Shedding like crazy

Basenji Talk
  • My mom owns the basenji (Penny), but we have her over often and we're watching her the entire weekend while she's out of town. The problem is she is lately shedding LIKE CRAZY! It has been hot, so I don't know if it's from that…possibly diet change? She normally doesn't shed much at all so this is new and very frustrating. I keep brushing her and brushing her (outside b/c it just flys all over when I do this), and i gave her a bath this morning which may have helped some, but I can't touch her or she loses more.
Anyway, anyone have experience with this or advice for what to do?
    Thanks!

  • Ours do this every so often…. we just brush a lot, put a sheet on the couches so it is easily washable, ZOOMGROOM while bathing, and vacuum a LOT. once they quit, it is much much better... took a few weeks... also, we have found that using dryer sheets with the laundry helps keep it off our clothes/stuff. Not fun. :( but they are not doing it now. so maybe it is just an every so often thing.

  • My baby senji is shedding but I assume it's puppy coat. My other two had minimal shedding… but they got very high quality kibble and raw so coats were great.

  • I find it's been a heavy year for shedding, not just basenji's but other breeds as well. My male is still shedding and looks like he rolled in mothballs. His coat was very thick this year as well. I'm just bathing, brushing and once every two weeks using the hot oil treatment on his coat.

  • Shaye's coat is very short, but she seems to be shedding quite a lot - I brush her, and lots of hair flies - it's like her coat is getting even shorter because of the very hot summer we're having. It's making all the scars show up that she has gotten from getting too close to the cat's bad mood. My B mix sheds a little constantly, and that hasn't changed.

  • I'm in Texas (hot) and Bella has been shedding horribly. I can lightly grab a fold of skin, pull without using any force and come away with 10-15 hairs easily. She is leaving hair all over the house, but seems to have plenty more. Otherwise is perfectly healthy. Not sure what is going on but am guessing the heat?

  • Cairo is almost 8 months now, its hot here in Eastern KY. I think that he was just loseing his puppy coat, but he has been shedding like crazy for the past month. All his fine, softer fur is about gone except for the back of his neck. He's gettin' better looking everyday he gets older. Still mischevious as I-don't-know-what.

  • For all those with puppies, this is the age (6 to 9 months) that they will shed their puppy coats…..

  • Mine always seem to shed when others are in their best coats - usually in the show 'season'!!! Its quite a joke amongst my showing friends. On the other hand whe nothers are at their worst mine are at their best!!!

  • All of mine are having a longer and larger shed right now than is usual. I think it because it has been unusually hot and humid for a longer time than normal.

My first question is why are you bathing her every two weeks? Is she roling in manure or something else with a nasty stench? I have 4 basenjis in my house. Two that are going on 2 years old: One bitch was shown in early July… she was bathed that weekend. One bitch was shown back in March.... she was bathed in late March. The two 5 month old pups were bathed in mid-August for the first time. I don't have grass in my yard.. just pine trees and weeds and wood chips... which means they are in dirt all the time. I wipe them down with a hot wet towel when they come in... but that is it. I must preface this with the fact that I HATE DUST AND DIRT of any nature to touch me. If they were dusty, I would wipe them down. But bathing them every two weeks? HECK NO. That is why I have basenjis... I am not a groomer, and hate dealing with grooming... bathe for shows, and very little else. And my dogs are CLEAN to the touch.... Perhaps you should bathe them a bit less often and use a super good scrubber to scratch out the dead hair… that should be enough I'd think.... of course, I am coming from the point that I don't have dogs that get an undercoat... so perhaps it is quite different. Please don't take offense at what I suggest... I just can't imagine having to bathe a basenji that often.

yes, vets…go and see another one! I lost one dog because the vet took too long to find out that my previous dog had be poisonned by rat poison (an italian greyhound). vets do what they can of course but...some are definitely better than others, so...when in doubt, change!

Kiro Gurl, That's a great pic. I have a bay window on which my 2 are constantly watching the goings on in the neighborhood. Someone in the house will say, "where's the dogs?" and the inevitable reply is "they're on Neighborhood Watch duty." Needless to say we are alerted to every unwanted intruder…..marauding cats, wilily squirrels, and those despicably lawless off leash dogs (with the occasional 'bad to the bone' large wild bird thrown in for good measure;) ) sigh, I feel sooooo safe. I thank Darwin every day that they don't have opposable thumbs 'cuz they'd be unlocking and opening the door for anyone they deemed as a suitable playmate, tummy scratcher, or cuddler:D ! Now that you have a 'window watcher' too, I suggest you invest in windex. There's nothing better to get those dog snot streaks off the windows!! (BTW...welcome to the forums toddsgirl)

Hi Quercus! Tano's breeder was Maripat Webber of Etukon. I believe both her siblings went on to be show dogs. Tano took after her mom as far as coloring…being the only red and white of the litter. ^_^ I'll push up Tano's appointment for her physical and request the full thyroid thing. If this is all related to thyroid I definitely want to get it looked into asap! Thank you for pointing out that it could all be related! She really develops a thick woolly undercoat in the fall/winter. You'd think the house wasn't near 70 degrees all winter! If her hair was a little longer I could possibly clean it up and felt with it--she sheds that much! :D
