A tired basenji…

Basenji Talk
  • The only thing better than taking your basenji on a fun-filled 5 mile hike is the relaxation you get to experience for the next 12 hours while they sleep it off :D
I love a basenji puppy passed out in my lap.

  • amen Andrew. amen

  • I'll second that…

  • My b/f and I are thinking of road tripping with our basenji from MA to MI for thanksgiving…. I think we are going to have to take him for a LONG walk before we jump in the car to get him all tired out. I also found that books on tape tend to put my B to sleep in the car (however, depending on the narrator it has a similar effect on me).

  • I took EL D camping this summer - not nearly as far away as MA/MI but several hours drive anyway. At first he was nutsy because he thought we were going to the park and when we passed the park he was nutsy because he thought we were going to my brother's place. Then he finally realized we were going someplace new and he simply curled up and went to sleep. Hope it works that way for you.

That is exactly how Zaire is in the car…she tries to guess where we are going and gets herself all keyed up....but once she realizes we are not going to any of the "Usual Haunts" she just curles up and passes out till we get where we are going. :)

  • We are doing a 10 hr drive to Id next week.
The b's sleep and only want out when we stop for gas.
I need to get out and walk the dogs because I get too stiff just sitting.
    Ah, old age!

  • We always start a long trip with about 15 minutes at our near-by dog-park, then get in the car and they settle right down. Mine can easily ride for 4-5 hours between 'pit stops', the humans and the car and the dogs all need to stop at the same time!

    Have a great trip!

    Understand the "15 min" time..gggg….

Mine can go 6 to 10 hours.. if I need them too, when on the road... they know "road" trip... and love them... all comfy in their crates .... either in the Van or the RV

LMAO sharon…..the older I get, the more I realize the B's can often tolerate the long hauls better than this menopausal mom. :D

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
