Mismarked Basenji's

Basenji Talk

  • Sorry double post…

  • I thought that was Pam and Sheila's pups, I have a black an white boy from them from last years pups.they won't give a price break on their pups, and they shouldn't when you think about it. They all take the same amount of money and care. I love their dogs, my favorite is Reba who was their first breeding of the year… Hard to watch when I want a red and white female and they have a bunch this year.... One of her litters had 9 pups!!!! They must be super busy and ready for the season to be done! You picked a good breeder and I am sure that the white will fill in as she ages so keep that in mind...she will always have a lot of white but probably not as much as right now. Congratulations! The sire to your pup is related to my Oakley so were sort of relatives in a way... Can't wait for pictures!

Thanks for all the input everyone! Again, with the pricing I was just comparing different breeders and their pricings, it is not important to me I was just wondering why some people do what they do. Anyway since I got that squared away… it is nice to know she is not the only, sorta odd looking Basenji, because I was searching for pictures like crazy thinking to myself is she really that different from all the others? I was confused on the whole color issue because most of the breed books I got from the library had descriptions of B's not being able to show if they had too much white and in the wrong areas.. regardless I am not interested in showing right now anyway. In the future who knows.. I may get her a friend. However I would love to learn how to do it. Since I was a kid I loved to read about dogs and showing dogs and agility and service work. I would really like to have my B take part in some sort of activity being in luring or obedience ect... I still have allot of time before that comes but I will start to look into what will work for my family and the dog. I am wayyyy tooo excited about everything!

  • First Basenji's

Also I am really happy with Eldorado they are really nice! But you are def right they are super, super, busy women. I feel bad sometimes I e-mail Pam which seems allot but who knows and I just do not want to be a bother when she has so much going on.. I am glad I have you guys to get my questions answered so I do not have to bombard her soooo much! I LOVE REBA she was soooo sooo sooo sweet! She was such a good mother dog and very friendly and loving. She was bonding with me allot, laying her head on my lap when I came to visit, and I also saw her puppies which were adorable!

  • She's not Odd, different or mismatched… Looks like a perfectly good Basenji! She's not disqualified from showing but it changes the overall look an that can lead judges to not be able to see the overall look as it should be. If you ask Pam she will tell you last year she had smokey and judy which produced a litter with a lot of white but that was considered her most promising show matches. She repeated the breeding this year as the two of them seem to produce such beautiful pups

  • ..and as someone already said, you can't go wrong with an Eldorado puppy.. I think she's a cutie; youre very lucky

  • First Basenji's

Hahha ok I will discontinue saying odd and mismatched because you are right but its good to have some clarity. I will ask her about that though that is very interesting.

  • First Basenji's

    Oh I feel extremely lucky!

  • We all look forward to updates and photos as your new b grows.

  • Congrats on your new baby! I love the name Dolce, it is very pretty. You can still do all of the obedience and agility and everything you want with her. If you do want to show her you will not be able to spay her though. She has some white on her ears that I wonder what will happen to? She is a cutie though, I mean what Basenji puppy is not a cutie?

  • My Nicky has a fairly wide face-stripe that flows into a wide white 'shawl' that ends in a perfect point at her shoulder blades. With a black 'kiss spot' in the middle of her forehead. Way more white than any basenji I had ever had. She was likely "BYB" and is the opposite of good form, but most everyone thinks she is very pretty and comments on "her markings'. Years ago I thought a lot of white was 'bad' but as we see more and more dogs with 'odd' markings, I love them! They are not 'mismarked', they are 'specially marked'!

Congratulations, she is adorable, and wonderful that you two chose each other.

  • If you do ask, it was the "Xtra" themed litter, you can see many of he dogs on the contender page and grand champions page- if you ask to see litter pictures from then and compare them to the dogs you see on those contender pages its amazing…. Pups change so much as they age. But it is so interesting to see that particular litter from 3 weeks old til now.

  • First Basenji's

I have been studying pictures of puppies from their birth to 8 weeks and so on and I can def see that the colors grow and get darker and wider or what not so I am curious to see what happens!

