Just a suggestion: When you see him "misbehaving" by chewing on 'less than ideal' items, offer him one of his toys and use the word "trade". In other words, 'chew on this instead', and when he accepts the toy - praise him. And when you see him get the toy on his own, praise him again. It could help him understand that certain toys are just for those times when you want to "rip someone's head off*". (*not meant literally, only in doggy world play)

This a very interesting article, Andrea. I'm not a professionla trainer and only have little experience in the field of professional dog trainers here. Those I do know mainly use positive reinforcement but I also know some old school trainers who while professing to now use positive reinforcement do rather confuse the two. I love and totally agree with his statement that 'training is not something we do to our dogs: its something we do with them'. This I think sums up completely the way we need to train our Basenjis for the best results. Toughand Prissy, thank you for posting that excellent video link.

@Flash: I was really impressed by how your dog trusts you and stays even when you disappear behind bushes. Was the training time consuming? I am trying to train my 11 month old pup in the rudiments of sitting, staying and coming at so its good to see what is possible with these intelligent little creatures. Well done! Thank you :) The training is definitly time consuming. We started with sit and Mirtillo wasn't planning on laying down or staying for some time. I just waited untill I noticed that he was 'ready' for the next step. The laying down came when the temprature went up and the staying when it was too hot to move ;) For every new step he gets his favorite treat. For the things he already knows he gets some normal kibble. When I'm behind the bushes I'm still saying 'stay', so he knows I'm there. We are trying to get to 30 seconds without me talking.. But he's still a bit too young for that. And they are for sure intelligent creatures..

@tsjoe007: Dutch PROFICIAT MIRTILLO !! Prachtige foto's. Ik hoop dat mijn kleine vriend het even snel onder de knie krijgt als Mirtillo. Rond de Kerst is het zo ver. Wij tellen de dagen af. Groetjes uit Hoogstraten.:) English Congratulations Mirtillo !! Great pictures. I sure hope our little friend will learn as fast as Mirtillo does. We'll expect our first B ever somewhere around Christmas. We're counting the days. Greetings from Hoogstraten (Belgium):) Dutch: Bedankt! :D Als je maar veeeeeeeeeeeeeel snoepjes geeft.. dan komt het vast goed met het aanleren ;) Heerlijk om zo'n pup in het vooruitzicht te hebben! English: Thanks! :D You just have to give lots and lots of treats.. and than the training will be no problem ;) It's great to look forward to getting a pup!

Not quite, he still needs 5 more points towards his AKC field championship but will have an opportunity at those in March.
