How to stop a basenji from begging LOL

Basenji Talk
  • @TuckerVA:

I swear I've never heard a dog pass an 'audible', but Tucker certainly does. Sometimes I wonder if one of my sofa springs has just given out…and then the smell hits me...

    "squeeeeeek".....BAM! choke choke

I've had plenty of dogs stinkin up the joint, but I never heard it till we had a Basenji. They jump up a couple of stairs and you hear this "poof".:D

  • Thanks! Yeah, the traveling was fantastic. Its amazing how much I started to crave "familiar foods" after being gone for so long. After I didn't find the Taco bell, I ended up at KFC ha ha.

  • The only time Ruby ever passes gas (she doesn't get human food, except a tiny bit of peanut butter in her kong) is when she has had shots at the vet. Then the next 4 hours after the shots are DEADLY…silent but deadly . The only dog I've ever actually heard let one fly is my friend's black lab...it farts all the time with plenty of sound .

  • Tucker's sound like a childrens bugle…if you can imagine a sound like that. Like a bugle, but MUCH smaller and higher pitched. He waits until I lie down next to him and then rips one in my face. Clever dog.

I drove 9 hours to Highlands, NC over the holidays. I always knew when he ripped one. He would politely leave the front seat and relocate to the back until the cloud dissipated.

    This thread stinks! :D

  • Tayda will let off some really stinky ones! Lenny really doesn't, or else he's learned to leave the room when he does….

  • Maggii will "fart" and cough… ggg... in her elder years now she has a persistant cough and will have a coughing rage... and fart at the same time... lucky that there is no odor... but you can sure here them....

  • goober farts silently. and in the car. when it's -7. and the car doesn't really have heat. during the conversation with my wife over whether we should have ever gotten dogs.

  • DH made a burger that I picked up for him from this gourmet grocery store near my work (an hour away, use to be our favorite store to shop in when we lived there in an apartment), he spent twenty minutes preparing the grill, his salad, hamburger bun, etc. and with one swoop of a second Zahra who had been sitting nicely beside him on the chair came in through his arm and body and took the top bun, must have dropped the burger on the floor and wasn't smart enough to run with it.

DH put her outside and was fuming mad, I was nice and let her back in but put her upstairs in her kennel with her dinner. DH said she needed to stay in solitary confinement for a while because he was really mad.

She was back in our company within the hour. I think we probably could avoid the problem if we ate at the dining room table but like you said we are lazy! Oh, and the tv is in the living room! :D

  • EL D kicks out the silent but deadly type. I haven't been able to figure out what tips it off though.

  • I recently gave Spence some of that EVO puppy food mixed in with his dry food at the evening meal. Well the result was rather odoriferous. He sleeps with us and I am now not allowed to give him any of it unless he eats well before bed time. I have woken up with his rear end pointed toward my face….kinda scarey.

  • Basil only passes gas when there's company over :D And BOY does it stink!

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
