New Coats!!!

Basenji Talk
  • they look great! Nice work!!!

  • Like Mauigirl said, they are over the head style. However, due to the interest, I would like to try some other styles. As long as y'all are willing to be my guinea pigs & buy them cheaply while I'm learning this, I will keep making them for you. I'm going to try to work velcro into it like FidoFleece, so you have a velcro closure all the way down the back (mine ARE NOT loving the other the head thing, but they're also not used to it… yet). I also want to try some other styles, patterns, prints, color combos, etc.

Lvoss, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to make a set for your puppies!!! Maybe start looking around for fleece you would like for girls & boys (or we could do a different color for each pup!). Once they come, I know you'll be busy. So get some ideas & then when they're born we can discuss the details.

If anybody wants to look, Joann.com & Hancockfabrics.com are two great websites for buying fleece. If you find something you like, I will be happy to make a coat out of it for you.

I'll keep making them for $10 plus shipping while I'm working out the kinks, and once I'm out of fabric I should have a better idea of how much fabric & time I need, and I'll work out a price (I'm thinking of $15 or $20 per coat, and I'll donate 10% to BRAT).

If anybody else wants to request a coat, please feel free to e-mail me at carriesquires@gmail.com

Thank you for all of the compliments!!!

  • The coats look great and I love the fabrics you chose! I really like the grey/pink/purple. Those will definately be handy when you guys go coursing Sunday. It is supposed to be rather cold early in the morning.

  • Those all look great!!! Funny side note: my boyfriend was looking at them too & said he loves the camo coat [go figure since he hunts] :p I told him when he learns how to work a sewing machine he can make one for Dallas. Hahaha.

  • if you have a joann's nearby, be sure to sign up for the coupons. i get a coupon for 40% off one item twice a month or so. Also check for end of season deals.

i saw the jacket and loved you work.

I have tons of camo left; I'd be happy to make him one to spare him the trouble of learning to sew. haha!

If you have the time that would be so incredibly kind! I have been looking for a winter coat for Dallas anyway. What kind of measurements do you need? I would obviously give you some money for your trouble & for shipping :) Let me know!

  • Nina, I mentioned the measurements in my longer post above…

  • These coats look great!! Tillo is jealous at Booger!!! He likes the camo as well! :)

E-mail me at carriesquires@gmail.com & I'll e-mail you all of the measurements & pricing info. If I run out of camo, I will gladly run to the store & grab some more as a couple other people are requesting it. You can also pick out your own fleece at joann.com or hancockfabrics.com or other similar websites if you prefer.

  • Right now at joann.com it looks like they are having a really good sale on their Blizzard brand fleece designs. They are all $3.99/yd and there is a really good selection of designs.

    Check them out at, http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3815&start=1

  • Hancock Fabrics is also having a great sale right now on their Glacier Fleece designs. Also, $3.99/yard. Hm…coincidence? lol

  • Wooo-Hoooo!! Carrie rocks. Katie and Tyler will be watching for the mailman!!:D

    Thanks again, Carrie.

  • Just wanted to let you all know Tyler and Kate LOVE their new coats from their newly appointed 'Auntie' Carrie:) I can't wait for my daughter to get home and see these two strut their red carpet wear.

I have the heat turned down a little more and both are snoozing comfortably on the couch through this football Sunday. Neither are moaning or groaning for a blanket to sleep under (they'd be out of luck as the husband commandeered the thick, fuzzy pup blanket because "it's cold in here"; now he too is snoozing peacefully on the couch as I watch football by myself:D )

Peace and tranquility at last. Just what I needed after a week of frantic house/dog deskunking.

Thanks Carrie. The coats are wonderful (perhaps you could expand your line to cover the now cold DH!!:D Perhaps matching foot warmers?)

  • Snorky998– Where are the pics?!

  • Does anyone keep coats on inside? Do you leave them on the pups when you're not there?

  • Rio sometimes wears a coat in the house. She also likes to have a coat on in her crate when it is cool at events. Today she wore a coat most of the day at the races.

Boy, this is a little late…. Hope I got it right.....the first pics of Kate and Ty in their new coats from Carrie

Her face looks Basenji, maybe not the muzzle however. Are they destructive? Can be, don't have to be. I don't like to crate and I never have, beyond the initial puppy stage or with a rescue until I can get a handle on what to expect. I do restrict access to areas of the house that might be vulnerable until I am sure of the dog. Not all can be trusted to have free rein. Be consistent in what you expect or will tolerate, and be very watchful until you understand what behaviour is "normal" for your new dog. Are they really that active? I would say no. She is likely excited to be in a new place and curious about everything. She should settle down. Of course, with a rescue there may well be reasons someone gave up on her, and it's not always immediately apparent if a dog has problems. Hopefully she will fit in well with your family. Invisible fence......likely not a good choice for a Basenji, particularly if there are coyotes in your area. You need to protect her. Coyotes will go after a small dog, and sometimes even a not so small one. I know someone who lost a Jack Russell when he was lured by coyotes and then attacked once he was beyond his master's protection.....and Jack Russells are tough little dogs! However, invisible fence can be useful to back up a physical fence if your dog turns out to be an escape artist. Regarding landscaping.....there are some deer fences that blend well and become almost invisible. Perhaps combined with invisible fence that might be a good option. Otherwise, walks or biking your dog should help, and definitely challenge her mentally. Basenjis are clever and I believe they enjoy learning. I taught my boy to retrieve objects by name.....it was fun for both of us. Good luck with her.

Hollie would simply chew up the plastic bottle to get to the treats. She has done this with EMPTY bottles. That's my B!

Welcome…no breeding info. from me, but I'm certain you'll get lots of feedback and have fun with others who share your passion for Basenjis! I got mine from a NH breeder and we live in VT. Enjoy!

The only thing I would be concerned about with a Dachshund would be the possiblity of it having some back damage with the rough play of a basenji…or even trying to do the same acrobatics that Bs do. I have known some folks who had a lot of problems with disk and spine problems with Doxies...but I don't know if that is typical. Something to think about though...
