Name that pup!

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • I have a 3 month old red/white female puppy that I need to name. The prefix will be Sherwood's and the theme of the litter is "Secret". (Mama dog kept her condition a secret until she was about to pop.) The puppy is a feminine dead ringer, conformation-wise and partially markings-wise, for her sire Baron.

Pic of Baron at 8 weeks:

Pic of the daughter at 12 weeks:

OK everyone so which name do you like best for this pretty little girl puppy?

    Sherwood's…....

    Secret Endeavor
    Keeping Secrets
    Secret Reflection
    Secret Echo

or possibly going against the theme.....

    Spittin' Image
    Mirror Effect

    Or something else????

  • Sherwood's Secret Mimic

  • She is beautiful, and I like Sherwood's Keeping Secrets

  • I'll take her!!!!

Oh wait, that's not what this is about… LOL

I like Sherwood's Keeping Secrets also.
Second choice would be Sherwood's Secret Reflection.

I like Secret Endeavor, but that sounds more like a boy to me.

    Have you ever gone with a Robin Hood, ie Sherwood Forest theme? {Or is that just to corny for words?}

  • I like the Sherwood Forest theme too :) How about Sherwood's secret Maid Marion and call the beautiful pup "marion".

  • She is very beautiful and I too, love "Keeping Secrets" and you all are so clever!

  • I like Secret Endeavor.

    Funny you should say that…...

When I was selecting a kennel name to use, I wanted something reasonably short, easy to spell and pronounce, and easy to remember. My name is Robyn and the Basenjis are true hoodlums so Sherwood it was! :p

  • I'm with Jazzy…if you can't find her a home..I'll TAKE HER :D :D she sure is a beauty! And what a spittin image of her papa :)

I like Secret Reflection (Reflection of daddy that is :) ha!)

  • @jys1011:

    I'm with Jazzy…if you can't find her a home..I'll TAKE HER :D

Sorry folks this girl is staying with me but if you are interested in one of her brothers…..... ;)

  • How about this: Sherwood's Mystery Reflection and call her "Mystery" or "Misty" for short. This one covers both the fact that Mom kept her a "secret" and the fact that she looks like Dad (reflection)!;)

  • How about Sherwood's Secret Crush?

Did you say you have boys? :D
J/K, I have to wait until the baby is old enough. :(

  • I like Secret Reflection

  • @YodelDogs:

(Mama dog kept her condition a secret until she was about to pop.)

Just a little curious - but do you mean that you didn't know the Mama was pregnant? Did she have only one pup? Very interesting!

    :)

They are LOVELY puppies…see, Baron and Pippin knew what they were doing :)

  • ok ok ok I can't stand it anymore…what's the winning name!!! The suspense is killing ME slowly :D :D :D

  • Great story…love the bathrobe and the incident at the vet - LOL! they all are beautiful, as you know!

  • Ha Ha Ha I can see Robyn in the bathrobe trying to get the dogs in the door-Ha Ha Ha. If I didn't have so many already I'd take one. But I don't think Shadow would appreciate it. And I am partial to blacks as well!

  • The perfect name popped in my head as I was driving home today. Something I had not even thought of until then.

legacy - something that is handed down or remains from a previous generation or time

This little girl will be formally registered as Sherwood's Secret Legacy!

You guys came up with some GREAT suggestions! Thanks to everyone for joining in the fun. Now….to decide what I'm going to call her. :p

@elbrant On the flip side of this conversation can the breeders or owners recommend or suggest what they think Is a reasonable distance in walking an older basenji. My B turned 14 this past January. She always loved her walks - in her prime we’d do 4-5 miles a day. This past summer I noticed I had to walk her early in the morning or early evening due to the heat. This past fall we were doing about 2-3 miles per day and she was always eager to walk. Once winter hit, it was very sporadic and limited - depended on the weather. It was the first winter that she would refuse to go for a walk if there was snow out it was too cold. Once weather got better, we started walking again but have only been doing about 1 mile per day. There are many days she stops dead outside the door wanting to go back in if it’s too cold (I always dress her w/ a sweater or jacket if it’s cool). She enjoys her walks and doesn’t have any physical restrictions except for her age. Otherwise, I feel she is still spry, active, alert, and maintains a reasonable weight. I forget that she’s old except for the fact that she has a white face.

@YodelDogs: We have already established that Dexter's "breeder" was disreputable. How many litters did this person have? If she had more than one litter then it is entirely possible that the papers that were supplied with Dexter may not have even been from the litter he was in. Very True Robyn

Hi there. I was about to post this question and did a search for this topic. It's been a while now! I am curious how running with a Basenji turned out? We are considering a Basenji and my husband wants it to be a running partner.

Although "NO" became what Shaye most heard, along with " drop it" (she's too quick for "leave it," so "drop it" has replaced that) and "get off the table" and "stop digging the screens" (on the porch), lately we have been firmly saying her name, then squirting her in the face with a squirt bottle. Amazing how well that works - of course the entire house is getting wet but she's getting the picture that when we pick up the squirt bottle and show it to her, she'd best stop whatever it is she's doing. Gemma, of course, responds to "stop" and "leave it." Must be the "other" kind of dog in her….

We once got a puppy with a 12 year old male (and an older female). For the first week the adults kept their distance from the girl pup, but within a couple of weeks my male and the pup were inseparable. She hung from his neck with those wicked teeth and he hardly ever growled at her, she was his little shadow and they adored each other. Adults will make terrible noise and flash fangs at the pups, especially at about 6 months when they are teenagers, but most pups ignore it all! Male dogs are usually very sweet and good with pups…females are, well, bitches.
