I saw another basenji!

Basenji Talk
  • Well for those who have never seen one. I myself was unfamiliar but I can definately see how someone might of a rat terrier when trying to figure out what our dogs are.

  • Shuddering at the top pic…..looks like a very, very wrong basenji ;)

Actually there are lines of Rat Terriers (particularly Decker Rat Terriers) that have Basenji in their make up. So specifically, I would imagine that tri colored one is a Decker.

Ohhhh, how funny-exactly what I thought!

  • striking resemeblence…I'll admit but tail & the faces are dead give aways..NOT basenji lol :D

  • FINALLY!!!! I took Kona to the dog park tonight and he met his first basenji!!!! They played awesome together and Taz's owner was very nice also!!!

This is a picture of a lot of what went on….along with A LOT of running :D

p.s. Kona is doing the dominance showing haha

  • We've met two at the dog park. Neither stayed very long due to not getting along well with others.
My favorite quote was from a little girl, maybe 7 years old, who asked "can I walk your horse - dog? I meant dog." I told her I thought she was a horse-dog too.

  • How cute. The other day a lady told me that my two looked like deers.

  • I love watching Jazzy and Keoki when they run through my garden – which they are NOT supposed to do, but hey! the fence is down -- they leap over the chives and look JUST like deer jumping. Keoki is not as graceful yet, but he's getting there.

  • Every dog in my neighborhood is a pitbull. everyone always thinks minpin, or GSD (he has the coloring like a german shepard). i got him at North Shore in LI. they thought he was a shep/chow mix.

  • I got my Lillie from North Shore Animal League also. When did you get Goober? I got Lillie on Jan. 22, 2007. She is my second dog from North Shore. The first one I adopted in Jan. 1994 was a puppy (lab/border collie mix). Lucy passed away in Oct. 2005. She was the sweetest dog.

    Jodie:)

  • I'm sorry to hear about Lucy. I had to bury my english shepard Missy around the same time. We got Goober on April 25, 2007

This is all too funny!:) When we got Metinga (our 1st B) 5yrs ago, we used to get stopped quite a lot with ppl asking "what kind of dog is she, she's very pretty". One day I had a man at the dog park ask me "is she a Dingo", I said no close relative though. Now a days I have found more ppl recognize the breed here in Calgary. They still ask but more now say "what beautiful Basenjis". As far as other Bs go, I have met a few more ppl w/Bs here in Calgary. Helix and Metinga had there first try at lure coursing a month ago. We met a lady that had 2 female Bs and they live 5min away from us,….who'd a thought! Apparently there are others that attend practice but were not out that day. One Sunday I went to our annual Dog Jog for the Humane Society and this couple came running up to me and said "we saw your 2 Bs and just had to come meet you!" They have a 3yr old, red/white male (who is a lot smaller than Helix). There has actually been quite a few Bs that we have seen and met out at the dog park we go to. One couple we met bought a 4mth old, red/white female from Petland Pet Store. I was both surprised and horrified all at the same time. They told me a local breeder was selling them to Petland! Another couple that we see out there has a little black/white female about 6-7mths old. A few years back before we got Helix, we met a lady out there that had an older female, red/white. Her B- Rosie, has since died. Had also seen a big male brindle, but have never seen him since. All in all though, the number of Bs in Calgary is still quite low- about 6-12 or so. Rhonda- Helix and Metang's mom:)

Please, please post the video…I'm already laughing thinking about it. Oh, and BTW, I can understand why you might want to muzzle your B when playing with your squirrel :D :D!
