Weight gain after spay?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I'm taking Zhara in next week to get spayed. Can I expect her to gain some weight after the surgery?

In her case, some weight gain would be a good thing - she's a little underweight.

Any comments from those who have had a female spayed?

  • I have had 4 basenjis over the years, 2 were spayed young and stayed slim, the other 2 were spayed after having pups (we think) and both gained a bit of weight. I know the first was not a thin girl to start with, but the other was very slim and gained about 6 lbs and has stayed stable at that weight for over 8 years now. Not really fat, but chunky! So part of it depends on the dog, if she is slim she may well stay that way.

Typically, spayed bitches can gain weight, but it is not the norm… that is pretty much an "old wives tale".... she just might be or seem to be underweight because that is just her... at her age.... None of my bitches (6 and counting) have gained weight due to spay.... some with age.... which is just the body slowing down... Interesting that once they really get to be "elders" it is a real chore to keep weight on them....

  • Zhara's spay operation went very well. I brought her home yesterday morning, and she's eating and drinking normally.

She is very lethargic - sleeping "uncurled" on her side most of the time, which is unusual for her. I know that after a major surgery, when the dog has been put under general anesthesia, it can take a few days for the drugs to completely wear off.

Does anyone else have a story to share about when their dog was spayed/neutered? How did they do after the surgery in terms of eating, energy level, or any other behavioral issues?

    Thanks much! :-)

  • Zaire was tired for the first day that I brought her home. After that she seemed pretty unaffected by her surgery. It was (I think) much more traumatic for me than for her, as I was soo worried for the next week that she needed to slow down. In the end all went well, with the exception that she healed MUCH QUICKER than my vet initially thought, and I ended up having to take her in 3 days early to take out the stitches as they were tightening on her scar and cutting into the skin. As soon as they took them out her swelling on the scar went down within a day and looked Amazing as far as healing. I

I didn't notice much of a difference in energy level or eating and drinking after the first day home. As for Behavior she seemed the same to me. I do think she went into a false heat earlier this month/late august and for about 3 weeks was a DEMON to her brother and the min-pin. _Yelling and screaming at them all day).
But that's my princess, she will not take guff from any male. :D

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

@gigi See, we're adults! We found an agreed upon thing, for I an cranky. I am too tired to find it, but I recall that giving less than a full dose may not be legal if the dog bites

Most Vets will not recommend spay during season and unless there is a medical reason for doing it now, will recommend waiting till she is at least 3 to 4 weeks past the end of her season. I would also agree you should put it off and wait. Keep in mind however the neutered males can achieve a tie with a bitch in season, however considered "safe sex"… but since you have two males, this could present a problem, so something to keep an eye on

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

17 is normal for a male… From the Basenji standard: Size, Proportion, Substance Ideal height for dogs is 17 inches and bitches 16 inches. Dogs 17 inches and bitches 16 inches from front of chest to point of buttocks. Approximate weight for dogs, 24 pounds and bitches, 22 pounds. Lightly built within this height to weight ratio
