Hope's at the Vets ER.

  • Update: well the vet finally rung. Her muscles are too tight and they can't push it back into place … they have given her muscle relaxants and are going to try again around 7am... Otherwise surgery.

:( they told me to get some sleep (currently 3am here) but it's so hard.

Just want my lil dog snuggled in bed with me

  • I'm so sorry to hear about Hope and do hope they can manage to get the hip back in place without surgery.

  • Dang, wish you could have gotten her to ortho specialist. The longer out the more damage. Sending hugs and prayers. And a repeat… accidents happen! This is not your fault.

  • Hoping the muscle relaxants do the trick! Keep us posted!

  • I know that's what they keep telling me but they had a go and couldn't n nOw have to wait til the morning for another vet has me concerned we missed our chance… It was the best vet ER (y do things always happen after hrs lol) to go to out of all soyeah :( she should b going for nxt try in around an hour ....

  • Ok they just called me so they done it earlier. Hips back in place! Bandaged up n I can get her around lunch time. She's going to have to be crated (my poor active bubby not going to like that in following weeks) thank god we crate trained her. Will have to take her for drives in the car to ease boredom and some new games n toys I think.

Hopefully the hip stays in place cos if it doesn't then will have to look at surgery to fix it.

Im so glad they got it back in n hopefully her muscles go back to being tight n it holds

Will have to get some boredom buster games from here! (she usually goes everywhere with me!)

Can't wait to see my bubby!

  • I am so relieved to hear that Hope is home and hopefully now on the mend. It's obviously going to be hard for her and for you to keep her quiet especially once she really feels better. I suppose it'll be a slow process but I pray that it'll be successful and the hip will stay in place.

  • That's great news, i am so pleased for you and do hope her hip stays in place.

  • I'm so glad i read this after the hip was back in place. things like this scare the daylights out of me. I hope Miss Hope is on the mend and stays that way.

  • Soooo glad to hear that Hope is now on the mend. I know you will take great care of her.

  • I signed on to check on Hope. Am so glad it went okay!

  • So glad to read all this and know she is OK.

  • First Basenji's

You must have been frantic! I'm glad you were able to get her such immediate care. All the best for Hope!

  • Hi all, my beautiful little poppet is finally home. Shes asleep in bed with me, she's very tired and sore. She cried when she seen me and almost made me cry and she buried herself in my lap. Hopefully this sling will work and now it's just a wait and see game. The vets do have high hopes for her as they done it as soon as they could.

She was a good girl for the nurses and wasn't naughty at all (very proud of this as they stated several times that they were supposed to be standoffish and aloof). They all had a chuckle at her as they tell me that she's been "talking" to her sling.

Glad to have her home. Hopefully the next couple weeks bring us good news

  • I'm so glad to hear that Hope is back home and on the mend. Please keep us updated as she continues to get better.

  • Glad she is home!

  • Any idea how this could have happened?

  • We went back to the vets later that night as the sling slid off and then she proceeded to take the rest of it off. The vets decided to leave it off as she tried to fight it more then it helping and which could put pressure on the hip. She's currently asleep in her crate after eating a pig trotter :)

As for what happened: we are unsure. But we think she fell from the stairs (we live in a highset house) and she may have hit the bracing under the house on the way down. Vets say it's an impact wound (received a stitch) and that's wat caused her hip dislocation. Our steps have outside railing but no inside railing. Alot of highests are like this. We are looking at adding an inside rail now (she has been at this place since 9weeks old and turns 1 on the 30th of May. So it's not like she's never seen stairs lol she's been raised with them)

  • Still, accidents happen in 'routine' settings, so just because it hasn't happened before, doesn't mean it won't happen again. Sounds like a fluke, though. I had a pup once break her foot falling off the bed.

Just glad it was not more serious and that she is mending! Hugs to little Hope.

  • oh yeah for sure. accidents happen. but just letting all know we didnt just leave her somewhere unsupervised and around something high that she didnt know about etc :)

shes not enjoying the crating and gets super excited that she gets the shakes in the morning when she sees us wake up (even though shes practically beside the bed - she usually sleeps in the bed with us). She gulps her food down and does a little burp at the end of it! (this is a new quirk!). shes fine during the day (sleeps) but at night just wants to be with us so she whinges a little then but we dont blame her. She lifted her head up when i was carrying her down the stairs and licked me on the cheek :) she makes my heart melt.

we are going to do the stairs this weekend.

we all slept most of yesterday after not having much sleep the last couple of nights. Coincidentally it was my partners birthday on saturday (she had the accident friday night) so it wasnt a very nice birthday present.

we make sure we're spoiling her with lots of cuddles and kisses.

To each their own opinion Debra, I am working with Oakley on other issues right now and at twenty nine months he is still maturing. I don't live my life by the "what ifs", as of right now I'm able to be with him all the time when I'm not working so yes, I cater to his wanting to be around me, it's not rewarding for me to have a dog that's not independent of me, but it's the reality..and until I'm ready to address it 100% I haven't…he has made significant progress in crating and barrier frustrations...so I'm happy with the progress, and frankly..these other issues needs to be dealt with before addressing this...in order to make me leaving him with others successful. He's a happy, healthy young boy with a complex and stubborn mind, I'm going to work with him and not fight him on evolving and adapting his behaviors. However, your concern is noted and appreciated.

Anytime I have a dog that has a UTI, I add extra water to their food. I also give Cranberry pills. I sometimes give Vitamin C but that is based on the ph level of the urine and the recommendation of the vet. My dogs rarely have crystals but perhaps I catch the UTIs early. It seems like rescues I get from shelters almost always have UTIs. I think they get it from either holding it too long because they do not want to get their kennel dirty or because they eat dry food and drink water separately. Jennifer

My Nika's eye got cloudy to the point of flicking your finger at it got no response then the eye turned blood red. Went to the eye vet and it turns out the lens inside the eye slipped. I had to give her other eye these very expensive eye drops called Xalatan or Travatan that kept the pressure down and the pupil small but even then the lens was moving around a little.

We checked the OFA site, and spoke with Liz who forwarded us to John Kirby. The test may have failed & they might be re-running it. John said he would call us if we needed to retest, so hurry up & wait some more!

Shadow ran his first 3 races on Sunday. He came in as the turtle, but he finished! Oval courses are what he ran about 400 yds each time. The last time around there were about 20 people at the finish line cheering him on. He sure didn't run fast, but he finished.
