@Schouiffy: my girl is so different.. I have to work to keep weight on her.. She is eating about a 3/4 of a natural canned food plus a bit of dry a day. ppl still tell me she is skinny, so then I let them hold her leash for about a min before their jaws drop at her strength… must be all the mountain climbing.. cause she pulls like an Ox. My girl Rio is like this. She is all muscle, high metabolism. We call her "super model thin". She eats plenty. She gets 1/2-3/4 of a can of wet food plus 1/2 a cup of dry. In the spring when she is racing, she eats a full can plus dry. This is why she loves her coats, she has no extra padding to keep her warm.

@sharronhurlbut: Great nephew is visiting, Cody retreaved a poopie diaper and ate it. I induced him to barf, and got a lot of the white diaper fabric out of his stomach. Anything else I should do? Just keep an eye on him, I would think… sounds like he barfed 99% of it up.... If he stops eating or pooping... or seems to be in distress, then it would be off to the Vet. In my experience when you are able to induce barfing with in 1/2 to 1 hour of something ingested, you get all of it back out....

@agilebasenji: hmmm, soaking little basenji toes in salty water. good luck with that. glad he's feeling better though. I also had the same thought. It's always been a huge struggle for me to rinse off Duke and Daisy's muddy feet in a bowl of water (usually in spring from snow melt). Would appreciate knowing how you and Chance do it. ;)

Viruses and bacteria can persist on the ground, in the air, on various surfaces for differing amounts of time depending on the nature of the beast (or bug as it were) so there may not have to be dog-to-dog or even dog-to-kid contact. Hand washing and shoe removal are always good ideas but there may not be much you can do about it. On the positive side, people and dogs too usually don't get reinfected with the same bug once they get over it the first time as their immune systems are now prepared for a second bout. Unless Jass or Keoki are immune-suppressed in any way, they ought to be fine here shortly.

Tillo also has a sort of allergie for grasses.. I wonder: is this more common in B's?

I got Denamarin from the vet. You can get it from Amazon too or anybody on the web. Here's the link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001483FMM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_olp_2/103-5125310-1987067?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1223066153&sr=8-2

Zaire was tired for the first day that I brought her home. After that she seemed pretty unaffected by her surgery. It was (I think) much more traumatic for me than for her, as I was soo worried for the next week that she needed to slow down. In the end all went well, with the exception that she healed MUCH QUICKER than my vet initially thought, and I ended up having to take her in 3 days early to take out the stitches as they were tightening on her scar and cutting into the skin. As soon as they took them out her swelling on the scar went down within a day and looked Amazing as far as healing. I I didn't notice much of a difference in energy level or eating and drinking after the first day home. As for Behavior she seemed the same to me. I do think she went into a false heat earlier this month/late august and for about 3 weeks was a DEMON to her brother and the min-pin. _Yelling and screaming at them all day). But that's my princess, she will not take guff from any male. :D

@abby_basenji: Well after we discussed it further, even though she has tested clear I really don't know that much about her parents and the amount of inbreeding that was done. Do I really want to breed her? Probably not. Besides that I figured if I really want another B there are plenty of people on here that are reputable breeders that I can get a puppy from to breed if I want, or just get a puppy from. I was thinking though if I want to breed I would get one from a breeder here if I want another B just to have another B, I will get one from BRAT! Anyway her appointment is not until the 27th of october that was the soonest our vet can get her in, so that is when we are going. Good for you…. there are many responsible breeders if you decide to go that way... and certainly many in rescue that need loving homes.... your are doing the right thing.... Kudos to you!!!

@DiegosMom: I'm so happy the cheek swab test is available.. I moved and changed vets and haven't gotten Meeka to the vet to draw the blood.. I just ordered my test kit though, so much easier then collecting and shipping blood! I think BRAT and other rescue orgs need to make sure all adopters know how easy it is to test for this now, and should really encourage adopters to do it.. Amen to that….. BRAT does need to (IMO) do the test... or at the very least explain about the test and how to get it done....

I am hopeful this will be a test every basenji owner does. It gives you information so, if needed, you can be prepared. Knowledge is power and keeping our dogs with us as long as we can is the thing we should all strive for. I am so happy to live in this time. Who knows, maybe in the next 10 yrs, fanconis will be like rickets…we just don't see them.

@LiveWWSD: I know that you posted he had his evaluation in WA Pat. So what is his next step in moving towards AKC registration in January? Now the dogs that are evaluated will be grouped by their area (ie: Avongara, Lukura, etc) and BCOA members will vote on accepting the dogs. http://www.basenji.org/NativeStock/Application/ProceduresSubmittingNativeStock.pdf

@AnandaKiora: They sent it on Tuesday. A few weeks o.k.whew, I was worried they might not have got it. The take the blood and then extract the DNA… it can take a week or two to get that posted on the CPP site, they don't just post that they received blood.

As for the poison-ivy, I've talked to our diagnostic vet here at the university and dogs aren't affected by the oil in poison-ivy. However, it can stay on their hair/skin for a few days and "infect" you (you can get a jewelweed soap that works great online). So you should wash off your dog as soon as you get back from your walks. I used to take my previous beastie to my brother's place where there is some poison-ivy - I didn't think he had gotten into it since I was with him the whole time. Later that evening he was laying in my lap (it was summer, I had shorts on). A couple of days later I had a bad case all over my upper thighs.
