Basenji Training
  • Hello we just got our pup. He is 9 weeks old and was wondering what are the best ways to house train a Basenji pup. We just want to start out the right way with Sancho.

  • It is nice to see you here looking for information.

I would hope that your pup's breeder would have gien you all of this kind of information.
My guess is that your puppy manual [and yes I am serious] did not include anything about house training.
The biggest thing to remember when training them for the house is that they are a DOG, and a puppy at that…. which means that unless you havce no value for anything in your house, you need to crate train him.
You may want to purchase the Basenji Owners Manual through the Evergreen Basenji Club to have something to refer to, in addition to your puppy manual.
    You can find it at:

    Good luck with your pup!

  • I know you know this but outside every little bit and lots of love and time. Welcome and would love to hear more about your pup and pictures. Great being Basenji parents there is lots of fun time ahead. Love his name that's cute.

There is lots of information about house training and crate training… Did you get any information from the breeder? That is really who should have provided you with lots of info.... but if not... you have come to the right place.

Hopefully your pups sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi?

  • Welcome to all of you. So exciting with a new pup..
Look through the puppy threads and also the training threads..lots of info to read..
Where in TX are you, I am in Houston, if you are close, it would be fun to meet up..

Kipawa does this as well, and also prefers to do it with dogs that have a longer coat. I've never had a problem yet, but I do watch carefully. If Kipawa starts going a little overboard, I redirect with a treat, or I will also tell him "time out". Both work for us.

Thanks, I didn't even look at the link in it full pasted format. It was sent to me in an unusual format not just pasted into the message which is why I wasn't sure it would work. Thanks for adding the link on its own. Therese

I'm not sure, in your situation, I would leave the dog outside until he made the decision to come in. It almost sounds as if the dog had bad experiences inside at the previous home and outside was the only place he could stay or maybe was forced to stay; anyway you now have to counteract all that. All the good points have been made by others, now you have to put them all together. Do not let the dog outside without a long lead (long closthesline or whatever); when you say come reel in the lead and treat and praise. You have to be consistent too; use the same word, treat immediately, etc. Also I don't think I would leave the dog loose outside until this is overcome. If possible I would also take the time to be outside with your dog (still on the lead) and play with him and praising and treating for any good interaction he does. Also you might want to have a special treat just for the come command and for entering the house. He does not get this treat until he comes and/or he enters the house - but make it something really special that is not given except for this purpose.

The cold probably made her stiffer than usual, so a small misstep might cause a fall. Glucosamine kept my old girl going for several years, good luck with your oldie.
