Fluid build-up in stomach- HELP

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • You and your girl are in my thoughts tonight! Poor little girl, give her lots of hugs and keep her hydrated. (Maybe some low-salt beef or chicken broth or pedialyte if she will drink it) Hugs

  • I am so sorry to hear about Meeka. It sounds far too like what I just went through with my cat Spot except his cancer was in his lungs and that was where his fluid built up in. I really hope you get better news.

  • I'm so sorry Sarah to hear about this with Meeka. In 2007 my red/wht Ringo had a tumor show up on the side of his stomach. He wasn't bloated and didn't have any fluid build up. The tumor was hard and round and just grew and grew and the bigger it got the less he could eat till at the end he couldn't eat or drink, lost a lot of weight and was dehydrated. It was fast about 1-1/2 to 2 weeks. I think the tumor emits a toxin and they can't eat. I used a puppy formula mixed with chicken that I liquefied and used a large syringe to inject it into his mouth.
But let's not freak out as maybe it's not cancer. Let's see what the test shows on Tuesday.

  • Thanks everyone.. I'm trying to stay positive but I don't have a good feeling about this. 2 weeks ago she was perfectly fine, and now this.

She ate a little this morning, and she is still drinking water. Other than that she is just laying around, she doesnt want to go outside or do anything. I am going to call the emergency vet to see if I should bring her in to get more fluid drained to keep her comfortable until Tuesday. It looks like it all shifted to one side, because one side looks normal and the other is very large.

  • Sarah, I just read this thread..I am so sorry to hear about Meeka, you are all in our thoughts and prayers this morning. I will send positive vibes coming your way.
Please keep us updated, I know tuesday can't come fast enough.

  • I called the vet- they advised not to bring her back today since she is eating/drinking, and not in pain. the side that is larger is the side they drew fluid from yesterday, so she said some fluid may have leaked and formed a pocket on that side. so as long as she is comfortable i will keep her at home with us. i will keep you all updated. thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

  • I'm sorry to hear about Meeka not being well.
    My prayers are with you.

  • So sorry to hear about Meeka, hope she remains comfortable and that the outcome is treatable.

  • So sorry about poor Meeka, what a worry for you. My thoughts are with you and i hope she makes good progress.

  • Small update:

I've noticed she is drinking a lot more water than normal, and peeing more as well.. any clue why?

  • I wish you the best with Meeka. As for the update, I would probably say kidney function is up.

  • @nomrbddgs:

I think that would the kidney values would be up (BUN and Creatinine) , not the kidney function, most likely the function is decreasing

  • I'm so saddened to read this thread. Hope you find a diagnosis soon and a treatment plan to help your Meeka.

Hydration is important. Let her drink…BUT... intake and out-put could be a key to a diagnosis. Hyper-hydration can be as fatal as dehydration. Please regulate water intake until your vet advises differently.

  • Our prayers and best to you. In our thoughts hope all goes well.

  • Fingers crossed for poor Meeka, hoping for a positive outcome.

  • My heart goes out to you. I will pray for wisdom and direction for you guys, and that any results from tests are accurate.
I was taught to use a little Olive Oil ® to help with meds. -plus when they do not want to eat due to health. Tablespoon. However, I would suggest speaking with your vet. if you give along with meds. - Suggestion about broth earlier is excellant ... also, I figure you know already, to keep as much energy in your baby to fight and function - giving nutri-cal type product esp. since Meeka is not eating- I've been in this type of fight before.

Will say prayers for you all, D

Yes, Pat you're right, that's what I meant.

  • I am still hoping and praying that Meeka is feeling better and that there will be an answer tomorrow for you and Meeka when you visit your vet.

  • this is probably a stupid question- but they were throwing so much information at me when we were there Saturday.. I dont remember them saying anything about the kidney.. Does the blood test give them the kidney levels?

Yes, it does give the kidney value levels in a blood test. They might have been in the normal range at that time, but could have gone off since then if she is drinking and peeing more now. Good sometimes to get a copy of the results.. then you can look at it at home… most will show what the normal ranges should be.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

@khanis: I have NEVER heard of these legendary fleas or mosquitos…. and I am a Portland native... and have NEVER had a flea issue with my basenjis [Whippet, IG, RR, Newfs, or cats]. Our home ranges from 3-6 basenjis on average and still no problem, even with dogs that come/go for showing or boarding. The only time I have treated them [my dogs] was prior to traveling to the midwest or east coasts. During the time I lived in Portland, which is at the very northern end of the Valley and has more wind than the lower Valley, I noticed a lot fewer fleas and 'skeeters. I can understand why you haven't experienced them. Try camping on the shores of Fern Ridge sometime. Make sure you take lots of DEET. I grew up there and, man, the 'skeeters are horrible! I can remember our dogs and cats had a rough time of it, too. We were always picking fleas off them. But that's the difference between living in the city and living in the back woods. The conditions in the lower Valley are perfect for the growth of fleas and mosquitos: standing water everywhere and very few hard freezes. (Gramma lives in the "sticks" too and has lots of both in her area outside Salem.) But, again, back to the subject, she used Brewer's Yeast and had pretty good results with it.

On any older dog, cataracts are very common… It would be very hard for a Ophth. Vet to mix up PRA with cataracts. Did you take your Basenji to a board certified eye vet?
