• @basi:

It is bringing it up now on the database. Yes you are reading the pedigree right so Benji's parents were full brother/sister. This breeding wouldn't be allowed now by the KC as they have just brought in new rules to stop these matings.
At least he ended up with a loving home for his last years:D

Could have been an "opps" breeding… it happens to the best of breeders once in a while... I would hope that it was not done on purpose... that would lend to a poor temperament, especially if it was not that great of a temperament of the Mom and Dad. Also good reason to spay/neuter because it can happen to anyone. And if you are not diligent when they are season, this is the result.

  • It could well have been as the sire is "at Brimsan" and they probably had the bitch also as she was homebred.

  • In those days dogs were still sold in pet shops although I think it may not be legal now but I can't swear to that.
The dog and bitch were the result of a mating between brother and sister but not from the same litter.
Brimsan was / is a breeder of Rough Collies although I haven't seen any Basenjis from that kennel in a long while so they've probably decided to stick to Collies now!!
It doesn't mean it was an accidental mating although if deliberate it was ill-advised because of the pedigrees in that line. The KC has banned such breedings but only, I believe, because of a knee jerk reaction to 'that' programme.

I don't know of any puppies still for sale but if I hear of any I'll certainly let you know. Successful ex- Basenji owners are always welcome in my books as they have a wealth of previous experience which is always a bonus!

Do you definitely want a new puppy or are you prepared to take on another rescue? I don't think that there are any in at present but if you are interested you could put your name down on their list.

  • Hi Patty,
Benji did have a quick temper but fortunately no health problems for most of his life.
I would like to get a Puppy so that i could get in early with training.

  • I can appreciate that you prefer a puppy. If he/she is 'trained' correctly there is no need for any temperament problems. In my experience, and it was certainly true in the early days when people thought that Basenjis should be as any other dog (and we all know they're not!) they're fine if treated with firmness and resolution and love of course.

I know of many cases of dogs from kennels which were thought to rear Basenjis with bad temperaments where the new puppy owners never had these problems and vice versa. 'Nurture not nature', I feel.

I feel sure that your previous Basenji had been incorrectly treated in the time before you had him.

Looks like your Bing(remember the name from a calender I got year ago from the litter sire's owner) is my Thorn's(Midnight on the oasis with bredand) brother you should also check with Fanconi as Thorn as been DNA tested as affected, even if a 9 and 1/2 still not spilling glucose.
I have near my desk a pic of Bing puppy running with a mouthfull of grass so cute.
I am please I have found some basenji familly on this forum.

  • I know that picture of Bing well - it hangs in pride of place in the hall. I can only guess how you came by it as I would think his breeder would have been the only person we gave a copy to!

Thanks for the info re Fanconi. We will obviously keep that very much in mind.
