A beautiful trooper goes to the bridge

It is with great sadness I had to let my black/wht Nika go to the bridge today at 5pm. She was 15-1/2. It was a dreaded day I just hated to think about let alone confront as I have had to do before with my other Basenjis, all of whom I love. She just got too weak so I had to think of her by not being selfish in trying to hang on to her. She tried real hard in her last weeks.
She was a real trooper and we probably logged a few hundred miles hiking together. Today the vet's assistant asked me where I got her and I told her I found her by her puppy picture that was posted on their bulletin board in March 1994 "Basenji puppies for sale $150.
I am lucky to have had Nika for that many years and thanked her today for being a great friend and companion. We all love our Basenjis as each is so unique. We thank you all for sharing and being our friend on this great forum. You can view her pictures in my Nobarkus album.
I love you Nika,
Dan -

Come on now lets take that walk
I know you love them so
I know I need to prove my love
And do my best to let you goI see it there right up ahead
Come with me my dearest friend
I'm going to help you make it there
Make it to the rainbow bridgeI'm taking off your collar now
And hanging up your lead
Because on the other side of that bridge
You will always get to run freeOne last hug and one last lick
I hate to say goodbye
But you couldn’t have been a better friend
Even if you triedI watch you cross over that bridge
I watch you catch your stride
I fight the urge to call you back
And Give my final goodbyeIn memory of all the dogs that make our lives better

So sorry to hear of your loss - it is the kindest act we can do for our loving companions but it is still hard to do. May time bring you peace.

The kindest act that we do for them is the hardest for us. I am sorry for your loss, and hope your wonderful memories of long hikes and sweet snuggles can sustain you while your heart heals. She is running strong at the bridge with new friends now.
