Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I'm happy to hear all is going well for everyone - what a relief! How is your baby doing?

  • Well, Cody came home last night. My B-girl Aurora was happy to have her housemate home again. She sniffed him all over as soon as we walked in. Of course the vet was like no running, jumping up on stuff and going up an down stairs. There are stairs everywhere in my house. He has to go down a flight of stairs on the deck just to go potty in the back yard. He's in a lot of pain so I have heavy duty pain meds, and a lot of other drugs. We are not out of the woods yet. I have to be on the look out for any signs of leakage around the wound, fever, weaknes, any signs that something has gone wrong inside and its not healing. Once he had his pain meds last night he was very snuggly with me on the couch.

  • So happy to hear that he is home again. Cody is in our thoughts, I have told my kids all about poor Cody's missfortune, and every morning they want to know if I have heard anything, at night my 9 yr old prays for his swift recovery. He is definitely in our thoughts.

  • Poor thing, lets hope he's well on his way to recovery. xxxxxxx for Cody

  • I'm glad he is home…I'm sure both you and he are too...you all need some rest after a harrowing experience. Keep us posted on his recovery...

  • So happy to hear Cody is home. I know you will keep a very good eye on him. I do wish you the best trying to hold him down when he gets ready to run and play. That will also be a great day. Lets all us know how your doing and Cody. Take care.

  • I can't believe how fast Cody has bounced back from surgery. He was sluggish maybe a day and 1/2. Now he acts like his old normal self except he has 30 staples in his belly. I tried to catch him before he ran out to the backyard this morning, but missed. He ran down the flight of stairs! I have been feeding him the vet recommended can dog food and he loves it. I got a can and 1/2 in him within 24 hours. Still hates to take those pills though. I can't hide it in the food b/c now he looks for it. I am afraid to feed him anything else yet. I don't want to jinx a good thing. Thanks everyone for their suggestions, prayers and encoraging words. fingers crossed I hope we never have to do this again!

  • That is great to hear… and Kristii was the same way.. within a day of being home from surgery she was just like nothing ever happened (like Cody with 30+ stapes in her belly)...

Sounds like Cody is over the "hump" and on the road to recovery....

  • Happy to hear Cody is doing so well. Have a super weekend with the babies.

  • Awesome news. I am glad he is back to his own self and I am sure your house will be filled with B-500 before you know it..

  • great news

  • How is Cody doing?

  • Cody is doing great. He his back to eating 75% hard kibble 25% soft. He got a toy out last night and asked to play. He gets his staples out on Tues. I can't wait b/c he needs a bath! <<shhh>> don't tell him that.Of course the problem now his for him not to pull a staple. LOL I can't believe its been a week since his surgery and how fast he has recovered. Wished us humans recovered that fast from major surgery.</shhh>

  • Brilliant news

  • Way to go Great News keep up great healing.

  • Truly awesome news. We are very happy here in the Lopez' residence to hear of his speedy recovery..

  • Wonderful news. They heal fast, because they need to so often.

  • Great news - so glad he is doing well!!

  • One of our basenji's (Willow) has a very sensitive stomach. At least once a year she will go through a spell of vomiting, diarrhea and no eating or drinking. The vet said they can pick up viruses here and there so hopefully it is something like that and will work itself out. Willow usually gets better within a week or so but she has gotten dehydrated before and needed fluids. Like the emergency vet, they give her an antibiotic and nausea medicine. Good Luck!

  • Cody got his staples out last night and was given a clean bill of health.(although he's not clean) Yeah! He got a special treat for being a good boy at the vet. We are hoping for a trip to the dog park this weekend so he can run around and play with other dogs. With a bath following. :)

Unfortunately for us Maia has never done well with chicken, she loves it and eats it but it gives her diarrhea and seems to mess up her over all health. We did blood work again and her liver enzymes decreased by 30% which is great! Her actual health though is not so good so that is bad. We can get her to eat which is good, but the food control is not great salmon, ham(boiled a few times to remove the salt), breaded cauliflower, Mac and cheese. Whatever we can get her to eat. It’s crazy! We have her booked with a chiropractor to check her nerve function and we are ready to get prednisone going if it is ibd. We are working closely with our vet daily, she currently is on metronidazole and amoxicillin and gabapentin. Thursday I thought we were going to lose her and she has rallied. I hate optimism as I don’t do well with a broken heart but I am hoping for the best right now. She is on 2 billion probiotic per day as well. Every bite of food I can get into her I think, ok 1 more day at least. If I have to spend all day hand feeding her, I will. She is finally sleeping and twitching a little less! She is going up and down stairs ok, not great but ok and she is no longer falling over. We are far from out of the woods but I have seen some small improvements. Thank you all for your words, encouragement, advice and stories of what you have gone through. It is tremendous to me how kind you are. Thank you for taking some time out of your day and trying to help! We so appreciate it. Mai Mai means the entire world to us and every word, suggestion, or story we take into account and thank you so much for being such a loving wonderful community. With lock down and a sick pup we feel quite overwhelmed, so thank you!

The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. Red Meat And Gut Inflammation: Harvard Study ... https://thehealthsciencesacademy.org/science-catch-up/science-catch-up-28/ Jan 18, 2017 - Red meat and gut inflammation: Harvard study. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

That's exactly the hell… they aren't sure.. so actually I have to say that after the Purdue study years ago, nearly all my Rottie, chow, Dane and other breeder friends got rid of elevated bowls as NO evidence they helped at all and some they might. @Mr: The RAW diet website says to not feed a combination of raw and kibble as the kibble takes so much longer to digest and is likely to cause stomach upset. They do and it's silliness. Not one single shred of research, not one, backs it. Pseudoscience bothers me, especially pseudoscience made up to get you to feel bad about not doing things they way they want you to. Especially ALSO when that nonsense causes people to not TRY raw because they cannot do it all the time and are told it is bad. I fed both most the time for 15 yrs, as do most of my friends. I wish I had the time and money to have done nothing else back then. I cannot do raw now as I have one dog with autoimmune issues and another who, no matter the meat source, every time I try she gets diarrhea. Sigh. So I feed the $60 per 25 pound best dry I can, with lots of home cooked meat, salmon ears and US source/made chicken treats. But I believe in raw in any situation where you can.

Topper loves to eat dirt and he gets a good diet and a vitamin/mineral supplement from the vet. I think he likes the taste!
