Dreamer

  • Welcome to the forum! And congrats on your new girl!

I'm in Maine - live in Gray, work in Portland - and have 4 basenjis (2 - 6year olds, 1- 2year old and 1 - 1year old). Where in Maine are you? Debbie is a great breeder and super person. I've heard her mention Dreamer many times. Congrats on your new addition!

I love your photos, but the one of Dreamer telling your other pup there is zero chance of playing cracked me up. I've seen that exact look from my girl Ruby - when Brando wants to play and well…she doesn't. :D:D

  • What a face in the November picture! She looks like a lot of fun. :)

  • Dreamer looks like a dream basenji girl! Oh, and I too love your avatar.

  • What a little spark plug you have there! I am glad you and Dreamer have found each other! Thank you for sharing your pics.

  • LOL, what a perfectly typical expression from a Basenji… (tell the pup zero chance of playing).... just perfect.

    Welcome to the Forum

  • OMG - she is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

  • She is beautiful with a beautiful name

  • Love the picture looking up from the rug!:)

  • What a lovely girl - you must be thrilled with her.

  • Thanks… I am, even though she has some health problems no one knew about(she's a stoic little thing), I'd still pick her if I had to do it all again.

Biddeford - moved here in august from Old Orchard. I know Dreamer is/was one of her favorites, everyone was surprised when she said I should look at her. She's a very good girl… makes me feel like I went backwards, got the hard dog first and the easy dog second. You have dogs from Eldorado, correct?

Here are a couple more pics... one from the other day and a few from today.

And here is a stack pic of Ezra, my canaan, from today. He'll be 6 months soon, hard to believe…

  • First Basenji's

Cuuuute pics. I love the one where she's in her PJs and the puppies are wrestling at her side.

  • I am not sure HOW I missed this thread before but I laughed so hard at the zero chance my dogs got up!

Both lovely! What health problems does she have?

So basenjis not enough, you got a Canaan? LOL love the primitive breeds huh?

  • Houston

Welcome onboard and might I just say..wonderful pictures of your little Dreamer..she is lovely..and I love Ezra..what a charmer..

  • Absolutely darling!

  • Yeah, I do love primitive breeds - people always say they are harder to train and so on but honestly I find them easier to work with & understand overall. I actually got Ezra instead of another basenji mostly because they are larger, he's hopefully going to be my new service dog and I need something 50+ lbs and preferably 23-24" for bracing work. It was either that or a Malinois, and I think Dreamer might just walk back to Debbie's if I got one of those lol.

Dreamer has back problems that we discovered when she was sick with a mysterious(possibly tick born, but all the tests were neg) bacterial infection she had a few months ago. She has a lot of compression between her last cervical and first thoracic vertebra and in her lumbar area as well, and she has spondylosis. She is such a stoic dog that she did not show how much pain she was in until she had was extremely sick with something unrelated. The vet was astounded when she saw her xrays. I'm sure some of you know how stoic basenjis can be. She is currently only on muscle relaxants and a high dose of salmon oil(n-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation) because she can't tolerate any of the pain relievers we've tried thus far. She also has cataracts starting but they are slow… Otherwise very healthy. I can post her x-rays if anyone is interested but right now I am tired...

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

@elbrant Yes, she's good an patient sometimes, I've been taking pics of her from day 1 so she's used to it, I'm allowed a couple of mins and no more though.

Nice looking dog! I'm tempted to get another too once Safi is a bit older.
