I did it again!!!

Last night I was coming home from dinner when I spotted a dog on the street by my apartment that looked a lot like a basenji!!! When I stopped the car he ran away!! He was very skinny and scared and almost got hit by a car as he ran. Like i have explained before on this forum, there are hundreds of stray dogs here in Santo Domingo and one becomes.. Not insensitive, but since it is impossible to help them all, one tends to not be concerned too much if they look healthy, and generally comfortable with street life. You can tell when they know how to get around and are doing ok. But this dog was very scared, frightened, had no idea how to deal with traffic, and was literally starving. he looked like a slightly bigger version of a basenji. On closer look, not so much, not as stylized, and loose tail, but markings the same and face very similar. I couldn't help myself and got home, parked the car and went out to look for him. Finally found him and was able to get him to come near me. All the time I'm thinking, what am I doing? I can't take another dog??. Then I was examining him, he was, so scared , but gentle licking my hand, when I noticed his throat was slit, he had a huge open cut on his throat!!!! Poor thing! At that point, I knew there was nothing I could do but take him with me. So I took him home, set him up in Ayos crate in the living room, gave him food and water. I put a blanket over the crate and he fell asleep.
Ayo and Rosita( the poodle mix I found last summer and kept, she is really nice, will post pictures), where both very curious and excited but they sleep in the bedroom with me so there was no fuss.
This morning Intook him to the vet , where they are healing his wound. He is getting all his shots lat and will be fixed. She said that he was probably tied with wire, which caused the wound. How someone can do that is beyond me.!! Some people just should not be…
Anyway, I'm sorry I don't have pictures. Will get some this weekend and I am now trying to get him a home, but it is very hard here, to find people who want "biralatas" or can turners which is how these mix stray dogs are called here. There is an organization here called Dpggie house who help dogs get rehoused. I will try and find out if they can help. Fortunately, the vet is helping me help this dog and not charging me full price for his treatment, and will also help me find him a home.....
Wil post pictures soon. If there weren't so few basenjis here I would bet he has some basenji in him, also he didnt seem to bark. he sounded a lot like AYO!!!!! -
how sad! i have no idea how/why our species can be so cruel. but i sure am glad you got your hands on the little guy

That sounds so horrible about his injury! But how lucky for this pup that he ended up in the hands of such a kind dog lover.
Maybe you can share pix after he is healed a bit. =) And very interesting about the local name for mix strays, biralatas. I'm very curious about these kinds of regional terms and am accumulating a collection of names for street dogs in various locales…
