Man Gets Basenji Tattoo

Basenji Talk
  • I have two tattoos, the first is my dear departed Thunders' paw print. It's right above my heart.I got it four months before he passed.
I'm so glad that I did,as I had no idea he would leave me so soon after.

The other tattoo is of him running full out. It was taken from a pix of him at a LGRA meet. It's on my left upper arm.
I feel very comforted by having these tattoos,I look at them daily and remember how special he was.
I would recommend anyone who loses a special B to get a tattoo of them. It is a healing thing. At least for me.

  • I don't have any tatoos, mainly because I have never been able to pinpoint something I know I would be happy with for the rest of my life. But I am pretty sure I could be happy with a Basenji tat forever :)

  • @Quercus:

That guy (Chad?) used to post here :)

I was wondering when i was watching it if he might be a member, really pleased he is, was lovely to see someone so positive about the breed. And he was rather lovely to watch ;)

  • Awww… I approve!

Rocky1, would love to see pictures of your tattoos if you don't mind sharing.

  • There are a few exhibitors in the northwest that I have spotted basenji tattoos on and I remember seeing a spread in the basenji magazine or maybe the BCOA bulletin about someone who had a mural done on her upper back in color. It was pretty cool.

I have tattoos myself but have yet to acquire anything basenji related. Key word, yet… :)

  • Wow, very cool. Quite a mellow basenji IMO.

  • Here is my father's tattoo of our Geasy :).

I have two non-Basenji tattoo and I really envy of this dad's tattoo.
But I am planning to get Basenji tattoo soon.

I remember seeing this on your dad while at a show and thought it was great:D

  • Irena - love your dad's tatoo of Geasy - the artist did a wonderful job! If I were a guy, and if I were younger, and if I could stand the pain, I'd definitely have a B tatoo!

  • Irena, your dad's tattoo is beautiful!
I've been thinking about getting one of Cody or to represent Cody, but I haven't figured out exactly what yet. I have about 17 regular tattoos now, so I think my best friend deserves to leave his mark too :)

  • Irena - What a super tattoo of your dad's.

I think it's a lvvely idea and I'm admiring of you brave people with your tattoos.

  • Irena, your Dad's tattoo looks realy good.
I'm not brave enough to have a tattoo

My Rosa wrote the "How To Be a Basenji DIVA" manuscript - as many rules there were, it was so worthy of a 'script' at the end! She, and all her offspring, had spring and fall heats, but I only bred her once in the spring. That produced one puppy, my Captain. She always ruled over her pups, except when Captain came along - she did what HE said when he was about 2 weeks old!

@jordandwilly - Thanks for clearing that up.... 9-5 is just fine, IMO.... I work and have always had to leave mine when I was at work, never an issue. That said, we were able to set up the house that access to the backyard (with 10 to 12' privacy fences) with a doggy door and a dog room in the house for them, Locks on the gates so there is NO access for anyone. Dogs sleep 90% of the day so being at work doesn't bother them... never have mine even when I had a litter in the house (And have been in the breed as owner/breeder for 35+ years). You can hire a dog walker to take them out mid day..which is a good solution. and give them a mid day meal depending on their age. I do not and never have used free feeding, period. Especially if you have more that one... you never know what/who is eating what. And you can set up camera's on line to watch them from "afar".... LOL. Keep in mind people that many of us need to work and have day jobs. The most important thing is the time you need to spend with them when you are home. Example would be, if you have young children and you work... when you get home you are going to spend your time with your human children... NO dog would be happy if left out... they need their time also because they are a family member and need as much time as a human child. Again in my opinion

@lovedogs @eeeefarm said in should I get a basenji?: wait until the time is right, even if you really, really want a dog now I agree... with everyone. Sometimes you just need to accept that (no matter how much you want a dog/car/kid/house) you aren't quite ready for it. I waited 5 years before I brought my Basenji home and it was probably the most adult thing I've ever done. I was still in recovery from a spinal injury and knew that I wouldn't be able to provide (her) the exercise she would want and require. Waiting made all the difference in the world. Whan I was finally ready, the most perfect little girl was ready for me. Don't fret about it. You can read, research, consider all of your options, and really prepare yourself. (Don't look at puppy pictures online! You'll fall in love without even meeting the pup(s) and it will pull at your heartstrings.) Remind yourself that "one day you will have a Basenji", just not today.

There are some breeders out your end of the Country that could probably help you out. Cheryl Myers Eggerton is a Judge and also a breeder, she is in Minto NB and has Connamore B's, Simone Guadet (Beaubri) is on PEI, Valerie Rodger (Miloki) is in Beaver Bank NS. I have two that I can leave out without issues, and two go in the crate when I am not home. It is all dependant on the dog. But, like Anne states, puppies are a lot of work and sometimes the older dogs, young adults and retired show dogs are the better ones to start with. You can find all of the above on the Basenji Club of Canada website under breeders. At least with Val, you could probably visit her since she is in NS directly. Let us know how it goes,

Well, it started when I was out with my 22yr. old son at the mall. He said, "Hey, Mom lets look at the dogs in the petstore ", I replied, "I don't have time besides your Dad has too many ideas what a dog has to be like for us to get one", I'll never find a dog like he wants". That was 3 yrs. ago this Jan., and I had never heard of a Basenji. I called DH about 3 times the night I found Sahara to persuade him we needed this dog, but she was very expensive so it took some work talking him into me buying her. She is owned by my son, me and my husband, she lives with my husband and I. She is the best dog I have ever owned, and I have had many through my lifetime. I would never get another dog from a pet store (didn't know about puppy mills)but I would have not known of this breed if I hadn't stopped and looked that night. My husband loves this dog so very much, he buys her whatever she wants or needs. I love her also, she is my joy and I can't stand to be from her for very long, we just got back from a trip and it was so hard missing her. My son said that she didn't eat very good while we were gone and was very destructive in the house. Guess she missed us as well!

@JazzysMom: Well, it's a good thing we went straight to a breeder! I'd considered BRAT, but decided to get a puppy instead. Good thing, because with six kids at home and lots of other kids in and out, we'd have never gotten a dog! Sad isn't it….
