Thyroid testing

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My 14 year old Nika has been having some issues. When I took her to the vet her blood test showed the T4 thyroid was low. Years ago I had her tested and she was normal. I had forgotten about the thyroid being a problem. There are a number of issues and problems that can come up as a result of hypothyrodism. Please see this link:

If you suspect your senji to have any of the problems listed get them tested.
My Red and White had low thyroid as well. He was very aggressive in behavior.

  • Very good link, thank you for sharing it

@lifewithava said in Thoughts on Thyroid Testing with Hemopet/Dr. Dodds?: @rugosa So it's like the 3-year rabies vaccine-- exactly the same as the 1-year product but costs more due to the added testing. When Ava was vaccinated last year, her vet didn't have the 3-year DHPP. Hopefully, she won't need to be vaccinated again. Legally, you don't have to give anything but rabies. And legally it has to say 3 years to be "legal" for 3 yrs. As for the rest, I have every 3 yrs until the dog is old. I give no vaccines after about 7 years old unless there is some new outbreak. Generally, a dog that is healthy is fully immunized by adulthood. If they have autoimmune issues, vaccinations won't help and may make worse. So recommended, don't recommend, when it isn't the law, you get to do what is best for your dogs.

@AC~Akeyla: I was wondering when we should have our 1 year old B's checked for Fanconi? For some reason I thought they had to be a certain age. And what is the best way to go about getting them tested? And you are most likely thinking of the urine test strips, which was the only way to detect Fanconi before the DNA Test that is now widely used. Since Fanconi is a late onset, usually it was recommended that Basenjis be strip test with urine test strips beginning no later then age 3 (and tested once a month, every month). If you have a Basenji that DNA tests for Affected, then you still will need to start testing them monthly no later then age 3.

OFA is a canine health database registery. Hips and other osteo problems were the first thing they started with…but now they do all kinds of other testing. Our Fanconi test is done through OFA. go here and check it out www.offa.org It is a wonderful resouce for all dog owners, not just breeders. If you are considering buying a basenji puppy, you should be checking here to confirm that the parents (at least one, preferably both) have been tested for Fanconi Syndrome/

@jessi76: another vac I didn't see on your list is Lyme. Ask your vet about it IF tics are prevelant in your area. where I live, ALOT of dogs are coming down with Lyme disease (spread by deer tics), so I didn't even think twice about getting my dog the vaccine. although we keep him on a flea & tic preventative, the vaccine is another added precaution. like I said though, only if tics are an issue in your area. No, they don't seem to be a big deal here, the worst "pest" we have aside from fleas are chiggers or you may know of them as sand fleas. Thanks for you help.
