  • Hopefully he has had or his sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi.. that is one of the important ones…

Again, he is very handsome... congrats and have fun with him.. If you feel like sharing his pedigree, we would love to know if any of ours are related to him....

  • He is a very handsome boy, congratulations! And a big High Five for catching him, it would have been tragic for him to get away like that.

That was my first question. She said he can only be a carrier.

I'll get some more information about his pedigree later this week. I just wanted be sure to have all the vet records to know what is expected going forward.

I've been lurking around here for the last 2 weeks reading up more and more. Seems like a great place for questions and answers. :)

  • What a beautiful boy. Congratulations! And welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you've done your homework - glad to hear your pup's health risks have been addressed.

You are in for a treat  learning to belong to a basenji. Thanks for sharing your ride, and Kananga's photos, with all of us.

  • Awh! He's a looker :)

I'm on the look-out….would really, really love to add a brindle boy to the family....

  • Oh how i loves me some brindle boys! congrats on you're good looking boy.

  • GREAT PICS!! and … welcome to the forum.
BTW what camera are you using ?
We are expecting our little B to be born by the end of the week.
    :D:D Nervous !!:D :D
    Greetings from snowy Belgium

  • Congrats!!!

    How is he doing today?

  • Welcome to the forum! Is this your first B?

  • Do let us know if you have any issues you need help with.
Lots of good folks on this forum.
    He is lovely…

  • Thanks everyone.

    Camera is a Canon A620.

Yes, he is my first B. I lived with two dogs for about 6-7 years previously. Border Collie and Springer Spaniel.

He's doing ok today. He slept throughout the entire night without making a single noise. He is adapting to his wire crate extremely well. I put a fleece blanket in there for him to sleep on that will keep him warm. I was told he did not develop any chewing/destructive habits and I haven't personally seen anything yet.

He's still being very cautious of everything. I brought him outside to go (which he has been successful with every time), but once I bring him back inside he just wants to hide in a corner. I left some food and water out while I got ready for the morning, which allowed him to be by himself for a good 15 mins. He didn't really even move from his spot. So he is not eating or drinking anything right now. I know it's best to keep them on a schedule. If he doesn't eat in the morning, his next chance will be later this evening.

Any tips on helping him get more comfortable? I know it takes time, but what worries me is that he has 0 interest in water or food. I am using the same food he was fed with the breeder to keep things simple (then moving him over to a food of my choice).

  • Welcome to the pack (from another Minnesotan)!
I'm sure once he settles in and cues you to how he plans to run the household (:)), you'll all do fine.

  • I have a tip sheet we send to folks who get rescue dogs.
    Lots of good info.
If you send me your home e-mail, I will send it to you.
    I am at brescue@wavecable.com

  • He is a very pretty boy. When we first brought Cory home, I was shocked by how little water she drank. Just about drove me nuts because I was used to a lab that consumed a bowl of water each day! Even now, Cory and Jayden don't seem to drink much more water beyond what I put in their food unless they are really running around.

Congratulations on your new family member,
    Pat

I think you are being very smart to start him on a schedule right away… and he will eat when he is hungry... water for mine is available all the time, but not food. Don't worry about the food.. again, he will not starve himself....

Ah that is reassuring. I'm used to seeing the water bowl be emptied on a daily basis. Then again, those were bigger dogs and very active.

  • If you're really worried about his fluid intake, buy a small can of low sodium beef broth, cut it 50/50 with water, and freeze. My dogs love this tasty, but slightly messy treat. I use it in hot weather when I'm worried about fluid intake.

  • Little guy checked out well with the vet tonight. Came in @ 18.9lbs. So he has probably an extra pound or so. Not eating today doesn't seem like such a bad thing now.

He did drink some water tonight at least.

  • How old is he? How tall is he? The pictures you posted aren't the best for looking at optimal weight but he didn't seem to be overweight in the pictures. What makes you think that he is overweight?

  • I agree with lvoss…. from the pictures.. I would never think that he was over weight.... average male weight is close to 25lbs

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait

Thanks again for all of your advice. It is nice to know that I am not the only one who is dealing with such a strong willed animal. He is currently laying on the floor chewing on a nylabone as is my golden "Levi". I can't say it often enough "I LOVE NYLABONES!" Well, now he is in my lap chewing his nylabone because Levi thinks that if Taz is chewing on it, it has to be better than the one he has. LOL
