Mia's Surgery

  • GLad Mia's surgery went well and that Maggie came home!

  • That's exactly how I was when Lola got spayed…. just really nervous & scared. When the vet tech took her she started crying, and I just KNEW she knew I was leaving her to strangers who would hurt her. And I felt the same way about the pain meds. How can I possibly leave my poor baby with strangers to chop her up & operate on her & sew her back up? Then have her wake up confused & scared, and medicated so she can't even escape what's scaring and confusing her. Then let her live in pain for a few more days? Definitely got the pain meds, no question!
But she was perfectly fine & pulled through in no time, and I'll pass along what everybody on here told me: The hardest part is getting her to be still for 10-14 days while she heals!!! She came home that night & jumped straight on the bed & then straight off again (about 3 feet high!) before I could catch her. It was a rough two weeks!

  • I just hate to have to leave my dogs at the vet for surgury, especially after one had a heard and respiratory collapse just before the surgery.

When my 2 girls where spayed I didn't get any pain killer, to prevent them of running too much, the next day they were already playing and running and no pain what so ever.
It is true that the scars were 2 little holes on the sides and not a large one under the bellie, my vet prefer this way not to have any complication after surgery.

  • Glad to hear Mia's surgery went well, bet you can't wait to have her home!!

  • Glad to hear everything worked out okay for all of you.

  • Glad to hear that miss Mia's surgery went well :) Hope you enjoyed the peace & quiet! lol

  • i want to pull my hair out already. i cant keep her from jumping on and off the bed.. its only like a foot and a half off the ground..but still.. she keeps licking herself .. mostly just her lower belly where she got shaved but then she'll gravitate towards the incision.. i filled her kong with some peanut butter and it kept her busy a little but she really wants to play and i cant give her too much peanut butter.. i cant keep her in the crate all day and night.. and she doesnt get her stitches out for 12 days.. uuuugh its gonna be a long 2 weeks

  • Did you get a e-collar for her if she will not leave the incision alone? And there is another thread where I posted a "homemade" e-collar? Also try putting Tea Tree Oil around, near the incision… she will NOT want to lick that...
As far as keeping her confined, honestly.. I never did with any of mine... I didn't use pain meds for spay/neuter... hoping that too much movement, they will figure it out for themselves what they can and can't do.... I have never confined mine by the next day... and if mine wanted to jump... so be it...

  • Basenjis will be Basenjis, I couldn't hold Sahara down either, she jumped too. I just kept watch over the incision and did my best to keep her calm, she did great!

If you want to to keep her busy, try mixing equal parts pumpkin and kibble add, a spoonful or two of wet food and stuff that in a Kong. For an extra challenge you can freeze the Kongs overnight. These take my dogs about an hour to work through.

  • they didnt give me an E collar but it says to call if she keeps licking at it on the paper they gave.. but mostly shes licking around it not directly on it… she has yelped a few times when she jumped down from the bed or couch and so shes started to do it slowly so i guess she's realizing what hurts. hopefully the pain meds will knock her out so she sleeps a lot this morning.

  • when i brought lenny home from being neutered, the pain meds really did a number on him. he was limp as a noodle. it was actually pretty funny, he would be sitting up and then gradually his head would start to bob and his eyes would close, and then once his nose touched the ground, he'd spring back up again all alert and then gradually start to fade again…

good luck to you trying to keep mia from jumping around... not easy with a B!

@Lenora: She had got up from her nap, gone into the bedroom and knocked the ironing board over on her head, all in the space of less than a minute! LOL. Bella almost beaned herself during Christmas. She jumped up on the hearth and tried to pull down one of the stockings. It was held up by a very heavy wrought iron stocking holder. I heard it hit the floor and came into find her with the stocking in her mouth. It must have just missed her by an inch or so. She had gone for 3 weeks with no interest in the stockings. Don't know why they managed to get her attention that particular day. I sure hope she calms down at least a little bit when she's older.

I think I saw Sophie on a b video website and I was so glad that someone else's B made that noise I showed it to my husband and daughter. Thanks for posting that video because as a new B owner we thought we had some kind of devel dog!!! She does it the most to our oldest dog Josie. There are nights she even does it from under our covers in bed when she hears Josie moving out in the living room. Too Funny!!!!
