Where does your basenji like to be rubbed?

Basenji Talk
  • Nala likes her chest rubbed. She sits and "scoots" to get herself postioned for you to rub her chest. She then closes her eyes and her ears relax into "the flying nun" position and nearly falls over sometimes. It's hysterical. She does like it when you rub her ears inside and out, she kind of groans while you do that.

  • Back-side-ears-wherever-as long as they're close to me!

  • Senji likes to have his throat and neck scratched. He stretches his neck up and tips his head back with his eyes closed. And if you stop, he smacks you with his paw. He also likes to have his chest scratched and belly rubs. If I walk into the room, he immediately rolls over on his back for a belly rub.

  • Sahara will jump in the recliner and stand in between my legs, butt facing me and wait for me to scratch her ham hocks (you know the top of her back legs. She also likes for you to scratch her on the back right in front of her tail, her skin sometimes flakes there so I guess the skin is dry. She will close her eyes and stay as long as you keep it up.

  • OOOOH THE BELLY !! My girls love their bellies rubbed. They will turn on their backs and scoot up next to me. If I don't rub their bellies right away, they nudge on my hand until I do!! In no time they are snoring….zzzzz ....
Isn't it funny how loud a B can snor ?????

  • dash loves to be scratched on the back of the neck. around where his microchip is.

  • Jojo likes to be rubbed "all over" but she really seems to enjoy the area around her tail the most…her dad puts his fingers around each side of her tail and kneads the area and she melts...

  • Magnum loves to have his back-end rubbed and scratched. In fact, I have a little song I sing while I do it:

    Rubbala, rubbala, rub my bum
    Rubbala, rubbala, rub my bum
    Scritchala, scritchala, scritch my bum
    Scritchala, scritchala, scritch my bum

Back and forth forever (or until my hand gets tired).

Do you think it's strange that I'm the only one in my family who'll do this for my boy?!?! (In fact, if he "assumes the position," my son and husband will send him directly to me for bum rubbing.)

    I know, I'm weird. :D

  • I think that is great that you came up with a song to go along with the "bum" scratching. I started this off by saying that Lillie likes her back rubbed. I have noticed lately that she likes it even more if I continue rubbing her more towards her "bum" and down her thighs. I am not as creative as you are. The only thing she hears when I scratch her is "hey Lillie girl…who's a pretty girl..Mommy loves you! Not very original!:D

    Jodie:)

  • Thanks, Jodie. I don't think Mags gives a rip about the song ("Just rub and scratch, no singing necessary, PLEASE!"), but it makes me feel happy!

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

We have the movie, only because it is about a Basenji, but even my kids {who were raised on old movies} think it's a bit much – the Basenji crying had them giggling out loud. They did all want to smack the kid around for his training techniques though, LOL. Oh, and you're right agile, it's a Warner Brothers movie.

Kiro Gurl, That's a great pic. I have a bay window on which my 2 are constantly watching the goings on in the neighborhood. Someone in the house will say, "where's the dogs?" and the inevitable reply is "they're on Neighborhood Watch duty." Needless to say we are alerted to every unwanted intruder…..marauding cats, wilily squirrels, and those despicably lawless off leash dogs (with the occasional 'bad to the bone' large wild bird thrown in for good measure;) ) sigh, I feel sooooo safe. I thank Darwin every day that they don't have opposable thumbs 'cuz they'd be unlocking and opening the door for anyone they deemed as a suitable playmate, tummy scratcher, or cuddler:D ! Now that you have a 'window watcher' too, I suggest you invest in windex. There's nothing better to get those dog snot streaks off the windows!! (BTW...welcome to the forums toddsgirl)

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
