Hi Hoot,
Welcome to the forum. I wanted to introduce myself to you because I too adopted a dog for the same reasons. I wanted a companion for my Golden Retriever who is also my service dog. He had gained a lot of weight during a period where I was sick with my MS. I decided to go to our local shelter and found my baby Taz. He had a great personality and got along well with my Golden "Levi" . I too did not know what kind of dog he was until my BF figured it out. All we knew was that he was hound/terrier mixed. Little did I know he was Basenji or even what a Basenji was. I learned quickly. lol.. He too likes to chew a lot and we have to put everything out of his reach, especially cell phones (from experience) He won't mess with the remote control though. He does like to table surf and will take anything from gloves to mail to cellphones off the tables. He is a very loveable dog though. He loves to be in my lap and is a leaner. You will probably find she is very cat like as it is a trait of basenji's. My Taz likes to lean up against me when i am getting ready in the bathroom or when I am standing around. He is very partial to me though he loves my BF (not sure why) but he doesn't sit with him unless I am out of the room. I have to put baby gates up to keep him from going into the kitchen or from going upstairs to table surf in the bathroom or bedrooms or keep the doors shut. You will find baby gates very helpful. Also you will find that keeping lots and lots of chew toys around will be very helpful to keep her attention off of things she shouldn't chew. We use Nylabones for powerful chewers and they love pigs ears and will take them a while to chew them. Kongs are great as well because they can chew them and not destroy them as they tend to do to other softer plastic toys. I have also found he loves tennis balls and won't destroy them as well. He is fully crate trained but will sleep in the bed with me when my BF is not here. They are very playful as well. Females do tend to try to be more dominant but being a dominant person can offset that problem. Here are some pics of my Taz and you can see they look very much alike. Taz's tail is curled but not nearly as much as a full Basenji. His ears also tip more like a terrier as well. He sheds very little though when I brought him home he was shedding very bad and I don't know if it was stress related to him being at the shelter or if it was just his diet. I feed him purina pro plan sensitve stomach and skin formula which consist of salmon, brewers rice and oatmeal which are very healty for them and keeps their fur shiney and their skin healthy as well as their stomachs. You will find though the longer you have her you will fall in love with Basenjis. I hope you enjoy her and have lots of fun.

New Basenji
-
My name is Chase. Just picked up an 8-month old brindle male this evening. He slept the entire car ride home (1 1/2 hours). Although now that we're home, he's taking some time to calm down, so I let him hang out on the couch and watch some Law & Order while he gets used to the place. He was a bit nervous at first once I brought him inside and wanted to hide in a corner, but now I think he's starting to relax.
Few pictures of him in his current favorite spot.
We had a bit of a scare when he went outside once I parked the car. He got spooked by someone and shifted quickly, causing his collar to come loose (the breeder unfortunately did not notice the looseness of the collar when we left). My quick reactions (prior experience with quick moving dogs) allowed me to catch him right away. But now I fixed the collar where it will not come loose. He didn't try to bolt that quickly anyways. He's extremely calm for being a Basenji. He hasn't made a single noise either.
That's all for now. Just letting Kananga peacefully adapt to his new home.

Congrats… where did you get him?

Congrats… where did you get him?
I located him from a breeder about an hour and a half from here. He was bred to be a show dog but the breeder decided to have two females this time instead of one male and one female. I visited him along with the breeder a few weeks ago. After I did my research and felt it was the right one, I decided to pick him up 2 weeks later. She has been breeding Basenji's for about 13 years now. She was able to answer all of my questions very well.
I'll have my vet double check everything tomorrow night to be 100% sure.

Hopefully he has had or his sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi.. that is one of the important ones…
Again, he is very handsome... congrats and have fun with him.. If you feel like sharing his pedigree, we would love to know if any of ours are related to him....

He is a very handsome boy, congratulations! And a big High Five for catching him, it would have been tragic for him to get away like that.

That was my first question. She said he can only be a carrier.
I'll get some more information about his pedigree later this week. I just wanted be sure to have all the vet records to know what is expected going forward.
I've been lurking around here for the last 2 weeks reading up more and more. Seems like a great place for questions and answers.

What a beautiful boy. Congratulations! And welcome to the forum.
Sounds like you've done your homework - glad to hear your pup's health risks have been addressed.
You are in for a treat  learning to belong to a basenji. Thanks for sharing your ride, and Kananga's photos, with all of us.

Do let us know if you have any issues you need help with.
Lots of good folks on this forum.
He is lovely… -
Thanks everyone.

Yes, he is my first B. I lived with two dogs for about 6-7 years previously. Border Collie and Springer Spaniel.
He's doing ok today. He slept throughout the entire night without making a single noise. He is adapting to his wire crate extremely well. I put a fleece blanket in there for him to sleep on that will keep him warm. I was told he did not develop any chewing/destructive habits and I haven't personally seen anything yet.
He's still being very cautious of everything. I brought him outside to go (which he has been successful with every time), but once I bring him back inside he just wants to hide in a corner. I left some food and water out while I got ready for the morning, which allowed him to be by himself for a good 15 mins. He didn't really even move from his spot. So he is not eating or drinking anything right now. I know it's best to keep them on a schedule. If he doesn't eat in the morning, his next chance will be later this evening.
Any tips on helping him get more comfortable? I know it takes time, but what worries me is that he has 0 interest in water or food. I am using the same food he was fed with the breeder to keep things simple (then moving him over to a food of my choice).

Welcome to the pack (from another Minnesotan)!
I'm sure once he settles in and cues you to how he plans to run the household (:)), you'll all do fine. -
I have a tip sheet we send to folks who get rescue dogs.
Lots of good info.
If you send me your home e-mail, I will send it to you.
I am at brescue@wavecable.com -
He is a very pretty boy. When we first brought Cory home, I was shocked by how little water she drank. Just about drove me nuts because I was used to a lab that consumed a bowl of water each day! Even now, Cory and Jayden don't seem to drink much more water beyond what I put in their food unless they are really running around.
Congratulations on your new family member,

I think you are being very smart to start him on a schedule right away… and he will eat when he is hungry... water for mine is available all the time, but not food. Don't worry about the food.. again, he will not starve himself....

Congratulations on your new family member,
PatAh that is reassuring. I'm used to seeing the water bowl be emptied on a daily basis. Then again, those were bigger dogs and very active.

If you're really worried about his fluid intake, buy a small can of low sodium beef broth, cut it 50/50 with water, and freeze. My dogs love this tasty, but slightly messy treat. I use it in hot weather when I'm worried about fluid intake.
