, this way they can sit in the front or in the back.
I don't have enough room in my little Scion XA for crates.

What restraints do other people use?

I either crate if I am taking just a few dogs, and of course our newbie Podengo boy, Moses, he crates too. But I also have seat belts for Otis and my two smaller non B's that they seem to love, it hooks up to the exsisting seatbelt, not the seatbelt hardware, so they can sit, stand or laydown. I use that if I am taking all theree dogs, that way they can have the third row on our Volvo, all buckled up, I can't fit three crate som my car, so for comfort of the animal I rather use the seatbelts, rather then to dogs sharing acrate that is not intended for two dogs.

I always crate - all 3. I want them secured and as safe as possible in my car in case of an accident. In the summer they are in wire crates. In the winter I use vari-kennels.

Just curious, why different crates for summer and winter?

And I use wire crates. In the car I use 200 General Cage Crates for short trips. For longer trips 300 General Cage (gives them a little more room to move around). In the RV it was 300 wire also.

Not only is it a good idea to restrain your pets in case of an accident, but also so that they don't cause you to have an accident. They can get under your feet, block your view of the road and other vehicles by climbing in your lap.. or even falling on you if they are doing things like standing on a console..

Because it is so cold here in the winter, I think the vari-kennels do a better job keeping them warmer in the car. In the summer I want as much airflow as possible because of heat, so I use the wire crates.

I have a small pickup and a crate won't fit in the cab so I have a harness restraint. It gives mine enough movement so she can turn around and stand on the arm rest between us but not enough that she can jump onto the dash (which she will do otherwise). It's the kind that clips into the seat belt thingy and has a swivel so she can turn around (some have a slot for the seat belt to slide through but then they can't turn around on the seat).
