Your Advice Multiples

Basenji Talk
  • Sounds like a good match to me…. I think that the ages are great as they can continue to grow up together..... Remember, however... double the trouble...gggg

  • thanks for the feedback we appreciate it..

  • I advise against it….oh, wait...you are talking multiple dogs! I mistakenly thought I was on my 'multiple kids' forum ;) I think two are a tiny bit easier than one, because they always have each other...as long as they get along...

  • Two (or more) who get along make life easier on you. They have each other for play, and keep each other company when you're not there so you don't feel guilty if you are working an extra day or long hours. I think they are happier with a pack of their own kind. If you were owned and cared for by giant creatures, no matter how kind and loving, you would likely loved to have another human for company.

It sounds like a perfect match to me. Though…once in your home, they may have squabbles for a few days or weeks till pecking order is worked out so be prepared for that minor "oh no did we do the right thing getting this second dog" period.

  • we have always tried to have 2….and no matter how much they like u,i think they like having their own 'kind' around!!!!

  • Is your current dog pretty much the dog you want? In other words, is she a joy for you to live with (most days anyway)? If she's at a good place in her training, and the humans want another dog, go for it. If, on the other hand, she's a holy terror to live with, now is not the time to add another. New pups will always learn the bad things in less than 1/2 the time it takes to learn the good behaviors. There's some sort of mathmatical equation that gives more weight to the worst of the behaviors, but I don't really remember the entire thing.

  • We loved having one but found that two is soooo much better. We got both from BRAT and they are both males. One is the boss and the other one doesnt care a bit about that, but he wont lay down and get walked all over either. They love each other. When we take one to the vet for a short visit the other is VERY upset.. and we can usually count on a "mess" to clean up, he is so distraught… sure hope they both live a long time but the same amount of time. ... they will be soooo lost without each other. Yes, two is much better than one. :)

    I completely agree with this.

And one other thing with raising multiple puppies is that they really need to be socialized separately from one another so they do not get too dependent on having the other one around. It's not fun having dogs who freak out when they can't be with each other.

  • Lesco, where are you getting your pups from?

@EMurata said in Advice for potential basenji owner: The "weather permitting" part of your statement wont work with a Basenji. My dog doesnt care if its 100 degrees out or 10, she needs constant exercise. If outside exercise isn't available for whatever reason, mental exercise is a good substitute. Basenjis are very clever and if you keep their minds busy it often serves to minimize or avoid destructive behaviour. You are not going to wear a fit Basenji out by walking him or her a couple of hours a day, but I have seen them perfectly content to kick back and relax after half an hour of demanding mental exercise! Clicker training can be useful here.....

When my dogs were young they'd back away from their collars or scratch at them because they were new and scary. I don't keep collars on my dogs in the house because they play roughly and I don't want any accidents. When they DO see their collars it means walk time and they get so excited they shove their heads though on their own. When it's associated with something positive they quickly learn to love their collars!

that does seem excessive, Id take her on a leash walk a few times a day, not long walks, shes had surgery. if she is wearing a cone to prevent her from licking her stitches out, shell need a walk or two, If your giving her pain meds, ( shich I did for mine) shes be kind loopy ) The stiches will bother her, Basenjis like to chew, and groom, I had to isolate mine because of the licking each other, and concern.. It will be fine, some vets are just over protective,

I think a good cartel saying DONT OPEN is nice, Laika was left on the airport by me one night, so the people there get out of her cage.. i think they got a bad time catching her because first they said to me the next morning laika was missing, then they say that they got her. pff I left her because when Maca arrives i was there waiting for a delay flight almost from 5 pm to 2 am and i was told they were open to 10 pm, So i arrive at the airport at 9 just to find the office closed, and the poor Laika inside! so i return next day for her.. She is very nervous and give me some bites when i put out of the cage.. and thats all. Well i deserved for sure.. lol

I too have flown with a pup in a Sherpa… one thing, be sure that they have a not been fed right before... and also the longer you can keep the pup awake, the more likely they will sleep the entire time. I kept the pup up and playing for at least 3 hours before the flight... and I do mean playing hard.. (I was pretty tired too...)I also did a 5+ hour flight, no accidents. But a friend of mine had a great idea... and it does work, take along some puppy wee/wee pads... you can go into the bathroom, put down the pad on the floor and let the little one go... however with as short of a flight you are doing, I doubt it will be necessary....

@Gooby: There's also this one: When your humans take you out, poop twice. Rest assured, they only brought one bag. Oh how true …
