• This morning when we woke up, we hugged Buana and we felt a little bump.
We checked him over his whole body and he's okay but only that bump.
You can't see it, it's next to his muscle in his left back leg.

We immediately freaked… just because the dogs are our everything and excpessially Buana (our first) Basenji...

Tomorrow we call the vet and hope we can come the same day to check what it is.
For ourselfes it can be anything, Chafuko playbites him a lot in his hind legs, but also a couple of weeks ago, he jumped over Chafuko's leash when they were chasing eachother, he got a little wound (superficial) so it could be from the healing process. (that little wound was on that same spot)
It could be a little fatbump (that's the most common thing with bumps)
Or its something he need surgery for..
The bump is totally loose and not hard, Buana doesn't have any pain and act totally normal.
Well he acts a bit spoiled now because Mommy had to cry when she freaked... :o

I just cant stop thinking about it because I'm so scared..
It's really stupid, I'm a veterinarian assistent and I saw so much dogs with a bump and so less percentage of that dogs had someting really bad.
But when it's about my own animals.. I freak out and my brains won't work normally for that subject..
My BIGGEST fear in life is to loose my loved one's escpessially my dogs..

Just had to told my story.. I will keep you all updated about my red and white baby...
Pff those dogs, are really know how to steel our hearts..

I am sorry for you to find a lump on your baby. Hopefully it is nothing. Keep us updated.

  • I know jst how worrying it can be to find a lump. Just before Christmas Chance was playing as normal in the living room with Trouper when I squinted at him. His neck looked swollen. I took a closer look and right enough his whole neck from under his ear round under his jaw was completely swollen. I got on the phone straight away to other breeders/friends to ask there advice. (These things always happen at weekends when the vets are shut!) I was told it was probably a problem with his saliva glands. I started doing research etc and this made my panicking worse. On the Monday I managed to get him to the vets. She was pretty bemused too but thought it could be his saliva glands. A course of Antibiotics followed and some rest. After the swelling went down it became apparent that he had a few small scabs under his ear and around his jaw line. Well boy, was I glad to find these. The swelling had been caused by too much rough playing with his brother and was nothing serious after all!!

I do hope the lump on Buana's leg turns out to be nothing serious. We do all worry a lot about our Bs. Please keep us informed. Finger's crossed.

  • Please let us know what the vets says..hugs to you all.

  • You are so right, it is hard not to over-react when it is OUR baby-dog with a problem. Hugs and hoping it is nothing to worry about.

  • Please keep us posted…((hugs)) and fingers and paws crossed for a good outcome!

  • We're home again!!!
Thanks al for your nice reactions! 🙂
At 10.30 hour we had an apointment with our vet..

We came in and the vet take a look and had to laugh a bit.. "You know for yourselfe what this is kim" he said..
A little bit swollen lymphatic gland…..(is that the good english word?)
He feld it right away and let me feel it.. (of course... I thought by myselfe.. owww stupid... how could I missed that)
His temperature and over all body check was totally fine (he checked everything just for sure)

We think it's from the little wound from the leash, or sort of a muscle strain from lure coursing last week.
Someting in the hind leg area, the lymphatic gland was not very swollen so it could be a little reaction at a little wound or sore leg.

It can last about a month untill it's totally dissapeared but it's totally harmless...;)

We were so scared and now sooooo happy he's okay....

  • Phew!! What a relief. I know exactly how you feel. Give him a big hug from me please. 🙂

  • So pleased that Buana is ok, what a relief for you.

    He says thanks I looooove hugs…. 🙂

  • 🙂
    you worry too much 😉
I ofcourse allready had spoken to you, but I was thinking and I thin kmy dogs have these bumps now and then too, I think it can also appear from a musketo bite, when a musketo bites coinsedently in a lymph gland they can get such a reaction too.

Do NOT feel silly, I know exactly what you mean. I, too, was a veterinary assistant at one time. Still, when my Eski dog developed lumps on his tummy I totally freaked out, cried, rushed to the vet at the first available appointment. They turned out to be nothing but lipomas. Those small fatty lumps that many older dogs get that are nothing serious at all.

I knew about these things, but when it is OUR dog, I am all worried over nothing. I could not even watch the day my dog got neutered, just seeing him on the table made me want to burst into tears, and made me all shaky inside.

It's different when they own your heart. All reason goes straight out the window. Glad to hear that Buana is fine!

  • Happy to hear Buana is ok. Nothing wrong with being careful. 🙂

  • I found this old thread when I was searching for help and advise, so I hope Buana doesn't mind me hijacking it!

My 20 week old pup has had a small pea like lump on her muzzle for about 2 or 3 weeks. I have tried not to get too concerned about it as I felt it may have something to do with her teething. This morning I noticed another lump - same feeling etc - on her back leg next to her muscle. The lumps feel quite soft and move around quite freely, they don't feel hard or attached to anything. Both are around the size of a small pea. I have checked the rest of her body and can't find any more bumps. They don't seem to be bothering her and she is not acting any differently.

I assume that these are just swollen glands maybe due to teething or rough playing etc. I plan to monitor them for another few days and then, if necessary, take her to the vet.

Ideas and thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.

  • Lumps around the body can be fatty tumors..but I had a b that had a swelling in his face.
I thougth that he had been stung by a bee, and treated him for that, but it got bigger.
It wasn't good news, after the vet saw him.
IMO, if you have concerns re lumps or issues with medical things for your dog, you need someone other than a person on the computer…you need a vet.
Sorry, if this sounds harsh, but I thougth I knew what was going on in my dogs face, I was very wrong...

  • I totally agree with Sharron, see my email sent yesterday.

  • Belle is booked into vets tomorrow morning. Will keep you posted. Although I think swelling/gland on back leg has gone down as I can no longer feel it.

  • Well, the vet wasn't concerned about the swollen glands in Belle's legs. She said it was usual for puppies as their immune system is developing.

The small lump on her muzzle was more of a mystery but again probably nothing to worry about. The vet thought it could be as a result of an injury (she did have a scrap with our older bitch a few weeks ago) or maybe a small cyst. I've to keep an eye on it and go back in a few weeks if it's still not gone.
