    • RE: Fable

      I do love it when they don't have much white, especially on the face. He was the least marked pup in the litter so he got called "Blankey".

      It was in the 90's here the past two days, so yesterday we went swimming. He had to be convinced to go in the water, as usual, but after that he had fun. He spent almost two hours swimming, chasing waves from boats, and walking around in the shallows.

    • RE: Life Expectancy??

      My first b was PTS just shy of 11 years- she was dx with tonsilar squamous cell carcinoma a year prior. Her dam passed around 15 and her sire I am not sure. But as far as I am aware, all but 2 or 3 of my 1 1/2 yr olds great grand parents are still alive, and a couple of great-great-grand parents are alive too so I hope that points to a long life for him.

      @agilebasenji:

      Oh he's lovely. What's his breeding?

      And tell me more about the not-so-trying basenji in that last pic. Did you make it? it's very cute

      Here's a 6 gen pedigree on my (neglected) blog, along with pics of his sire, dam & granddam. He looks a lot like his dam especially in the face. He acts very much like her too, sweet and goofy. The "not-so-trying" basenji as you put it, is made out of paper clay. I do a lot of sculpture, mostly dogs. I'll have to post some stuff later. If anyone here was at last years national, I split a table and sold several smaller clay 'senjis and donated one to the auction.

      @stash:

      Yay another red boy with no white collar, also love the window seat where he is paying full attention to whoever is behind the camera, did you just call him or did you say rabbit or dinner to get his attention. He is very cute, can I ask what his height and weight is at 18months.

      Jolanda and Kaiser

      I probably asked him if he was cute- he usually perks up and tilts his head if you ask him a question lol. He's ended up a pretty average height for boys around here, 17 1/2", and should weigh around 28-30 lbs but he's skinny atm. His dam is 16", sire is taller then he is- 18" or so(not %100 sure).

    • Fable

      Occurred to me that I've never posted a thread here for him. He'll be 18 months in a few days- seems both like yesterday & a million years ago that he was a baby puppy….

      With his granddam & a sister at 7 weeks or so-

      From the last few months:

      That's Alice(Karnak's Straight to the Moon Alice), bred by Karen Hutchison. I think one of her owners works for Rite Aid?

    • RE: I've been waiting 25+ years for this - they are on the way!

      Welcome! I've met the sire of the litter, Tango, and he is a really wonderful and nice boy . Your pups and my boy are actually cousins- My pup's sire is his half brother(same dam). Good luck and can't wait to see photos when you get them!

    • RE: Dreamer

      Yeah, I do love primitive breeds - people always say they are harder to train and so on but honestly I find them easier to work with & understand overall. I actually got Ezra instead of another basenji mostly because they are larger, he's hopefully going to be my new service dog and I need something 50+ lbs and preferably 23-24" for bracing work. It was either that or a Malinois, and I think Dreamer might just walk back to Debbie's if I got one of those lol.

      Dreamer has back problems that we discovered when she was sick with a mysterious(possibly tick born, but all the tests were neg) bacterial infection she had a few months ago. She has a lot of compression between her last cervical and first thoracic vertebra and in her lumbar area as well, and she has spondylosis. She is such a stoic dog that she did not show how much pain she was in until she had was extremely sick with something unrelated. The vet was astounded when she saw her xrays. I'm sure some of you know how stoic basenjis can be. She is currently only on muscle relaxants and a high dose of salmon oil(n-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation) because she can't tolerate any of the pain relievers we've tried thus far. She also has cataracts starting but they are slow… Otherwise very healthy. I can post her x-rays if anyone is interested but right now I am tired...

    • RE: Training "STYLES"

      Seems like people are using the same terms to apply to different things….
      Negative Punishment - removal of something to decrease a behavior, such as turning your back/ignoring the dog.
      Positive punishment - addition of something to decrease a behavior, such as a leash correction.
      Negative reinforcement - I always have a hard time explaining this one even though I know what it is, so here's the definition from Karen Pryor website: "Removing something the animal will work to avoid to strengthen (increase the frequency of) a behavior. Heeling is traditionally taught through R-. The dog receives a correction when he walks anywhere except in heel position. Walking in heel position increases, because that is the only “safe” place—because the threat of correction is removed by walking there. The key to R- is that an aversive must first be applied or threatened in order for it to be removed." http://www.clickertraining.com/glossary
      Positive reinforcement - addition of something to increase a behavior- treats, toys, praise.

      Positive training usually uses negative punishment and positive reinforcement, though I have heard of trainers who say they only use positive reinforcement but I've never seen any of them in action. I, like many others here am not a CM fan and I'm not a fan of Victoria either, though her techniques aren't dangerous or damaging like CMs. I would much rather people watch her show & try to copy her… I just don't find her all that impressive or think she's a really great trainer.

      (I'm also have puppy fatigue so I'm sorry if something isn't clear.)

    • RE: What do you feed your Basenji?

      Yeah… it sounds like more then it really is, sp is reallly dense and mostly water/fiber. It's about 1/2 a cup cooked I think...

      I always feed mine because my mom is the same - thinks I'm not giving enough though she admits that Dreamer at least is the right weight. Silly puppy on the other hand is hard to keep weight on, the whole litter is the same and so was his sire. At least he's not like his sister who will only eat ground chicken...

    • RE: What do you feed your Basenji?

      Dreamer eats a cooked homemade diet- mainly chicken + sweet potatoes - with some yogurt, a tablespoon or so of pureed raw fruit/veg(brightly coloured stuff - berries, leafy vegs etc) and appropriate supplements. She seems to do best on a simple, highly digestible cooked diet. She gets an egg sometimes when I don't have any chicken cooked. She does ok on kibble, worse on raw.

      My non-b puppy gets 1/2 earthborn holistic costal catch dry and 1/2 home prepared raw… and any dog safe leftovers. Sometimes I feel like all I do is feed him... he eats enough in a day to feed dreamer for at least 5.

      I curious how much other basenjis eat - Dreamer eats about 4 ounces of cooked chicken(dark meat+skin) and 8 oz of baked sp a day + treats coming up to about 400-450 calories/day. She weighs 16-18 lbs and is not very active...

      Edit: Dreamer loves dried cranberries too... and I always get local eggs from the farm store(2/dozen for any size, so I always get the jumbo ones- and they sure are big), so much better then even the free range/etc ones from the grocery store. And if you If you like purple green beans you should try growing Dragons tongue beans - they're yellow with purple stripes, turn yellow when cooked.
