What will your B do?

Basenji Talk
  • We have a cat, so we have a lot of cat toys..

Toys with feathers, with little strings etc..
Those toys always end up on the floor..

Chafuko picks them up and bring them to me, put it in my hand and look at me if he wanted to say.. Helloooo those toys aren't supposed to be on the floor!!!

And we have a little toy on a string hanging on a cabinet, wit feathers and a birdie sound in it when it moves..
The boys won't look at it anymore…

I really think our cat Spaiky is the best teacher ever :D
(when they see a toy for the first time, the same time that spaiky plays with it the first time, Spaiky will make sure they don't want to steal it... they can count on a angry cat :) )

  • Tillo and Lycia would kill the toy…

    We need a cat ;)

  • AJ would probably let the cat have her toy. However, when Chauncey, the ACD, was living with Sumi (my cat) and I, he would seek out her little stuffed toys and lick them until they were masses of cloth and slobber. She would get so disgusted with the mess that she would just let him have the toy thereafter.

Of course, she had her way of getting even: when he'd be lying in his bed minding his own business, she would go out of her way to saunter over and give him a sound whack right on his nose. His response was always a startled look like, "What the heck did I do???"

  • Cody would walk around, acting like he was minding his own business and being such a good boy. Then, just before he passed it, out of nowhere, he would snatch the toy and take it outside for a good shredding/defluffing. He does it every time to Moe. He also does that just before he smacks Moe in the head and runs off.

  • Otis and Moses would kill the toy and try to get to the cat too…the cat of course would kick their butts..

  • Thabo and Zuri LOVE to play with those funny feather-things :D
And always destroy them, of course

    Good, that we don't have a cat…

  • Abbey was almost banned from my son's house after she killed the cat's feather on a stick thingy. We don't have our own cat although she'd like to have one of her own. She loves cats!

The coat looks gorgeous - it's just the skin…I have noticed since it is persisting it down here (and cold - well it is Summer...) that the flaking is much better - I wonder if the flat is too dry for him? It has got central heating...which is till occasionally switched on - and it's nearly June :(

Definitely looks like a basenji to me. If it was something like a lab, they would be in the pool hogging the space.

@Patty: I would think that some Basenjis have a stronger hunting instinct than others. I have had Basenjis innocently free roaming among sheep and others that would immdiately go in to kill. Exactly. When we had only Jazzy, she lived in relative peace with our cats. They weren't friends or friendly, but she didn't chase them much and when she did it was without much enthusiasm. Then we got Keoki and everything changed. I know I've talked about him before – he broke three baby gates in his efforts to get at our cats. We've tried various things to bring them together peacefully -- crating the dog, crating the cats, slow introductions, etc. -- and nothing has been remotely helpful. It's been three years. So, now the cats live upstairs -- which is bigger than the downstairs and where the kids spend the bulk of their afternoons and all night -- and the Basenjis live downstairs. I should add, the cats have never been the problem. They have both lived in peace and friendship -- sleeping together etc -- with our dogs in the past. Neither one had ever been chased by a dog, Until Jazz, whom as I said did okay with them, but they were never friends as they'd always been with our other dogs. And Keoki....forget about it.

A coupple of issues in this thread! (Way to multi-task here people!) Treats: the whole "upset tummy" is definately a too much of a good thing issue. Whatever you decide to treat with, make them very small and just watch how much you give. My dogs go nuts for bologna or plain ham. Cheese is the perenial favorite, but never underestimate the power of a "Good Boy!!" Coats & "Cold" Weather: My boys have it rough. Living in the Midwest, it is not uncomming to spend all witner in the single digits (not counting windchill which often kicks us into the negative teens, if not worse). Both boys have dog coats made by Lands End in the same style (and cold weather specifications) as their Squall jacket series. It consists of an easy belly band and front chest closure meathod. No worries about tails or legs. Easy on, easy off. And my boys live in them during the winter. Dogs, just like people, quickly acclimate to the weather. If we deicde it's "Cold" at 50 degrees, they start to feel that way. If we decide 50 is downright balmy, the dogs learn that too. Walking: Oh, the perenial issue of B's! I agree with many of the posters here: it's all in the tone and your attitude. If you decide to be upbeat and positive and decisive, the B will follow! (But probably will quit at mile 6 if he hasn't had his ice cream yet… grin)