The name took me awhile is has a few meanings.. I heard this phrase in Italian, La dolve vita, meaning the sweet life. Also my brother watched this movie Bruno (not really a great movie) but, the main character kept repeating, "Thats a Dolce" or somthing like that and my bro would just repeat it over and over and over to annoy me but after awhile I got a kick out of it. I was going through different names and it just stuck. Also my brother is going away to Afghanistan in the summer for his first deployment with the national guard so I wanted to do something for him that will always remind me of him when he is away.

  • First Basenji's

Mac Pack, I just went on your page and saw one of your friends that had a pic of their dog Chico and it is exactly what I was looking for just to see an example of the possible future for my dog. OMG he is soo handsome! I'm in love with his uniqueness.

Oh also I do not plan on showing. I am saying that in the future one day I may with another B but I want to take it slow right now.. just enjoy a pet

  • Keep in mind that as a B puppy grows the white does not. It stays the same and so if you see a pup with a thin white strip on its face, it will be gone by the time they are 6 months. Same many times with a large white strip that goes across the head into the white collar, by the time them are 6 to 8 months it will develop a break and fill in with the base coat color.

  • Shelia and Pam are great. I was looking for an older B companion for our 15yro male. His sister passed in early December 2011. We have been blessed with Eldorados Zinfandel, or Dell. I felt that getting him a puppy would drive him crazy. The girls agreed and felt that Dell would be a wonderful fit for our family, and she really has been.
BUT, I should warn you... Basenjis are like potato chips, you just can't take one! I was NOT an animal person, but my husband really needed a connection from a pet. We got our first B 16 years ago. Called the breeder when our pup was about 10 months old to ask if she was producing another litter. We have been a 2 dog home since, and always will be. There is no one word you could use to describe a basenji, and I think that is one of their most appealing traits. Okay, maybe imp might be the word...
You will find this forum a wealth of information. You have every reason to be extremely excited for your new arrival. Your life will never be the same. Basenjis have a way of touching your heart. I just can't imagine life with any other kind of dog. I am sure you will feel the same way too.

  • Watching 2 basenji play and snuggle will bring a smile to your face every time. These are just the best dogs ever.

  • Hi Vickayx, First let me say Dolce looks adorable. Her white face only makes her look distinguishd. As far as I can determine the only thing mentioned in Basenji Standards is that white should not predominate for her overall appearance and from what you have written you really dont seem to be planning on showing anyway. Years ago I bred Rodesians to show but as I got older I decided that what I wanted most was a little snuggle bug and went to rescue B's. spacicfically those who had had a hard life before me. We now have 2 four legged children who are always rooing to show how happy they are. Enjoy your new baby and remember to try and not let her know she is smarted.

Totally agree with Pat. I have two intact female B's. They are NOT the best of friends and have to be watched constantly. They are never alone together. Yes, they've gotten into knock-down drag-out fights. I've been in the ring with slit throats, chewed up ears, scabs, etc. Not a good idea at all. I can control it simply because I watch them constantly and when they start to show signs of aggression, one goes into the crate. But it's not easy, it's stressful on everyone, and I really don't recommend it.

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat

I don't have the flu but I am home from work today because I am going to get a shot in my foot to kill a nerve. I am nervous beyond words and Chase and Zahra have been cuddled up with me all morning which really has helped to keep me calm. I wonder if the podiatrist would mind them coming into the office with me for the shot? :D

I have had several inquiries in regards to our basenji book, so I thought I would compose a few paragraphs about its origin. Sometimes I get carried away when I write, but Rou's book is not so verbose as this posting! When my daughter Sophie was in second grade, she and I created a 36 page, full-color children's book entitled "Rou's Tips for Basenjis". Rou is our red and white companion basenji. Sophie and I were inspired to create a book showcasing many of the delightful aspects of owning a dog, in particular, a basenji. I was a typical girl growing up. I loved all creatures, cute and furry. When I was seven, I had my tonsils removed. I dreamt about the moment my parents would enter the recovery room and present me with my get-well gift: a fawn. It was a real disappointment to receive an Etch-a-Sketch. The need to love a creature cute and furry seized Sophie approximately the same time. Our family never even discussed owning a dog until Sophie bought a complete set of Tintin books for her sixth birthday. Within hours, the girl was enamored of Snowy and pined for her own very clever, small dog. For the next year, we visited animal shelters and dog shows. We discussed the issue end-less-ly. Since several family members have allergies, we narrowed our dog search to include only hypoallergenic breeds. At a Portland dog show, we met an enthusiastic, responsible breeder & her crew of award-winning dogs. We couldn’t even pronounce the word basenji properly. However, we were impressed that the breed is 5000 years old. It was no wonder the basenji had endured: they neither barked nor shed; they were intelligent, personable and clean. Intrigued, we read a stack of great books about the history, the build and the show qualities of the basenji, yet we weren’t able to find much information geared towards children. We continued gaining knowledge about basenjis and their needs; we visited a new litter basenji puppies and fell in love with them. A sweet, beautiful, agile red and white girl was an ideal match for our family’s personalities and lifestyle. In February of 2004, our family was delighted to bring Roussi the Basenji into our lives. It quickly became apparent that the name ‘Roussi’ was a bit too tricky for a young child to annunciate. Sophie’s front teeth were still in the process of growing in. She couldn’t say the ‘s’ sound. The poor kid repeatedly had to tell people “No, her name isn’t Ruthie! It’s Roussi!” It didn’t help that the two words were pronounced virtually identically. It drove Sophie crazy. Ultimately, the name was shortened to Rou. At the tail end of the year, Sophie’s teacher assigned Challenge Projects to her second grade class. Although 'weather' was the theme for the month, her teacher encouraged her students to pursue whatever Terrific Idea inspired them. Sophie and I love art and books. Perhaps a Challenge Project could combine both passions. If Sophie and I were to actually compose a book, I was concerned about the battling temperaments of two independent, strong-willed females. However, I am fortunate that my daughter still wants to spend time with me. How long that will last, I can’t be sure. We agreed to write Rou’s Tips for Basenjis. The To-Do list was a bit daunting. Sophie illustrated the entire story with her wonderful whimsical drawings. I’d say, “I need a bathroom scene!” Clipboard, paper, pencil and click eraser in hand, Sophie would disappear. When she returned with her mini masterpieces, I colored them and cut them out. Placement on the page was a mutual decision. We discovered that working as a team and having to compromise was not always easy. I have never had a tougher art director than Sophie. When you’re seven and a half, you know what you like and what you don’t and you’re not shy about expressing your opinion. Once the drawings had been completed, we took advantage my husband's skills as a professional photographer. Though his specialty for the last fifteen years has been photographing inanimate high-tech objects, he agreed to take all of Rou’s pictures. We spent one Saturday afternoon in the studio with a hefty chunk of cheddar and a happily cooperative dog. Countless hours later, we self-published Rou’s Tips for Basenjis. The book was made entirely in Oregon, printed on recycled paper, with a sewn binding for additional durability. You can visit Rou's website www.roudog.com. For those that can’t get enough of the breed, you can visit Rou at www.dogster.com/dogs/399665 and meet her fabulous Pup Pals. Here are a few lovely comments about our book: "I felt that the interpretation of Rou's thoughts may be the greatest insight ever into the Basenji mind." ~New York "This is a great book that truly gives a true depiction of Basenji personality. A very entertaining book that will make you smile." ~A Registered Therapy Dog "Sure, it might be a children's book (my daughter certainly loved it), but it's also a good primer on basenji behavior for new owners… sort of like "What To Expect With Your New Basenji" ;)" ~The Florida Coordinator of Basenji Rescue & Transport So, if you made it all this way, congratulations! If you have any other questions, we are always delighted to respond. Thanks for your interest! Best wishes, The Rou Crew: -pamela, Sophie & of course, Rou

I wash my dogs teeth every day. On beginning was hard…they do not like this-however I can this make. Care about teeth is very important-I use paste-STOMAGEL and Petosan.
